My youngest son (22) has been working as a barman at a local hotel for the last month or so. Obviously with a job like that, working hours can be hectic, especially at this time of year. But when I learned what he worked Saturday into Sunday, I was truly shocked and appalled.
(Bearing in mind he was working Friday 5pm to around 2am) He started on Saturday at 12pm working through to 4pm, then came home for a couple of hours. Back in at 6pm and worked though to (wait for it) 8.45am!. During this period he got no official break (snuck out for a puff on his vape a couple of times) and the only food received was a bacon roll at about 3am (back in to start work at 5pm Sunday BTW)... Hi I went past a SPECS average speed camera today and wasn’t speeding but I noticed a post about 20 yards before it with 4 black boxes one on top of the other all at slightly different angles. The SPECS cameras didn’t have the IR unit next to it like the original ones did so wondered if these were IR flood lights or illuminators (as looked like the shape of a flood light) to improve image quality at night, or if they were additional cameras?
Thanks Read more
I've noticed these in places too. They seem to be LED lights and are presumably intended to illuminate car's plates so the SPECS sensor can read them.
Hello. I am new to UK and got my car 4 months ago and practicing with it. I have not driven for 25 years. I only used the motorway a few times and each time drivers on the motorway were very considerate to let me merge. I have a few questions (experienced drivers might find the silly) hope to get some advice.
1) Merging: If I match the speed (50-60mph) of motorway, what is the safe gap to merge to main traffic? ... Read more
I cant see the problem with lorries on a motorway, just use the third lane? When there are only two lanes, it is an inconvenience for less than a minute but chances are their journey is more important than ours as they ars against the clock.
On the A1 it's often for miles and miles...and I'm on the clock as well.
It sounds like the front OS wheel bearing is knackered. Whining, rumbling, worse when under load (left turns). But, when you jack it up and spin the wheel, as best you can when its also turning the driveshaft, it feels ok and there is no slop when trying to wobble the wheel at any angle.
So can it be the wheel bearing, or is there something I’m missing, before I get the hub off and attempt to press out the bearing. Read more
Mmm, jacked it up and went round each wheel. No problems found, everything felt tight and spun nicely. Only sloght issue seemed to be the front OS driveshaft seemed to have a bit of rotational slop, but then it is the long side.
Sounds like an ideal partnership

Is the writing on the wall for big bare grilles? According to this camouflaged Neue Klasse BMW more tasteful griiles could be about to return.

Yuk what a hideous thing, makes the Allegro VDP look a model of taste.
I think this discussion has run its course and at the OP's request closing it now....
I bought my first car in spring 1964, our first year in Canada. It was a red Morris 1100 a couple of years old, which the owner had bought for the advantage of (then fairly new) FWD, rallying on icy roads. It took us 40,000 miles around north America, until we returned to the UK 3 years later.
We stuck with BLMC cars through the 1970s, usually buying about two years old, never new, sometimes privately but usually from independent traders. Because I did basic maintenance the cars rarely gave trouble serious enough for any warranty claim, and I have never done that, because I am a fairly careful buyer and I accepted that cars a few years old cannot reasonably be expected to be faultless – especially back then :-). More than once I have saved money by deleting a trader's used-car warranty from his selling price.... Read more
Last examples of the run out models has been the habit for some 57 years. Trailing edge technology is a sound buy in many cases.
Good advice. Our 'last of the line' model, a 2019 Peugeot 2008 1.2 puretech130 EAT6 Allure Premium is now 4yrs old, their early engine problems resolved. Cost £17,000, well below 'list' as they were trying to shift them before the new shape 2008 appeared. ...
Right then, because I'm on a very truncated budget (times is hard and all that) and my locking wheel nut key is currently trapped in my glove box which appears to be permanently closed. Is there a way to get a replacement key/nut without being scalped by the main dealer?
As an aside this is made a little bit urgent as apparently my MOT is due in January Read more
Deffo, there is wine gums too

Horrible hours and inadequate breaks often go with that sort of work but that doesn’t make it right. However I doubt he can do anything that changes his current employer’s regime.
If he wants to stay in the industry meantime, pending being a student, he might have a better experience with one of the bigger chains? Although I am going back a few years, friends of my son’s worked for a High Street Pizza chain and they had breaks and got to keep the most part of their considerable tips. They were bigger than the wages.
