Even More Honest John!!! - Chris7
Big advert in todays Telegraph's Business section. "Even more Honest John from next Saturday in Motoring, extra advice and your exclusive guide to what's new in the showrooms each week". Alright for some.
Regards Chris.

I'd rather have more Honest John than more rubbish about £1000 handbags, cellulite and how to cook asparagus!

Something tempts me to hazard a guess that Armitage Shanks has the misfortune of being a man ...
Even More Honest John!!! - Happy Blue!
>>> in a breathless tone akin to David Attenborough....So we finally witness the person for whom the new DT was designed for..

BECAUSE IT WASN'T FOR MEN!!!!!

I mean, why do they prepubescent models wearing clothes that my slim and attractive wife would not consider wearing in a month of Sundays?
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Even More Honest John!!! - Nsar
For once Espada I think you may be missing the point...

Anyway, do they still have that scary looking woman with the big hair who models clothes with her teenage daughters? Wrong, wrong, wrong!

Ilike James May's column though.
Even More Honest John!!! - Armitage Shanks {p}
The only reasons I still buy the Telegraph are because of Matt (the greatest cartoonist working today IMHO), the fact that I get it with vouchers and at a discount and James May. Like moving my bank account, which took 35 years, I lack the energy to do anything about it!

NSAR, I too hate that woman and her daughters; Sarah Standing, in case you want to stick pins in a doll! A few weeks ago there was an article about J K Rowling and she was pictured on about 1/5th of the whole front page, lying on her back in a rather low cut blue dress and with her busty substances very much in evidence! (Thanks to Dud and Pete for that excellent phrase!) IF I wanted that sort of thing I know where to go in the newsagents and it isn't where they sell the broadsheet newspapers!

I well remember an article James May wrote some years ago describing a trip he took to Iceland to test a new model Range Rover. He said that he was met by the local rep who was "wearing a Puffa jacket stuffed with albatrosses". Terrific stuff but not really worth 65p a day if you are a hetero male, and proud of it!
Even More Honest John!!! - Armitage Shanks {p}
PS I buy the DT for Honest John as well as Matt and May and the vouchers!

The problem with the DT on a Saturday is the same as most weekend papers, there is just to much of it. I read the main section and Motoring, often Travel and Your Money (or whatever it is called) and sometimes Weekend oh and the TV Guide has long since replaced the RT in our household. However I could do without the colour sup altogether (though the recent article on stadia was interesting) and often feel guilty about how much is put out for recycling totally unread.
Even More Honest John!!! - Ian (Cape Town)
Unfortunately I have to rely on the electronic version of the Telegraph.
Oh, one thing I miss about 'the old country' is the quality and quantity of newspapers... here you have a Hobsons choice.
But HJ's agony column is compulsive (electronic) reading, and is always printed out and given to the subbing staff as an example of "THAT's how to write headlines!"

Even More Honest John!!! - boxsterboy
I only buy the Telegraph on Saturday, and only because of the Motoring section. Could do with less Bikes in it though.

James May is brilliant - much as I like HJs column, I hope we're not going to get more of it at James' expense.

Must disagree about Matt being the greatest cartoonist - surely that award must go to Mac from the Daily Mail. I change my daily newspaper nearly every day, depending on what I get free with it (Independent is good for that... mmm, chocolate) and what the front page looks like. Fall back onto the Times if all else fails.

Gotta love being a student and getting papers for 20p. :)
Even More Honest John!!! - adverse camber
Real cartoonists ?

Steve Bell (If... in the Grauniad) & G B Trudeau (Doonesbury)

Motoring link ? Errr.... Errr... No hang on, I'll think of one in a minute...
Even More Honest John!!! - Altea Ego
I get the Times/Sunday Times.

Its rubbish for motoring. Even the sunday times "Motoring" section is rubbish. It gets read in the time it takes to eat two slices of toast and lime marmalade.

There was free chocolate with the Independent? When was that?

Less bikes, could do with more bikes if anything.

Started buying the Terrorflag back in old Bill Deedes's day as editor. Being more or less overtly racist in those days (the paper, not its editor or most of the hacks) it had exceptionally good Africa coverage, of professional interest to me in those days. I read it alongside Le Monde every day, and simply got into the habit. I have always scrutinised all news media with a measure of scepticism though. One shouldn't be too quick to believe things.

I agree that Matt is wonderful. So is Nicholas Garland quite often (did anyone spot his recent effort on Tony Blair as Dorian Grey?). But all newspapers are thinner, not necessarily physically, than they used to be. Sometimes I wonder why I still buy the damn things . At least I don't read the Sunday comics.
Even More Honest John!!! - Deskpilot
I have the Telegraph Monday to Saturday but in regard to the Saturday edition, my view is that you should be able to opt and pay for just the supplements you want. At least 50% of the rubbish included goes straight into my recycling bin!!!

