I’m looking for something that i can be dailied but is also a lot of fun, i don’t need something silly fast but with a small kick and some excitement.

Was looking at volvo c30 or 2l mx5 but i know they’re rust buckets and prob not great for your only car and a daily. Prefer manual petrol but a bit of efficient fuel consumption would be nice. I’ve listed this below as it’s my current catch and think it’s a good deal for mileage love the idea of rwd - www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310263349508 Read more

What about a Mercedes SLK? For £5k you could easily get a low mileage 2010 model (R171) with service history.

There are three 2010 SLK's on Autotrader within a £5k budget, mileage ranges from 95-116k and all are auto. Include insurance write offs and there are another two. Given what he is looking for, surely the MX5 mentioned by the OP would be a better fit for his requirements than an SLK if going own the route of a two seater?...

Hi all, i have had my Scala for 3 weeks now. I am wondering why there are so few around. I narrowed it down to a Scala or Astra. I thought the Scala was a different choice, as ive always had Vauxhalls. Anyone else own a Scala? What are your opinions of it? I know Skodas share many parts with the Volkswagen Group, some say the Scala has the same chassis as a Golf? If it lasts as well as my trusty 2010 Astra i will be more than happy. Read more

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, but wanted to add my 2 cents of ownership of a Scala for a few weeks. We bought a brand new one (basically because the 0% PCP worked out quite nicely for where we were at). It was the 1.5 petrol SE-L as it was the only one in the dealership. Would have liked the 1.0L, and it would have been a better value deal, but hey ho, at least the car has plenty of poke. We are a family of five and we find that the space is brilliant. We can all comfortably go out together on day trips with plenty of space in the boot for gear. The kids in the back all report it is more comfortable and they have more useable space than our outgoing Qashqai. The engine has plenty of power and we are pushing an average of around 48mpg.

I recently bought a used Mazda 6 for the longer trips and UK holidays (as well as to be a general second car), but I'd say the Scala would cope with most of our family life. ...

Following the resignation of ORB, a new moderator is joining the happy team in order to spread the load.

Firstly many thanks to all those who volunteered, it is greatly appreciated and also recognised that there is significant interest in keeping the Backroom running, far greater than I (or ORB before he resigned) realised. In the end we went through the list in the order the emails came in, looking for the first volunteer who we felt would maintain the atmosphere of the Backroom - trying to keep discussions civilised but without being too heavy-handed. I believe we get that balance right the majority of the time and it seems to suit the profile of the forum.... Read more

Welcome Leaseman and many thanks to ORB.

Interesting discussion re PCH / PCP etc. I've historically tried to buy cheaper new / nearly new usually end of a model (cheaper / well sorted) as I did a very high annual mileage - and then throw away (well sell very cheap) after 10 years. This has effectively kept my capital costs well under £100/month over many decades. I suspect those days are over....

My father's Audi 100 sadly got in the accident from the back after a little lorry had brake failure smash at 20mph thankful it did not happen at 56mph.
When the car was taken away to the sc***yard, I thought about the older cars how great they were, because they had very big fuel tanks the Audi 100 is 80 litres (+1 overfill) it did over 700 miles from 1.8 petrol engine injectors I think. It was an amazing trip from my home to Scotland when we went on holiday in 1997 my father only filled up once in a week!

Now I see most modern cars have very limited fuel tanks than what I see back in the 1990s. My car is a Toyota Argyo 1.0 vtti 2017 it has 35 litres with a range under 280 miles is pathiec.
Is that something to do with emissions to reduce the weight of the cars to downsize the tank?
Fiat 500 is 28 litres, Panda 35 while the old for an example Citroen AX 43 litres, the Peugeot 205 it has 47 litres!... Read more

The A6 might be nearer in size, but over the past thirty years cars have got bigger, from bottom to top of the range of most manufacturers. The 100 was Audi's luxurious top of the range flagship. The A8 is its larger modern equivalent. The lesser Audi 90, like the modern A6, was for the 'executive' market.

If you think the A8 is the modern equivalent to the 100, you must also think the 100's period rivals included the BMW 7 Series and Merc S Class. ...

When people are daft enough to deliberately attempt to drive through obviously flooded roads do insurance companies simply say " oh poor you let us pick up the bill for your loss". Just that youtube seems to be full of such i****ic behavior. Apologies if this has been covered before Read more

Driving into it is both ignorant and stupid.

So your advice is not to drive if there are puddles on the road?...

An academic paper alleges what many have suspected for a long time. Drivers of the Subaru, Porsche and BMW brands are more likely on average to be "risky", with drivers of Subaru cars involved in proportionately the most “injudicious action”.

A study of more than 400,000 road accidents found that speeding, jumping a red light, overtaking on double white lines or ignoring pedestrian crossings were more likely to be a factor when a Subaru, Porsche or BMW were involved.... Read more

They can add a 911 to the list.

Just had to do a short hop on the M621. Lashing it down, surface water, I'm doing about 65, not much traffic, Mr 911 appears and disappears doing 90+. I commented to family in the car that that speed in that car in the conditions probably wasn't wise....

Peugeot Partner went in for service & MOT 2 weeks ago. 10yr service.

Service done, failed MOT as expected, needed a spring doing. Husband asked for timing belt doing as it's 10. Then we got a call to say it wouldn't start. There's power, but no starting. They plugged the computer in, computer says all fine.... Read more

Hi. I have £2500 to spend on a nice cheap motor. It will be a mix of normal and motorway no more than 8k.miles a year.

We really like the A3 (especially tdi models), Ford focus and for extra room in case we wanted an 2nd car for the dogs the VW Touran.

I've been on all their FB forums and what a suprise they all say their cars are best but they all say I could pick a decent one up for £2500

What do other people think in terms of reliability, maintenance etc

Cheers Read more

We had a 2003 Touran 1.9 Tdi, bought secondhand, which served us well for many years. Problems tended to be electrical, which I guess would be the same for the Audi A3, as it shares much of the same technology.

The main dislike of the Touran was loud tyre roar at the back when travelling at motorway speeds, something we never solved. Ours was a 5-seater, which meant it had a proper spare wheel.

Have they not even diagnosed what is wrong with it? These are generally very good cars, though Mazda’s customer service isn’t great in the UK. Have you contacted them directly? A nasty trust pilot review of the dealer always instigates a quick response from dealer and manufacturer from my experience.
