Supermarket - buying without warranty 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Supposing for example 2 weeks later the headgasket blows, or you discover when driving home that actually the brakes aren't very good, the clutch clipping, the handbrake doesn't hold, or the auto gearbox starts jerking/hunting after 20mins driving. Do you actually have any "comeback" ? "Goods not of merchantable quality " ?? -
Peug 106 praise 6 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I bought a 95 model (1.1 petrol) in 2002 at 40000 and sold yesterday at 120000 and i found the car very comfortable ( i would ofter drive 4-5 hours a day) and i am 6ft 2, economical (48-50 mpg), and reliable only one non start in five years due to a flat battery. In the time i owned the vehicle other than brakes, tyres( the rears did 80000 miles and still had 3/4 mm tread left) exhaust service items and battery the only things i had to do to the car were as follows 55k head gasket and radiator, 66k wishbones replaced due to worn bushes and ball joints 80k new gearbox / driveshaft seal 9 years old new stereo 96k front offside wheel bearing & drive shaft gaters 112 k offside wishbone due to worn bushes ( only 46k and 3years since done last) i know peug's not everyone cup of tea - perhaps i was lucky- but i thought this was a very good car. -
Inconsiderate Speed Camera parking 18 Nov 2006 (Forum)
This morning passed another one, this time properly livered up, but stopped at the bottom of a steep hill (to no doubt catch the people who don't gear brake going downhill) which happens due to the bend in the road, not to be visible from the top. This road has hatched markings all down the hill, so causing the traffic to not "legally" to be able to overtake the van, as they would have to go across the hatched area. -
Keep or replace? 16 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Booked into garage later this week, she needs whatever is causing it fixed (which could be a leaky radiator or head gasket), a new pollen filter, fanbelt & tensioner, and new rear brakes. The gearbox is leaking too. I know she must sound like a bag of nails to most, but she appears and runs fine most of the time... The question is, do I sell her (I've got an offer of £2,500 from a local garage, though he doesn't know of the new overheating issue), or do I fix everything and hope nothing else becomes a problem? -
BMW 335d and service inclusive 21 Oct 2006 (Forum)
BMW offer Service Inclusive - full cost item is £1375 for 5 years or 60k miles (60k miles would apply to me as I have averaged 18k per year over last 5) and includes all services + brake pads / disks for the applicable period. BMW have moved to condition based servicing so I assume that primarily motorway miles may generate service intervals of 20k or so (please correct me if I am wrong with this estimate). -
Economy/MAF Sensor - 1.9 TDI Seat Toledo 25 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I'm still running it on 'holiday' pressures in the tyres (4 passengers and luggage) yet the trip computer still reads 45mpg average. It would be over 50 most of the time. Only other thing I can think is that maybe a brake is sticking. It had new tyres recently, and the guy that fitted was complete moron. Only remembered he'd left the locking wheel nut key in behind the cover when I asked him where it was! I have checked them after a run and all the discs burnt my fingers by the same amount. -
Fight and Flight 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I'm always doing 70 max and moving into lane 1/2 when it's clear. The response from the driver is either a hand gesture, foul language and stamping on the brakes causing me to take aversive action, or the driver just floors it to escape the situation at well above the speed limit. Why can't they just make a 'I'm sorry mate' gesture if it was a genuine error of judgement? -
"I didn't see you" 24 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Doing barely 20MPH with plenty of pedestrians around, I thought "uh-oh, she's going to keep coming", bled off speed, and with a gentle bit of brake, fully stopped a car length short of her. She then completed her hesitant manoeuvre - still all the time looking left - and with absolute shock noticed me stopped as she drew alongside and started to proceed in the direction I'd come from. -
Tailgating Why do it? 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I don't tailgate and I an usually the one doing about 60mph on the motorway in the outside lane, watching as one car overtakes anouther but as doing so a whole group of cars brake to avoid this one car and rarely does one move to the inside lane so as to stay at the speed they were doing. Tailgating leads to accidents, on a driving lesson doing 60mph down a single carridgeway I saw a lorry coming towards me but so close (tailgating) was anouther lorry which decided to pull out infront of me, The instructor was as shocked as me because he haddn't see this lorry either, so we slowed to 40mph pulled tight into the verge the lorry being overtaken did the same and the lorry performing the overtake came through. -