I rather hope that if Honest John's column is being extended that more emphasis is included on technical data and not just Freda and Gladys enquiring about the car they should buy next since their current model is reaching extinction!!!
Even More Honest John!!! - Chris7
Who writes those awful one liners at the start of each question in HJ's Saturday column.
Regards Chris7
Even More Honest John!!! - Ian (Cape Town)
I recall HJ said somewhere that it was the Telegraph sub-editorss who came up with the headlines - and that they were all crossword fundis as well.
One of the joys of journalism (as a sub) is being able to put little 'in' jokes into the headlines and picture captions.
(And sometimes at 3am at the end of an 18 hr shift you get some WEIRD inspirations!)
I recall on edition of a football magazine where most of the headlines were lines from Monty Python!
(Including the amazing cover line relating to a player who had returned to SA after many years abroad and joined a local club: "I'm 37 ... I'm not old!")

"you should be able to opt and pay for just the supplements you want. At least 50% of the rubbish"

When I lived back in the UK I used to weigh the whole newspaper, then weigh the editorial that I read, the editorial I didn?t read, adverts, inserts etc. and log them down and work out the ratios between them. Took up a large chunk of my weekend, cutting ads out and wotnot. I can?t remember off the top of my head but it was more like five percent that I actually properly read. I?ve probably still got the logs somewhere.
Even More Honest John!!! - Lud
Obsessive compulsive disorder BBD.

Apart from the actual newspaper, what I read on Saturday is the Telegraph's Arts and Books section ('Tarts and Crooks') and of course the Motoring including our leader in no-nonsense, occasionally irascible mode.
Even More Honest John!!! - Big Bad Dave
Yeah fortunately I rarely see English papers now and never with supplements but there are plenty of other things that have to be weighed.

It costs £1 / kg to move to Poland. I had to leave my porn stash in Walthamstow.

I only hope it?s in good hands.

Oh dear - looks like I shall have to start buying a Saturday paper again (I have enough trouble getting through the Sunday one!).

WRT cartoonists, I think it depends on whether you most appreciate the penmanship or the joke. Matt is consistently the funniest/pithiest pocket cartoonist (IMHO) but I love the drawings of Steve Bell, Gerald Scarfe and Trog. Wish I could draw...
Even More Honest John!!! - Armitage Shanks {p}
JBJ, thank for your comments re Matt. I will back down from my suggestion the he is the best cartoonist but he is certainly the best 'pocket cartoonist'. He can make me laugh out loud when I see his cartoons and he has such a quirky take on current events. Recently, when Tessa Jowell had said that her husband had never told her about a gift of £340,000, Matt's cartoon the next day had a newsman by his stand with a flyer saying "David Mills - My wife never told me she was in the Cabinet". Way beyond apt and very funny IMHO.
Even More Honest John!!! - AlastairM
Matt, for saying it all in a 2x1" box has the rest beaten, even my 9 year old gets it so it must hit the targets square on.

Oh and more on bikes, it is a motoring section not a car section.
Even More Honest John!!! - Xileno {P}
"Even More Honest John!!!"

Unfortunately Even Less Honest John. Was looking at Used Car Buyer and not only has it gone to bi-monthly but HJ has disappeared...

A sad day, I suspect the next step will be for the magazine to close altogether.

"Was looking at Used Car Buyer and not only has it gone to bi-monthly but HJ has disappeared...

A sad day, I suspect the next step will be for the magazine to close altogether."

There was never much hope for it with a title like that - it manages to be both unglamorous and ambiguous (which of them is used - car, buyer or both?). 'Car Bargain Hunter' or something similarly positive would have been more attractive.

There should be no lack of market. I don't know how many owners an average car has between showroom and scrapheap - about 8 perhaps? If so, there are seven times as many used-car-buyers (my hyphens!) as new-car-buyers.
Even More Honest John!!! - Ian (Cape Town)
Oh and more on bikes, it is a motoring section not
a car section.

Four wheels good, two wheels bad?

I wish MORE motor-car drivers had had training on two wheels - makes them much more aware of the hazards of blind spots, slick road markings, lane changes etc...
Even More Honest John!!! - AlastairW
As well as more HJ, Mr May's column is moving to the back page - in colour! Presumably it will mostly be brown.
Even More Honest John!!! - Armitage Shanks {p}
Today's 'Torygraph' has done it again! An eighth of the front page plus more inside, with JK Rowling telling us that she doesn't want her daughters to grow up looking like stick insects and the picture on the front showing her rather more than head and shoulders and proving to us that she isn't a stick insect - as if we care one way or the other!
