One of the rear calipers on our old ('90) Mazda 323F GT has begun to weep around the handbrake actuator. This is either a 5p O-ring or a whole new caliper - having had to replace the same caliper on my even older Audi a while back suggests the latter, but I'd welcome any inside knowledge.
It does seem that handbrakes and rear discs don't really mix - the only car I've had so far with rear discs that have behaved was a Citroen GS, whose handbrake operated on the front (inboard) discs, and had a separate mechanism and pads for the handbrake.
If I do have to get another caliper, can anyone suggest a good source? My local Mazda dealer wants £300... Read more

Hello, I have recently taken delivery of a new Grand Scenic 2.0VVT 2.0 (136 bhp) privelege.
Today i was driving along the A34 and the car started to beep at me, all the possible warnings came up on the computer display, "Check Injectors" "Electrical Failure" "ASR and ESP Failure" and "Passenger Airbag Failure" appeared on the dash with the SERVICE warning light. The car had obviously gone into "limp home" mode and wouldnt rev over 3,000, nor would it go over 35mph, i got home and disconected the battery for about half an hour and then reconnected it. I started the car up, and there were no faults showing! I took my son to football this evening, as i got back into the car to go home, the following warnings came up, "ASR and ESP Failure" "Passenger Airbag deactivated" and "Parking Brake failure"!!!!! I suspect a faulty ECU, i know the car is under warranty, but was wondering what the problem may be, and has anybody else experienced this problem before??? thanks

There are far too many trivial questions asked in this thread so a serious one for a change!
When replacing a toilet roll in the holder should the sheets hang down closest to the wall(under) or furthest from the wall(over)? This is not covered in Debrett's New Guide to Etiquette & Modern Manners( I am told!)
SWMBO believes men go for under and ladies over.

Does anyone know what the correct procedure for the following is?
I am a 38 yr old man and had a number of faints last summer and was told that I had a condition called neuro cardiogenic syncope - this is basically one step up from a common faint. I was told not to drive for six weeks (which I adhered to) and have since been given the ok to drive again. I am taking medicine and have had no reoccurance.
Am I under an obligation to disclose this to my Insurance company? I will if I have to because there is no point in paying the premiun only to have them squirm out of paying should anything happen but I also don't want to unnecessarily give them a chance to fleece more money out of me.
What about when I ring around at renewal time?

Thanks everyone for advice. Pretty much as I expected but reassuring nonetheless to have the benefit of some knowledgable people. Interesting that the consensus seems to be that Insurance Cos don't weigh the premiunm for this type of thing - must give them a call today.
What would have made my speedo stop working, all other dials are working fine. The mileometer & trip meter aren't working either. There is no cable, its electronic, so am I looking for a faulty sensor by the wheels or something else. TIA Read more

Today's 'Torygraph' has done it again! An eighth of the front page plus more inside, with JK Rowling telling us that she doesn't want her daughters to grow up looking like stick insects and the picture on the front showing her rather more than head and shoulders and proving to us that she isn't a stick insect - as if we care one way or the other!
This has a very small tank (under one gallon) and no reserve,I intend to carry a sealed 500ml plastic container of petrol whch will give me 8 to 10 miles should I run out.My question is will the petrol go stale in a brimful, ie no air space container?.

I concur with the advice you have been given. The high octane petrol substitute I was thinking about was more expensive than the combination now suggested. However, I would recommend going for one of the original aluminiun bottles introduced for hikers to carry paraffin for their stoves. These were/are called Sigg bottles after the manufacturer and might be a safer bet for petrol storage in terms of sealing and materials than the inevitable cheaper Chinese copies.
Can anyone suggest what would be classed as "good" pads for the front of my Vectra? Are the Dealer's pads as good as any at comparible cost? Read more
I can only say that the stopping power on my car (same as yours) seems below average with the original fit pads. If you find another brand that is any better - then I'd love to know! :)
I'm looking to buy a new car, and have been looking round for the best price. I found it on the internet and am now in the process of phoning dealers to see what they can do. Even before this I phoned around to see what they had in stock and what was available to test drive. So in total I've been in ocntact with around 8 dealerships.
Not one of these has ever phoned me back. I even went for a test drive with one, I lwft saying I'd think about it, and they took my details and that was the last I heard. This was 4 weeks ago. Even today I've been phoning and still nothing!
Are car sales really that good that they don't need to bother with a private buyer or am I just unlucky? Should I just buy through a broker instead and not bother going to a dealer anymore, after all if they can't phone me back why should I spend my money with them? Read more
>>Perhaps they recruit the wrong people and do not train them
In a market where we insist that we scrape every penny out of their profit, where we insist we will not pay one penny for good service, where woudl they get the money from to train people or pay them huge sums of money to get the good ones ?
Everybody says that customer service in this country is rubbish, which it is. What everybody fails to realise is that in other countries people are prepared to pay for service. Not here.
In other countries people won't deal with someone that offers bad service. Not here. We just whinge about it.
And its all about supply and demand - we are offered the cars, service, discount and experience we will pay for. If individuals are not happy with that, then blame the masses who are.
Which of you, when selling a car, would offer a discount of £1,000 if you knew that the next minute would be 10 people along willign to give you your asking price ?
So why would you expect anyone else to do differently ?
Its a different matter if its a BMW Ci and you're prepared to offer just about any discount you can to get shot of it. 8-)
We get the car salesman, the service and the deals we deserve.

Its Renault you will learn to accept these minor problems at least mine reached 60K before it went into self destruct mode,it now appears it comes as standard equipment.
