Clutch pedal has developed a notch feel/click about 2/3rds the way down, and only on the way down. Open the door and it sounds worse from the outside, but may just be an illusion. Hydraulic clutch on these. Any ideas? Read more
Thoughts, suggestions, opinions & advice welcome on the merits of both the 1 & 1.4 litre Tsi petrol hatchback, mark 3 Skoda Octavia.
It would seem the motoring press have the opinion that the1.0 litre 3 pot, even in a car the size of the Octavia, is adequate for everyday use, though for extended motorway driving the 1.4 is advised. We're firmly in the petrol camp, with annual mileage of 4-5K & most of that tends to be relatively local, with regular trips from Shropshire to the Welsh coast in the warmer summer months. l try to drive with consideration, sticking to speed limits & mechanical sympathy. The only occasion l now put my foot down, is to overtake the odd slow vehicle. Motorway driving is very limited, with the odd trip to & from airports.... Read more
I have a 2022 Scala with the 1.0TSI 115bhp i think, great engine.
Looking to either service it myself, or have it serviced soon, and been wondering what brand, type and viscosity would be best for my usage?.
Re viscosity, I'm inclined to go with 10w40 because that is the only oil offered by the Italian Piaggio Porter specialist I have used a few times now for parts (BTW, this was Castrol GTX Ultraclean). I'd assume they should know best, but when I Googled oil type for a Piaggio Porter 1.3 petrol, 10w40 was coming up in the results, but so was 5w30. When I put the reg number into Halfords website, 5w30 was recommended over 10w40 (which "may not be suitable"). ... Read more
Out of interest did you settle on an oil BBD?
My stepson visited us yesterday, among his other problems his Astra apparently has three temperature sensors strewn around the engine: one failed, had it replaced but it seems a software update is needed, which is a10 minute procedure at a Vauxhall dealers.
Until this is done the cooling fan runs constantly (overcooling the engine and no heat available from the heater) and a temperature warning light is on,... Read more
Did the Vauxhall dealer say why it needs a software update ? Is it anything related to this temp sensor fault ? Access to modern car diagnostic systems is becoming more difficult as it’s done with “doip “ diagnostic over internet protocol, and access is security protected.
Exactly so, the lad is Transport Manager at a haulage depot, the resident mechanic said this temperature sensor issue needs resetting but only VX have the software.
As the thermostat is stuck open and the fan running all the time it never warms up, no warm air from the heater, temperature gauge doesn't work, not ideal for his 40 mile daily commute to work....
Trying to remotely diagnose daughter’s poorly Clio from a distance - she’s in Staffordshire, I’m at Nice airport.
She’s telling me it’s running OK, but the steering feels a little lighter, the red ‘Stop’ light is on, as are a couple of other warning lights, and the speedo has stopped working.
Anyone any ‘top of the head’ suggestions?
I’ve had her look to check that the alternator belt is still on. Read more
Very often on Renault models the abs wire becomes detached from its anchor point and rubs out on the suspension strut .
Saw one of these yesterday. I'd completely forgotten they'd existed. I sense a used car bargain approaching in a year or so. Read more
Looked at some pictures of this car. Not as bad as some but it looks like a scaled-up small hatchback. Only when there's someone standing next to the car in a photo does its size become apparent.

It's more about aligning Hyundai's warranty with that of Kia which is 7 years or 100,000 miles from new - but the new Hyundai warranty can be as much as 8.5 years with no mileage limit on diesel/petrol models.
I have a car near me that gets used EVERY day
However it has had no tax on it since Jun30. It is now November and despite reporting to DVLA on many occasions the vehicle is still on the road. I tried 111 but was told it was not their problem. DVLA are always complaining they are losing money through unpaid road tax yet they won't get off their behinds to get money from this one.. His tax amounts to £320 a year so you can see why he's not paid.... Read more
There was a ford estate parked in our close, being used intermittently. No MOT or tax for 6 months. Suddenly one day towed away. Owner asked if anyone saw what happened. Yep. Towed away by xxx services. When he asked it was removed by council.
The laugh. Only a low ved band....
I have a 2015 NISSAN X-TRAIL TEKNA DCI 4X4 and the offside front suspension arm ball joint keeps wearing prematurely, the arm has been replaced 3 times in the past 2 years.
I had a Nissan dealer replace both front suspension arms and then at a check around 6 months later they noticed the offside arm was excessively worn so they replaced it under warranty. Around 6 months later I had the car serviced and MOT'd at an independent garage and they noticed the same arm was excessively worn, i just had them replace it with the anti-roll bar linkage as I was sick of Nissan.
I have the car booked in for it's annual service/MOT next week and my steering is making excessive creaking noises when turning at low speed which i've seen is a sign of ball joint wear.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and know why it keeps failing? I only drive about 5,000 miles a year and the car has done 40,000 total. The independent garage said there should be no reason it fails again after repair but sounds like it's happened again.
I would appreciate any help so i can get this permanently fixed.
Below are the notes from my MOT last year before replacement.
Repair immediately (major defects):
- Offside Front Suspension arm ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
- Offside Front Lower Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):... Read more
Have you had four wheel alignment done? I was wondering if something is badly out of alignment causing this problem.
Dont suppose you know whether the car has ever been accident repaired?
