They are filming a movie in Cape Town at present, and I was on the set today, interviewing none other than Vinnie "Nutcracker" Jones. [when I don't scribble here, I'm a football writer]
Anyways, they had a whole street scene laid out on a disused site, with plenty of LHD American cars*, police vehicles, burnt out vans, SWAT team vehicles, etc. All the vehicles were RHD, except for the Greyhound-type bus, which was filmed as being 'held' by Vinnie, and his tribe of bankrobbers.
Now, as the part we saw was filmed at the bus door (Man with gun holding fat bearded bus driver hostage), it will really mess their continuity if the bus is a RHD... or will it?
Are US busses LHD or RHD? And if they are RHD, why?
*US cars? Looked at some of them on set, and they are UGLY! Even the Volvos and Mercs look almost like Muppets compared to the EU or SA versions... Read more
Remember that traffic laws vary from state to state. There is no longer a law that says traffic must stop for a school bus in California, for example. IIRC, changed in 2000.
Just bought a 130k 1.4i 306 xr, 1993. The things i've not been able to sort out myself are as follows:
1. gear lever has lots of play - is this likely to be just the linkage bushes or something more costly?
2. Clutch is stiff to engage/disengage - is this just a dirty cable do you think?
3. There is a plastic arm hanging off the offside front suspension, attached by (knackered) ball joints to a bar that runs to the other side off the car, connected to a similar plastic bit and the front suspension, is this part of the anti roll bar setup?
4. Speedo doesn't work - I take it this model has a cable speedo since everything else stil works, are there any recommendations for taking the dash off, since I hear lots of swearing may be involved!
5. This being my first own car, can any other 306 owners recommend any particular budget tyres?
ta, will. Read more
FINAL UPDATE:
1. Play in gear linkage sorted by replacing front most bush (under air box).
2. Clutch still stiff but i\'ve not had thae cable off yet. - would a stiff clutch cable make the clutch wear faster?
3. New anti roll bar drop link sorted for a tenner.
4. Speedo fixed with new speedo drive unit, 46 ex vat! quid from peugeot parts. Old one appears to have worn inside.
Someone has sent me one of those stupid excel based quizzes, this one on logos. There's one I'm convinced is a car company (possibly yank), but I'm struggling to think of it! It is essentially a shield, elongated to a point at the top. The bottom 90% of it is red and yellow diamonds (elongated horizontally), with a blue bar at the very top, with some kind of yellow detail at the centre. Anyone help??
Another one I' struggling on: a blue crown with a lion's head atop. I think it's something to do with cricket, but I'm not sure.
TIA,
Alex.

I've recently bought a range rover with a thin "coach line" style pin stripe along both sides (stuck on) and a glass mounted mobile antenna. what is the safest way to remove both of these offending objects. I was thinking hair dryers or mild tickling with a heat gun !? Read more

morning all,
questions:
how many of you out there own and use a caravan?
how many of you have seen just how ferociously they burn?
the story!
last night, about 21:15hrs,i was alerted to the fact that *something*was going on in the parking area behind my house,(where i keep my boat, and near-neiboughs keep their 2-berth touring caravan).thinking that they were "messing"with the boat, i went out the back, whereby a gang of early teenagers, having seen me,ran away laughing and shouting abuse.the *neiboughs*had only been cleaning and tidying the van that afternoon, and had invertently left a window slightly open(to air it?).after a couple of seconds i noticed an orange glow showing in the caravan windows, realising it was on fire, i shouted to missus to phone fire brigade, they promptly arrived 12mins later(our brigade are part-timers who have to be summoned from home),by which time it was too late! all that was left were a couple of bits of burning tyre, and smouldering chassis.
i have never seen something burn as quickly or as ferociously as that,at one stage the flames were higher than the houses, and the aluminium panels were literally melting away before my eyes.
just made me wonder at the time how many people that use them alot realise that should they have a fire in one, just how little time they really have to get themselves and family to safety.
i have a couple of photo's that i think BR'S should see to help etch this point in their minds, and will post them (if somebody can tell me where/how on this site)

Reminds me of the time many years ago when we were sitting in front of our tent in Italy supping a glass of wine and a woman in the porch of a frame tent opposite was cooking some exotic Italian meal (it smelled lovely) when the tent caught fire. It disappeared so fast that she was left standing there amidst a smouldering wreck still holding the pan and looking round with a puzzled expression as if to say "What's happening?" Didn't even have time to react. Luckily no-one hurt.
And also the time when an Austrian guy arrived at the beach in Greece with loads of gear strapped/tied/roped to the roof of his VW. He had been towing a caravan, had collided with a crash barrier somewhere in Yugoslavia and caravan had disintegrated. They had collected what belongings they could, swept the remains of the van to side of road and carried on. Slept on the beach for two weeks and then went home!
When I start my 1997 Astra 1.7 TD Van from cold either in the morning of after work (i.e. after a sizeable period of inactivity) it often makes a loud bang or clunk just as the engine starts. The noise sounds like it comes from below and just behind the front seats somewhere.
When I start from warm this never happens. Any ideas?
Thanks
