Or does it?

BP's promotional material for Ultimate unleaded claims a large increase in acceleration.

"it's like upgrading from a 1.8 to a 2.0 litre engine" - their words not mine.

Since it's illegal under the Trades Description Act and Advertising Standards to make mis-leading claims, this must be true!

The vortex device is mentioned in an article on the Eureka website: www.eurekamagazine.co.uk - you need to register though. Do a search for 'fluid power' in the Reference Library.

The company responsible for this device is NVF Noteka in Russia.

Mrs PU is still pursuing the Motorcycle bug. She wanted a helemet. Whilst we were up in Cheshire this weekend we visited J&S Motorcycles at Northwich. Superb Customer Service. Young chap approached her as she gazed at the Shoei display. He then spent a good twenty minutes until they found what would suit. Nothing was too much trouble, including searching for the "right" colour through dozens of boxes. Excellent. Read more

I have a suspicion that people who work in motorcycle dealers (however shiny) tend to be enthusiasts

Sadly this is not usually the case ;( You are lucky, the ratings from the undercover magazine surveys have a few shining lights, but a lot of dross - complete with iffy servicing. If you do find a good one, stick with them.

Surely one reason that old autos fetch high prices is that many of them have been granny's cars and only have tiny mileages? Doesn't mean they have been looked after properly of course.

Blackpool:

Best: Yeadon Way, built on the old railway embankment (no, it should never have shut), gets the tourists off the motorway and into the car parks without them cluttering our roads up...shame about the ones who think it's a dual carriageway.

Walking to work.

Worst: Speed cameras everywhere. Limits dropped to 30 everywhere just so they can put signs up saying 'Blackpool is 30 or less'.

Motorhomes on the Fleetwood road. This road has the only 60mph stretches within miles of my house, and there's always somebody in a motorhome doing 25.

Same road - streetlit, so some drivers think it's automatically a 30 limit.

People assuming that a speed camera always = 30mph (thanks to those 30 or less signs).

The illuminations. Why do people have to drive through? They should all park on the outskirts, and be bussed through for a small fee. Or walk. Heaven forbid.

Railway station in the wrong place and necessity of changing at Preston from a nice comfy train to some two-car heap. And we expect political parties to want their conferences here (we had the Tories this year, but only because everywhere else was booked up).

And lots more. By the way, if anyone reading this is a regular visitor to Blackpool - we love you really! (But don't drive at 30 in a 60 limit).

Can anyone please advise if there is, who and where, a UK main agent/importer for NKG plugs in the UK?
Thank you. Pete. Read more

I used to like the Jam, the Clash, Stranglers etc. Now I have a Honda Accord and every time I see the new Avensis I think - I would really like one of those.

People won't agree I know., but for me the Toyota badge has more kudos than a Merc or Beemer. When I see the German marques, I think nice car but what a waste of money.

When I see the Avensis I think great car, great value, I want one.

I have had a test drive in the Avensis Tourer and Mazda 6. The Mazda was good to drive and the steering was excellent but it seemed a lot noisier inside than the Avensis. I was pretty impressed with the Avensis, the ride was good, it was quieter than the Mazda, although I don't think it'll be as fun to drive. My taller partner felt she had more room in the Avensis both in the driving seat and at the back. There is also a touch more boot space. I do a lot of motorway driving and currently, if I have my partner with me, she'll be sitting in the back looking after our toddler so this swings me in favour of the Avensis.

I think both cars look good, the Avensis looks a bit like a Passat. The Mazda salesman that I dealt with was much more knowledgeable and interested in selling me the car. He was also more prepared to give me a good trade in price for my car and cut a deal on the list price. The Toyota salesmen didn't seem to want to talk discounts until I bought hard evidence.

The Avensis works out more expensive but you can get good discounts on the list price and if you put down enough cash interest free credit.

Hi All,

Ok, I appreciate this is something of a tenuous motoring link, so apologies to the mods in advance, but I\'m looking to see if any BRers have had trouble cancelling a subscription to a certain motoring magazine.

I\'m not going to name the magazine, so as not to land the site in any hot water, -- Sorry, nothing that may identify the publication -- ND

They have given me the run-around for the last few months, and have now settled on the argument that they changed publishers, and along with it, their refund policy (i.e. now subscriptions are non-refundable).
My view it that is wrong to try and apply this new policy to existing subscribers.

