craig the car

I have a 98\' Astra. Where the milage counter is a warning comes up for a couple of seconds when a service is required when the car is turned on. I\'ve had the service done but they didn\'t reset it for me. It\'s not a major problem just one of those annoying things. Any ideas how to reset this till the next service is due?? Read more

Is it possible to do a similar thing on a Citroen Xsara - mine was serviced a few weeks ago but the service indicator says that it has only 5000 miles to go before the next service.

Thanks!

Hello all

I need to transport my Renault Megane to from Surrey to whence it came in Bonny Edinburgh.

If its up to it I`m going to get a relative to drive it, but I`m not sure that it will make it (its not been well recently)

With this in mind I would like it to go on the back of .....something.

I understand that you can no longer send cars as freight on trains so I presume my only option is on the road. The cost of this worries me. Does anyone have any ideas how much this is likely to cost? any good/cheaper companies that do this service? or any other ways of getting a car up there?

Thanks Read more

It could be easier to sell one in Surrey and buy one around Edinburgh?

I have a '94 1.8 GL that has a seized up rear wash/wipe. Had the car for around 4 years and it's been fine until the last couple of months.

Like I say, it won't move at all. And I'm sure, before it started playing up, the washer was moving with the arm?

Anyone else experienced similar?

My Golf mk3 '94 1.8 Driver had the "squirty" end snapped off and the black cover was missing when I purchased it, had to drill out the remaining plastic stub and attach a new one (a couple of quid). The "squirty" bit now moves with the wiper but I don't think it is meant to due to it now squirting pedestrians when the wiper is at its max travel. Mind you better than directly squirting behind!

To partially dismantle the system, take the cover off around the "squirter", get a pair of plyers and carefully pull the squirter out, remove the plastic panel inside the boot and you should be able to pull the other end of the tube out.

If I am incorrect someone please correct me! Sorry my problem was not identical but may hopefully be of some use.

I have a MkII golf driver - 1991. It recently lost the wheel arch cover on the front passenger side revealing a fair amount of corrosion.

This extends right down to the plastic valance fixing which has been rotted out.

Ok, its not a structural problem but i want to get it sorted.

Do I rebuild the wing with fibreglass putty & zinc mesh - which I have never attempted before, or do I find a new wing and get it fitted at a garage?

The former would take a long time, so I would like to replace the wing, but my funds are shall we say - low.

How do I go about it?

Do I go to a wreckers yard?

Where can I find a suitable yard?

Will they be able to get the part off a car for me?

Can I just hand the wing in to a body specialist and they fit it?

What else do I need e.g. new arch moulding?

How much will parts + labour cost?

Any replies will be gratefully received. Read more

From memory the wing is bolted on as opposed to welded, I would try to source a good wing in the same colour from a scrapper and get it fitted. Even a similar colour wing is going to look better than anything you are going to attempt with filler. Also much less labour involved in bolting a wing on than all the prep, filling, sanding, painting of the old.

Good luck

Need to change the plugs and air filter in New Beetle 1.6 engine (same one as in Golf and A3 - 105BHP).

Is there any benefit to getting higher performance sparks - better performance or economy, or do they just last longer - or just cost more ?!

Ditto high performance air filters - any use spending more on them ? Read more

Thanks for the advice - will let you know if the car goes any better !

Found a good website - www.spark-plugs.co.uk/ , who also promptly answered 2 e-mails I sent them - prices seem pretty good, too !

I, too, have had incredible difficulty in having a sub re-funded. I've been chasing this up for months and just getting the run-around. However, at the time I renewed I did so by credit card, and since the publisher ( a most appropriately named one ) kept my money but didn't send the mag, the credit card co will re-fund me if the publisher doesn't cough up by this week. Thanks for the suggestion, have just done so.

escort man

Hi,

Yesterday (Sunday) during a shooping spree in Lakeside, a very kind member of society decided to try and steal my car, (a 1992 J Reg Ford Escort LX) by way of drilling and generally ruining the passenger side lock/key hole.

I noticed this when i got home and the car would not lock - the central locking would engage then unlock straight after. For those familiar with the central locking system it was as if trying to lock the car with one door open. After accusing the girlfriend f not closing her door properly i noticed the mess that is the key hole - a big hole, and the barrel has been bent upwards - as if its been drilled then something jammed in it and levered to bend it upwards.

Im counting my blessings that the car was still there for me to find, and that nothing was nicked from within. I can only assume they/he was disturbed as the radio face off was still in the glove box.

This does however leave me with a problem as the car doesnt lock properly - as mentioned above, turning the key to lock it only prompts it to unlock itself again.
However, after numerous door slamming/blue air moments i managed to get it to remain locked, however going round all the doors to make sure they were locked, when pulling on the passenger door handle the door opened and the central locking disengaged. The alarm/immobiliser remained on though (i realised this when the damn thing went off) - and would only turn off when turning the key in the drivers door. Im assuming this could be a reason why they didnt take the car.

Obviously this is not an ideal situation, and im goig to the garage when i get home from work to (hopefully)get it fixed but id like some advice of anyway i can sort this problem out short term until i can fix it propperly.

Cheers

Remove the passenger door trim and carefully pull back the plastic membrane (try not to tear it as this is a splash guard) Look at the lock mechanism to see if it's not aligned properly, ie, left partially in the locked / unlocked position as if the key was still in the lock.

Hi all,
I recently purchased an N reg Ford Fiesta Ghia but in the (new back then) Mark 4 shape. The car has had a new engine put in which is a 1.25 Zetec-S engine. All in all, the car runs perfectly but there are a few niggling things. Occasionally, when started, the revs will drop to almost stalling point and sometimes the engine will stop. This didn\'t really bother me because pressing the accelerator stoped this. However, recently, on the drive out of my estate (not a mansion estate!) every time I\'ve stopped, the engine has stopped. It doesn\'t always do this and admittedly, after about 5 minutes, NEVER does it leading me to believe it could be temperature related. Also, the car has started to hold high revs even on \'idle\' so instead of idling at 1000 revs, it does it at 2. Again, this is occasional and I\'m not too bothered about that because my Dad\'s Focus did exactly the same thing and then stopped. ANy ideas?

Hi elie. I never updated this thread because I only found the problem a few months ago and forgot all about it.

Mine later caught fire! What it turned out to be was the catalytic converter had broken up inside and got blocked. This accounted for the low power, stalling and the eventual fire. May be worth checking out.

Welcome to the BackRoom by the way.

Since it seems people are incapable of discussing such an emotive subject, I\'ve deleted the thread.

The only thing I will add, given that the question was originally asked, is that where you have an accident which you consider not your fault, and not involving another motor vehicle, then you will frequently find that people with house insurance will be insured for liability at some level.

Don\'t restart the thread.
