Bought a golf mark 3 VR6 last night, with full VWSH and 91k in 11 years. It's in good nick & cost £1700. Unfortunatly on first cold start this morning it started OK for a second and got up to idle then died, requiring a second start. Noticed that that the main temperature gauge on the dash only works intermittently. Any ideas?

Simplest and cheapest things first:
* Have you given it a good Italian tune-up, getting the engine fully warmed up and pushing it to high revs in as many gears as are legal (that's 3rd, 4th and 5th out of the game then)?
* Then comes my familiar refrain: try the VAG injector cleaner just in case it helps. It will only do good and if it makes no difference then at least you'll know the fuel injectors are clean (part no. G 001 700 03).
* Then perhaps you ought to get the electrics looked at if the gauges are unreliable, but if the problem has gone away you can postpone any expense if you prefer.
Others more expert than I am may well have better suggestions.
I haven't experienced this problem with my December 1996 VR6 Highline.