Mondeo, slow return to idle 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I own a 1999 V plate 2.0 zetec Mondeo, The only problem I have with it (other than the usual leaky rear lights and worn bottom-arm-bushes) is that it is a little reluctant to return down to engine idle speed. This usually occurs when using engine braking/coming down through the gears and can be a little worrying when the engine revs fail to drop below 1500-1750 rpm. This engine speed is then maintained for about 30 seconds or so, even after I have come to a stop and dipped the clutch, then it will slowly drop down to an idle speed somewhere between 800 and 1100 rpm. -
Front lock-up on golf gti ???? 13 Feb 2006 (Forum)
He left sratching his head saying he couldn't be sure what the problem was. I then contacted 3 mechanics. One said he felt it was the front brakes might need bleading as an air lock could have caused the wheels to lock. One said it sounded like the differential (whatever that is), and the other said it could be a lose rivet on the gearbox that is trapping inside the cogs. -
Where to service?! 24 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I am mindful that the main agent may see this as an opportunity to claw some of the discount back. Similarly, I may need front brake discs. What do you think folks, where would you take it?? -
2k to spend C220, Audi 80, Avensis 15 Nov 2005 (Forum)
s start, I am aware of the engine problem on the VVTi?s, any bigger probs on the lean burn ones. I seem to remember issues with front brakes. I?ve read the CbyC breakdowns, nothing too onerous for any of the above, opinions please. Thanks Ellis -
1996 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16v 2 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Have checked the oil level and was fine and topped up to max level but the light is still on? however looking under the car there does appear to be a very slight leak. 2, the front brake pad indicator light always comes on in the dash warning lights. Again there seems to be plenty of depth left on the front pads. 3,Resonating noise coming from the passanger door area during acceleration ( i think it MIGHT be the window or window mechanism/runners??) -
Would I have been arrested? 14 Sep 2005 (Forum)
As soon as I spotted it, the rear offside door opened and a yobbish looking person got out and walked across the road into the path of my car; he then stopped walking! I hauled the brakes on and stopped inches before I hit his legs. He then stared me out, and sauntered across the road whilst being generally abusive. As I had my wife and two children (baby doesn't count) as witnesses that he got out of the car, walked across the road without looking and stopped in my path, would I have been arrested if I had hit him and possibly seriously injured him? -
Lousy Design 22 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Acres and acres of cheap plastic (cheaper than the stuff used in my Z28 which I'd assumed would be impossible), switchgear that looked like it had been swiped from a '70's Datsun Loganberry and a horrible little 1.2L engine that sounded like a swarm of killer-bees under the bonnet (less than 20mph/1000rpm in 5th). The brakes grabbed badly at low speed and the A-pillar and door mirror hid any view of the kerb when negotiating the inside lane on roundabouts. If the Polo is supposed to be one of the better cars in it's class I hate to think what the mediocre ones are like. -
One to make the blood run cold 19 Jun 2005 (Forum)
But our driver must have been well-connected too, since a newspaper report two days ago announced that the conductor of the bus had now confessed (no doubt with some assistance) to "neglecting his daily duty of filling up the brakes with new fluid before each journey". Further developments awaited. -
astra to be kept to age 10 plus 28 May 2005 (Forum)
Aircon is left on all year with occasional hot and cold runs as recommended by HJ to avoid problems. Checking the itemised service bills however I see that its never had a coolant or brake fluid change - despite the annual services being done by a main dealer. I intend to arrange the coolant and fluid soon. I was wondering though if there was anything else worth having done or if its a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"(gearbox oil? -
Using gears to slow down 18 May 2005 (Forum)
I think it has now been established that using the gears in a manual car to slow down is out of date and is a driving test failure. Something to do with it being cheaper to replace a brake pad than a clutch plate. I don't drive manuals these days but when I drive rental cars which are manual, I still slow down through the gears because I feel it gives me more control, especially if I need to speed up again quickly. -
Mercedes W124 advice welcome 18 May 2005 (Forum)
I am aiming to run it for the foreseeable future and want to do whatever is sensible to ensure longevity over short term economy. I reckon to get the fluids changed - auto trans, coolant and brake - and sort out a couple of tyres. Knowing that there are some Merc experts on the forum I would welcome any advice on any other routine or preventative maintenance that would be advisable. Many thanks, MGs
