I recently bought SWMBO a 96 A4 Avant. There are 2 problems that she has with it one being that there are no electric rear windows and the other is that there is no remote central locking (which is a pain as we have to carry our disabled kid to the car and it would be a lot easier to open up without fumbling the key into the lock etc).

The rear windows will be expensive and she will just have to live with that, but the remote CL should be easy enough as the car already has CL.

Is there any cheap way of doing this while still using the standard alarm (this is the one that briefly beeps at you when locking the doors)? Is there any make better than the other? On her old car I had installed a Clifford. The problem with this was that if you did not start the engine within 30secs of opening up then the immobiliser cut in (not really a problem just a little annoying). Read more

Thanks to the help of IanW, I bought a remote central locking kit. I was looking to install it but before I ripped the car to pieces to locate the central locking pump, I though I might ask the BR if they know precisely where it is located.

The car is a 1997 A4 Avant (manufactured in 1996) and the instruction book with the kit said that it was located in the boot under the carpet (passengers side). Is this correct? As from what I have seen under the carpet is some insulation.

Any help would be welcome

What is procedure for removing/replacing the fuel filter on these vehicles?
Do i need to clamp any of the fuel supply or return lines before removing the filter element.
The GM manual states that pulling fuel thru the system is a complex procedure and doesn`t go into any descriptive detail.
Might be handy to know this procedure.
Their doesn`t appear to be a handpump on the filter case as in sdome other manufactuers vehicles. Read more

Question 306 Headlamp
hm

Is it possible to just replace the headlamp lense on a 306DT (1995).

I have notice that they are ready available to buy (mine is cracked).

Are they glued or something? Read more

mph_turbo

I have a 96 306DT and it has 'clip in' headlamp lenses. One word of warning is to hold onto the old clips as the new clips are extremely hard to fit.

Brilliant story from the local papers:
'A' and 'B' travel to a canoe race, driving their landrover. Having nobody to drive their LR from start to finish, they ask if somebody would be prepared to do it for them - this is a common occurence, apparently. Volunteer 'C' steps up, and says OK.
Unfortunately the good samaritan 'C' prangs said Landy.
A and B sue him for the R6000 (about 600 quid) excess...
Now, race organiser 'D' writes a letter to fellow canoeists, saying:
"if you are so disorganised that you come to a major race without a driver, you cannot expect to have Sarel van der Merwe waiting in the queue to drive your car."
If someone is kind enough to offer to drive for you, you need to accept that you have placed yourself at risk of something going wrong."
"So, if in future you arrive at a race without a driver, and you find it impossible to get a stranger to help out, thank the w*nker from Western Province who has stuffed it up for all the rest of us."
"In my opinion, the disservice to the paddling community comes in trying to get someone to pay for the privilege of doing a favour."

A and B are now suing 'D' claiming R20 000 [2000 quid] each in damages for the "w*nker" reference, and another R20 000 in damages each for implying that they were dishonest in trying to get 'C' to pay for the damaged car!

A little late replying to this thread...

I bought my 307sw from new-car-discount.com in May 2003 and had no problems.

I saved 17%

I've now driven 18500 miles in the 307sw and had no faults with the car at all :-)

This, the Gold version polish, sells in my local store for the equiv of £8.67 for about 300 ml vs good old-fashioned Turtle Wax which runs £2.47 equiv for the same amount. Both are US imported.
The former claims to be the duck's guts but it's only wax after all and very expensive. I'm wondering whether I should treat my new car to it and if so what benefits can I expect, or just stick with the tried and true.

Somebody must know.

Thank you squire, I shall invest in a bottle of Meguiars and some new polishing cloths and get Growlette to don her spaghetti top and cut off denims to do the needful, while I provide advice and and counselling over a cold cleansing ale or 6 from a relaxed position.

Rainy season over now, pleasant 25 C evenings.

Certainly I'll report my view when done.

Does anyone have one. Found one, but then the breakers yard sent it to scotland by mistake and can\'t get it back, so another is required. Don\'t really want to buy a new one since it would be more than the car\'s worth. The old pump\'s bearings have gone and is generally knackered, diesel pump guy over here on the isle of man thinks that it is beyond repair so basically can anyone help, i\'ve sent requests off to the used spares parts that come off google, if anyone has another other ideas I would be greatful.
Thanks
David
PS its my dads car and hes just has a new starter fitted so doesnt want to chuck it, also the car is ideal since galvanised and we live next to the sea. Read more

I am interested in a Toyota Avensis 1.8 VVTi Tourer in metallic silver. The best price from DriveTheDeal is 15341.99 and UKCarBroker is 15270.00 both including metallic paint. I have been to a dealer with these prices and have managed to get a quote of 15346.12 on the car with metallic paint, 0% finance on 6846.12 and the balance being made up of trade-in (5750) and cash (2750).

It looks a good deal. My problem is that I am trading a BMW 318iSE saloon in metallic silver with 78000 miles on the clock and according to the Parkers personal quotation (price 1.99) it is worth 7160 in average trade-in condition, Glasses Guide, via the AA, values it at 6646 in average trade-in condition but the dealer wants to offer 5750 (which I have already negotiated up from the measly 5250 he started at). I have already had a trade-in price of 6300 from another dealer even before sorting out the price of the new vehicle. I have relayed this to the dealer and ideally I would like 6500 but he is not prepared to play ball (as yet).

How much more does anyone else think I can squeeze him for on the trade-in and does anyone have any good bargaining tactics to deal with this? I have already left him hanging as I want to test drive another car first and have spoken to the dealer offering the 6300 trade in giving him details of the 0% finance offer to see if he can better it.

And this whole thread show's why dealers have to make their money elsewhere, ie servicing and parts. Why not buy from the internet supplier in the first place if it is the cheapest price and sell the trade in privately ? I suspect I know the answer.

Can I pose a question that I don't know the answer to? If a broken down car is on hard shoulder and AA/RAC van behind it, traffic flows by. If a police car is behind it, traffic slows down to have a look, causing potential accident.

If accident happens on motorway and cars go to hard shoulder, police will appear, want driver details etc, if accident happens on the high street, as long as no one injured police will not want to know!

What is the best way to deal with vehicles on hard shoulder? I know if my wife broke down on a motorway I would be happier if the police were there till AA came along. Would it make a difference if police had flashing orange lights on their car same as breakdown companies? Would that then give the policeman less protection than his red/blue lights?

Suppose what I am trying to say is what is the best way to deal with immobilised vehicles on the hard shoulder with minimum impact on the flow of traffic? Obvious answer is for all drivers to drive properly and ignore the immobilised vehicle?

Think I'm confusing myself, I'll go for a lie down in the hope that you lot know what I am trying to say!! Read more

PhilW

Slightly off topic but why do breakdown trucks always leave their orange flashers on when loaded up and driving down the motorway? (Often at 80 in the outside lane!)Do they have to? I could understand if they were carrying an abnormal load.

Does anyone know of a good place to get a hands free kit fitted to my new shape Mondeo? Ford want to charge a fortune. Somewhere which does a good job at a reasonable price would be the best ..... and preferably close to Chesham/Amersham .... Any ideas?

Thanks Y.

We use NCF for all our car-kit installations, and have heard no complaints (I am ordering about 5 car kits a day at the moment with everybody gearing up for 1st December!) Not sure where they are based, but they will come to you and fit on

NCF are the company that Vodafone contract out their installs to, so they have to be pretty good I guess...
