Does anyone drive, or have access to, a Fiat Uno 60, Mk2 car with 1108FIRE type engine (blue covers) on a carb, 1989 to 1992 please?
I have a simple question which you may be able to help me with.
Thank you. Pete. petel@clara.co.uk

I used to have one of those 60S 1991 - The carb gave me so many problems. I couldn't even get the right repair kit from three different Fiat dealers!

I even got asked to identify the carb that I had on my car after I supplied the dealer my VIN number and engine number!!

If I were you, I would take it to a Weber specialist for a rebuild or replacement. Every garage I went to told me to go to carb specialist.

i have just had some burk write off my k,reg pug 205.
i have heard that where it is not your fault you should be
compensated so that you will be back on the road in a car
similar in price and condition to the write off. with that in mind should i accept the £650 the isurance company has offerd

Whose insurance? Yours or the "burks"?

The advice given by others above is sound.
This is what I would do: I would personally not bother my own insurance except to keep them fully informed. Use a solicitor, or the no-fault accident claim services offered by AA, RAC, and even some manufacturers. (Pug may have their own scheme.) It is then responsibility of the "burk" to put you in the situation you were in before the accident. Send your claims to him, unless/until his Insurers step in and accept full responsibility. How he does that is for him to worry about.

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.

It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.

No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread
Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm )

Any of the above will be deleted. If the thread becomes difficult to maintain it will simply be removed.

However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.

This is Volume 21. Previous Volumes will not be deleted. Volume 20 can be found here: ( www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=17192 )

Hiya...

www.prospects.ac.uk and www.hobsons.co.uk have directories of places that offer placements, lots are science based.

If it's definitely forensics she's after then the site DVD suggested is probably best, or she could try approaching individual police forces or similar directly.
Good luck!

Folks,

Twelve months of uneventful life with a '97 Citroen XM have elapsed. What a wonderful machine!

I resent having to pay £250.00++ for a renewed warranty, which means I would need to have my oil changed by the local indie.

But I do fear something very expensive going bang or just ("silence") on my '97 2.5. Steering ram? ECU? HP pump?

But, there again, the definitions of "mechanical failure" made by Warranty Holdings are restricted to things actually breaking. Snapping, falling in half. So they may weasel out of any potential claim.

So, to renew or not renew?

Thoughts, anyone?

On balance, my dear sir, I would say it should be worth extending even at that mileage. But £250 sounds steepo.

Haven't XMs for all their silkiness got wierdo brakes and suspenders to? The most important thing (even if bleedin' obvious) is PERLEEZ read the small print about exclusions/ maximum values VERY CAREFULLY before you buy. Good luck anyway!

The garage I used to work in was owned by a bloke in his late 60's, and when he heard all about this computerisation malarkey it was the straw that broke the camels back and he decided to sell it all to a property developer. It was a petrol station aswell so it was an even bigger loss to the community

How do you clean stains off cloth seats ?

My New Beetle has got some that look kind of like water marks, which I think came from liquids spilt by small people ! They aren't coloured, though - kind of look like the seats permanantly wet (but isn't).

Any ideas anyone - VW useless when I asked them, and unsure about using household fabric cleaners .... ! Read more

Don't waste your money. Get a tin of Decosol 'Instant Valet'. It is excellent. I'm certain that it will work a treat although you may have to put some plastic over your seats when you sit down until they dry.

Can anyone give some advice on the following.

The Yaris seems to get the best reviews for small Automatic car, but at near £10K for the 3 dr 1.3 T Spirit, this is very steep.

The new Nissan Micra 3dr 1.2S auto seems to have all the kit and can be purchased for £7660.

Air con and alloys don't really bother me.

Is the Micra a good car in general and is the new auto any good? they have done away with the CVT box, which needed costly repairs after 40-50K? For a normal 4 speed unit.

Can a Micra be recommended. I actually like the look of the car, has good kit, is cheap to fuel and insure.

Any pitfalls?

But Air will make the car much easier to sell on....

Hi everyone,

I'm now the proud owner of a Jap import Prelude Type-S (the 220bhp monster jobby).

For a six year old car that's done 75000 miles it's in absolutely gorgeous condition, and the engine is amazingly sweet. (Revs out to 8000rpm without missing a beat.)

It's been well looked after and the guy who's had it for the last two years has changed the oil every six months himself (using top quality fully synth oil), he's put new plugs in (the platinum tipped ones), and generally kept a close eye on it.

However, there must be a few things that it'd be worth doing on a car that's done this mileage.

I'm assuming the timing belt/cam belt is one thing that should be addressed as a matter of urgency, seems silly to risk losing the engine over a rubber band.

Anything else I should be looking to do, or can I afford to just deal with things as they arise? Read more

Musing to myself driving home last night (as one does) I got to thinking about what checks are made on us as drivers.
During the last week I recon that my speed has been checked on around sixty occasions by static cameras, on at least two occasions by mobile cameras and I have been stopped at a routine road block to check my tax disc.

During the same period nobody has checked to see whether I have a driving licence, whether I have insurance, whether I have an MOT and my vehicle is road-worthy, whether my eyesight meets the minimum standard, whether I am intoxicated, whether I am under the influence of drugs, whether I am taking prescription or over the counter medication which is impairing my performance, or indeed whether I am carrying a knife or gun.

Why do I get the impression that the only checks carried out are those which raise revenue and that the ones which would actually improve safety but would cost money to administer are ignored? Read more

>>This followed by a quick eye test.......

Cardew I am thinking you are TIC there. Of course I don't expect the Police to do everything on the spot like that. But, if resources were sufficient, I see no problem at all with random stops, if it were to make any progess whatsoever against the increasingly lawless society that I find myself in nowadays.

Maybe I'm not 'getting real' as you put it, and I'm sure that at the moment our police forces do not have the resources to do everything that you mention.

I am, however, reassured by the comments below of our police officers past and present, who do seem to think that this new AN-something machine is a good idea. If we really have something that can detect whether we are carrying a gun or not, or if we are taxed or not, then this is surely a small but great step forward.

As for searching bus and train passengers - well, in an ideal world yes. I know it ain't gonna happen, but in the present climate it's a real pity that it cannot happen.

Hi all,

It's soon my birthday and was thinking of getting some lessons in a skid car.

Does anyone know who I should contact for this?

I am in Staffordshire.

Thanks in advance Read more

When i was a 'new' driver my county council ran a course including a go in a special skid-pan mounted car, on an airfield, with a class 1 police driver as teacher. I found it very interesting and eyeopening at the time. This was a free course aimed at drivers with under 1 year's experience, but im sure they ran something similar for other drivers.

This was in Hertfordshire, perhaps Staffordshire run a similar scheme?
