The APNR vans in my area, W London, LHR, A3, M25 J9 /J10 are now displaying a sign on the verge explaining what the vans are doing. I saw another example yesterday but did not stop to read it properly.
I think this PR approach will ease the concern of many passing such vans as most motorist, I suspect, think they are speed cameras. Read more

Here's a better idea. How about everyone who wants to share this information sets up a profile and adds {p} after their screen name to show that they have done so?

Anyone know the source of the survey on used cars breaking down in their first year (on the right of site.)
Looking for the methodology used and if there are any further details about best and worst cars for breaking down soon after they have been bought?

My wifes Pug 405 TD Est has developed the following :
Stragne repetitive clicking sound (like somethings trying to rotate and won't catch properly) followed by failure of fan. It was a bit of a weak blast to begin with but now it's packed up altogether. The clicking seemed to be eminating from a housing (looks a bit like a cylindrical air filter housing behind the glove box. I could feel the clicking by putting my hand on the top of this cannister through the small gap passed the glove box.
Please can someone tell me :
What's the problem, how to fix it, what parts I need and how to get access to the problem or how to get the glove box out to gain accesss.
Many thanks

Let me get this right; The noise stops when the re-circulation button is activated so I'm not sure I understand why it's having difficulty opening the air vents when their already open. Also, howq do you get to the thing inside as I can't take the glove box out ? and what do I do when I get to the housing behind the glove box from where the irritating noise is comming from ?
Any hel would be appreciated...thanks

I've just bought a Vauxhall Astra (Expression) 1.4 litre hatchback H reg.
It has 120,000 miles on the clock.
The engine runs really well.
However... the automatic choke does not work.
When starting the car I need to keep my foot on the accellerator until the engine warms up to stop the engine from cutting out.
Has anyone experienced similar problems with the CHOKE not working on Vauxhall's Astra range?
Also... any ideas on how to get the choke working again on this type of car?

Hi Dave
Cheers! I'll have a tinker and re-post when I've tested the one in the Astra itself.

Hounslow. Near Hounslow Central tube or 40p for 4 hours in the multi storey carpark 50 feet away from the store.
3 leg worked well when I used it at the W/E.
I have no connection with Wheelhouse but have bought many tools there in the past years with no problems.
They have a selection of tools of a general nature. These two I think maybe of special interest to oil changers living locally. Read more
Henry, I endorse what you say. My office is close to Wheelhouse so I visit often. Great for tools of all types at amazingly low prices. Not just tools, but all manner of stuff you never knew you wanted.

I have am 18 month old BMW318 with the latest petrol engine. Despite never using for short journeys I get mayonaisse on the dipstick and in 25000 miles have had to add over a litre of coolant. To me this indicates a head gasket failure? The dealer (who seem thorough and competent) have found no leak despite pressure testing and checking the heater circuit and \"asking BMW if they had any instances like this\". All to no avail. They have also said that the mayonaisse is not unusual in this engine - something I find hard to believe. Anybody care to comment on possible causes of this slow loss and whether the gasket (if thats the problem) is likely to fail suddenly and do I just have to wait until it gets gradually worse and gives more evidence?

I think DL is right nothing to worry about. There isn`t an engine that don`t burn oil and evaporate water around so from what has been said no prob`s
Can anyone help? - Drove my Rover 214Sli 91 H reg 100K miles and there was no heat from the heater. Checked the temp gauge and it was off the top of the scale! Thinking that it was about to seize I had to drive 1/4 mile to a safe lay-by so I popped the bonnet and immediatly the the heater started pumping hot air and the guauge dropped back to normal! So I got home ok, most of the water was gone, but there is no sign of any water loss. Left it for an hour, refilled the water and run it up to temp. Still cannot find any water leaks, drips or weeps anywhere - everything is tight and dry. However, the exhaust seems 'steamy' so is it the head gasket even though there is 'mayonaise' in the oil filler? It's on its second head gasket as the first one went at 55K about 4 years ago. Car runs perfectly. If it is the head gasket whats it going to cost I'm in the New Forest Read more

Probably is Ivor, but at those prices they're still £1200 - £1600 more than you can buy them for elsewhere in the UK (OK, they're 2 yr warranty imports).
I seem to recall drivethedeal.com ALWAYS has them at aroundf the prices quoted anyway...
I was stopped several times last year because the cherished transfer plate had been on my mums car, which had been stolen the previous year (on the day of her funeral - thieving scum), and for some reason the DVLA database wouldn't update to indicate it had been recovered.
Each time the officer asked if the car had ever been reported as stolen, and I explained the circumstances. Odd thing is the officers concerned accepted my story without verifying it, which seems to me to partly defeat the purpose of ANPR. I could have been telling a lie afterall. Unless the officer already knew this before pulling me.