I am simply looking to recoup the balance of my subscription.

If anyone is experiencing / has experienced similar difficulties, please email me (the address should be in my profile)

I understand that the moderators may find that post is not generally acceptable motoring discussion material, and if this is the case, could I ask that the post is left up read only for a short while? I think this is possibly the best place on the \'net to find ex-readers in a similar situation

Thanks in advance
-David. Read more

Legally, it\'s difficult to say without looking at the terms on which you subscribed.

Basically, there\'s no implied term in the contract that the magazine will remain anything other than a magazine devoted to cars, and although the fitness for purpose and reasonable quality provisions of the Sale of Goods Act do apply, as long as the magazine contains actual journalism (however widely defined) and some content you might reasonably expect from its name.

However, if your contract specifically says that you are entitled to cancel after x months, then you still are legally entitled to that cancellation. Even if the benefit of the contract has been transferred to a third party to the orginial contract, the new publisher, the burden (any rights you have, mainly the right to receive the magazine) will also transfer.

However, a \'policy\' - i.e., a preference by the original publisher for refunding money rather than continuing the subscription, rather than a contractual right in your favour, won\'t count, any more than the new publisher is obliged to print the same articles as before.

As for the mods of this site regarding naming and shaming - the issue is not whether or not it\'s true but whether or not they risk being sued as a publisher of anything defamatory. Just because they might legally be in the right doesn\'t mean that they want to have to go to the trouble of proving it.

Bingo! Thanks DavidHM. ND

Hi

Have been having lots of fun with my L reg Corsa 1.4. A week or so ago I noticed that the temp gauge was very high & looked in the radiator to see there was no water in it. I was going away onholiday so I thought I'd leave it until I got back to sort it out.

When I got back I filled the radiator up with water & tried to start the car. I turned the key and got absolutely no response - didn't even try to fire up. The radio wouldn't work & when I tried the central locking it only lifted the drivers side catch.

Left it a couple more days & my husband tried to jump start it. Agian we got in to the car by manually opening the drivers side. Once connected the car started fine - first time. Took it for a drive and got back. Tried to restart car and again dead as a dodo. Husband manually locked car but now we can't manually unlock it. Basically think car is conspiring against us!!

I am getting a new car soon & want to PX this one - so don't want to spend too much getting it fixed. Does anyone have a clue what might be up with it - and is it expesive!?

Thanks

Yep, Simon is probably correct. If the original battery, then it will have a small window on top that indicates the condition of the battery by the colour of the indicator.

Green = Good.
If has turned darker, eventually to black, then it requires charging.
If clear/yellow, then the electrolyte level in the battery is too low to allow further use, and should be renewed. Do Not attempt to charge, load or jump start when the indicator shows clear/yellow.

Oh, and as regards to the door lock, try a squirt of WD-40.

Looking at a parked 03 Focus this morning noticed that the Auto lever gate only showed P R N D 2 1 ,does this mean it only has four speeds ?.Could not find the answer in car by car breakdown so over to the forum please. Read more

To those who say the Ford has a button to give
an overdrive as 4th gear this still seems to make it
a 3speed auto as 4th has to be manually selected
ndbw

>>
Let me try again. The Focus autobox has 4 gears.
Select D and it will go 1,2,3,4 automatically just like any other 4 speed autobox I have driven.
If you are cruising in 4th and press said button it will switch 4th gear off and give you 3rd gear. If you carry on cruising in this situation and press said button again it will change up automatically into 4th.
They choose to sign it O/D and that is what appears on the dash display.

I have driven several thousand miles in Corollas and Camrys with the same type of gearbox. It is a simple system that works well.

It lacks the ability to go 1,2,3,4 just using the selector on the floor. It does not prevent the driver using this sequence but the button has to be used in conjuction with the selector.

It is so so simple, precise and safe to drop from 4th to 3th without fiddling with the selector and no kickdown action is required. You just rest your hand on the selector and press the little button under the head.

"The Offence you would get reported for if you were caught using one of these would probably Obstructing a Constable in the execution of his/her duty."

This maybe a daft question but are the mobile camera vans operated by police officers or civilian staff? Or am I getting confused with the folk who load the static speed cameras with the film?
