OK so think now have decided that car will be new Octavia 1.6FSI Ambiente Tiptronic Estate with a couple of options one of which will be front fog lamps. (if anyone has any suggestions for this choice, or thinks that it is not good, say now!)

Only query is the colour. Quite keen on highland green (see skoda website) but have heard rumours that a green car will hurt resale values. Think the blue that they are offering is perhaps not quite dark enough for taste and that would leave us with greys/silvers which would be ok I guess but are a bit boring.

Any suggestions? What would be the safest colour to go for? Read more

>>not the hideous Mk2 Focus>>

I also much prefer the original Focus but, in fairness, the new model does deliver the impression of purpose and solidity when viewed side on.

Unfortunately from other angles.......:-)

I've just had a quote from swiftcover.com for the C5 (£189 for full comp, protected NCD, £100 voluntary excess) which seems to be quite good value. I see, however, that they work totally online - even your actual policy seems to be downloaded as a PDF file. It would also appear that making a claim would follow the same pattern.

Have any backroomers used them (especially for a claim!) and if so, how have they found the service?

Cheers! My renewal quote from Tescos is £215 and I thought that wasn't bad.

That's an interesting point about tax renewal though - presumeably the Post Office were happy enough with a printed off certificate?

Thanks for the feedback.

Hey. Im back with more space shortages problems.

My dad just got a a 2002 Daewoo Nubira SE 1.6L. I am going to be driving it every now and again but due to my freakishly long length I will definatly need to extend the driving seat runners so I can fit in comfortably.

Can anybody link me to a website (and ideally, to the exact thing i want). Also, could someone please tell me what if anyhyting this mod would do to my insurance (bearing in mind im 18 and passed my driving test less than a month ago. Im named on the car.)

Thanks Read more

Hello,

Just caught up with your question!

In the past I've just taken the drivers seat out, bolted angle iron to the existing seat mounting points, and then bolted the seat to the angle iron further back than the original position.

A couple of things to be careful of:
if someone else will be driving the car, measure carefully. It's easy to put the seat too far back for the other person to reach the pedals or gear lever.
Modern cars have electrical connections underneath the seats. Make sure that these have enough travel to do what I've suggested. Or that they unplug and can be extended.

Good luck.

hi ive a motability car (cmax)...weve had nothing but trouble with it since december 2004.. its been ok for the past 4 months just after its 1st service..now it makes a nasty grinding noise from the back brakes when put into reverse! window wiper keeps catching the screen and makes a funny sound..driver window wont go up or down when we want it to.weve developed a vibration when it goes to 1500 rpm..or go above 60...mph.i dont know what to do now as i dont want to sound like a moaner when i tell ford its now got these probs...i really cant trust the car..as i keep having a "power steering failure" come up on the computer..and other warnings...but ive had this problem before and it took them(ford) 4 weeks to do diagnostic checks to tell me that a meter had gone wrong...i dont know whether to get a second opinion?? Question Copper Grease
93eng

My brakes squeak and I bought some copper grease (Texaco make) in a large 500g pot. Now the pot did not come with any instructions on how to apply the grease.
Is it a case of applying the copper grease to the brake discs? Now something tells me that I should not be applying grease to the friction surface????
Anyone knows where to apply the grease?
Thanks Read more

Yes some of these replies made me laugh. These are OEM
brake pads on a Merc E320 CDI 3 years old and
12,000 miles. Now I know that the SBC brakes are a
pig to deal with and I dont quite fancy removing them.
So I guess I just have to live with the squeal.

There's quite a lot you can do without dismantling anything.
Clean up the rust from all round the caliper, and try and poke inside at the bits where it is very close to the disk. Spin the disk while holding a knife blade or screwdriver at the sections on the edge of where the pads rub. There could just be a rust lip that needs scraping off. Try and do a bit of similar poking at the back, and use a hoover with a bit of tube as a nozzle.
I don't know the particular design, but if you can easily see the edge of the pads where they slot in, it might be possible to lever them in a bit and check that the pistons aren't stuck. At least you could blow/suck out any dust that might have built up.

Of course if you can push the pistons in a bit you might be able to apply some of your Euromountain of copper grease between the pistons and the pad using a thin knife blade.

i have a 89 golf gti 16v, it wants to kangeroo first thing from a cold start..otherwise it runs sweet after a few mins and starts on the button

ive got a reasonble understanding of k jet..please dont chime in unless your SURE , as ive already had some bump steers :(

things ive checked ..

new injectors and o rings
fuel system pressure ok at 76psi
warm wur pressure ok at 49 psi
airbox flap height ok
5th inj sprays when cranking
new vac hoses, no other obvious air leaks

ive also used a air/fuel monitor and the readings check out at hot idle, cruise and when pulling hard

now , i need to ask few things

does idle mixture ajustment affect the mixture above idle

how does the airbox flap height affect things

any ideas what c/o or a/f ratio should be upon start up?

any sensible ideas on what it is and how to confirm it

tested the 5th inj, sprays nicley while cranking, shuts of nice with no dribbles .also sprays when blipping the thrrotle for the first 3-4 mins

ive also tried another wur...cold pressure is somewhat differant

does changing the warm wur pressure also change the cold pressue by the same amount or are they seperate to one another?

It seems that quite a lot of fleet type vehicles are registered in Bristol perhaps because, a/ because they come off the boat in Portbury and are prepared locally before onward shipment to the user and/or b/ because there are a few vehicle prep companies in the Portbury area that fit out UK built and well as foriegn vans etc for the likes of BT.

The pipe from the Windscreen wash fluid tank pump has decided to disconnect itself. Now when I pull the lever for a squirt of water onto the windscreen, I get a vertical jet in my engine bay. Looking at the location of this washer fluid pump.

I am wondering how to get to the broken connection.

When I find it, would it be best to secure it with a cable tie or something. If it's happened once now, I'm sure it'll happen again.

Common Mark 2 Mondeo problem, had it myself.

Access is by removing the radiator undershield, three bolts. You might have to slacken off the bolts holding the reservoir in position, but I managed to get the pump out without doing this.

Pump pulls out from bottom of reservoir, might be an idea to drain it first unless you want your arm soaked in screenwash fluid!

While you're down there it might be worth pulling out the rubber filter that the pump pushes into and giving it a good wash under a tap to prevent future problems occurring.

Use cable ties to keep plastic pipes from coming off pump, replace pump, and refill reservoir. Tighten bolts if loosened and replace radiator undershield.

That's it!
