It strikes me that, along with the people that thought of 'smart' motorways, that there are some very naive people with far too much faith in human nature, or some kind of political agenda, making this stuff up.
Whether you regard these rule changes as right or wrong, if you're going to walk or cycle in front of a car or other road vehicle and expect it to give way with only your faith in that driver's knowledge of the changes, their competence as a good driver, the road worthiness of their vehicle and your total confidence that they have actually seen you in the road, then good luck.
Someone needs to be questioning the motives and competence of the people making these rules, because it sure doesn't seem like real-world safety or common sense to me. Read more

If a car has a cam belt change will confirm 60/80K mileage so another point to look for.
The type of owner who will clock a car won't go to the expense of a cambelt change before they offload it , will they?
Car has a micro crack in the rocker cover ( known issue on ecotec engines apparently )
anybody know how long this takes to change or even the cost from a garage please ... Read more
Rocker cover is made of plastic on these .
I noticed that when a car maker try to flog you a new car, the first thing the marketing dept will throw at you is look in and out, second is brand/desirability and third is the mundane practicality.
How the world had changed, I was watching some old Cortina ads and the ad man was all about how good to drive the car is and the gizmos galore.... Read more
Assuming this isn't a wind up, how would the car be registered as being a particular colour?
It's something they were showing at a car show - probably won't be an actual thing...just call it multi.
Hi everyone. Really need some help with my 18 year old sons car. The battery light keeps coming on while driving, then the ABS light. He pulls over and switches the engine off and then the car will not restart to the point of no hazard lights or anything. As the battery is driving it looks like he is having a disco as the whole dash starts flashing until it is complete dead. Jump the car and then it drives fine for a day or then same thing happens again.
had new battery and alternator fitted along with a couple of other bits dues to failing MOT to the tune of £870. He is on an apprenticeship and can’t keep affording to pay out. Any ideas before we take it back to the garage?? Please help Read more
No nothing has been fitted apart from new battery and alternator.
My son is due to pick up his new car in april/may under a pcp agreement. His current was damaged at night by a car being chased by the police while he was asleep. The repairs are booked in for late march. My question is if the repairs are not done by the time he gets his new car, what happens to the repairs on his current car because he will no longer be the legal owner of the damaged car. The insurers have already confirmed that my son was not at fault and wavered any excess. Will this have any effect on the value given towards his new car? Many thanks in advance. Read more
He needs to talk to the supplier of the new car ASAP and make them aware of the situation.
A few years ago, it happened to me, I signed a waiver for the dealer....
Watched a Panorama programme on the net. The presenter wants to know why the roads are more dangerous. To cut it short there are less traffic police, breathalyser tests are well down so drinking drivers are escaping, smart motorways can be lethal, many many speed cameras are switched off. Wiltshire for example dosen't have any working. He drove from Lands End to John 'o Groats to gather his evidence. Add to this lots of roads in a bad state of repair and it isn't a pretty picture. They are recruiting 20,000 new police officers so maybe we may get a few more traffic police. Read more

So the authors of the new Highway Code are telling drivers to use their Left hand to open your car door. They believe that this will make drivers twist so that they look over their right shoulder and hopefully see an approaching cyclist! Failure to do this can result in a £1000 fine.
Who on Earth thinks these things up and what makes them think that the majority of drivers will do this. Even if you do it is no guarantee that it will work. What is wrong with looking in your MIRRORS before exiting the car... Read more
This is predominantly a motoring forum but the issue of cyclists is relevant and interesting given the recent Highway Code publicity. The interaction of both groups will generally be contentious given the sharing of each other's space and there will be strong views on both sides.

Thanks to all the people on this forum we took a look at the hatchbacks recommended I my last post and unfortunately they didn't have either the low boot height or room for what is now 3 dogs. Mainly 2 dogs but sometimes 3 when on holiday.
So we are looking for an MPV maybe small estate which has good avg MPG 40+ , Low boot height etc Totally happy to consider a diesel or petrol... Read more
You can borrow from high street banks from as little as 2.9% APR if you take £7500 or more. A 5yr loan of £7,500 at 2.9% costs roughly £134 a month and you’ll pay only £550 in interest over 5yrs. If you want a diesel Civic, or a nice Ford C-Max or similar you’ll need as a minimum around £8,000. If you’re still planning on spending under £5k then stick with a simple petrol engined hatchback.
It would make better sense to pay £550 in interest over those 5yrs than thousands on repairs with an older diesel MPV or estate.
My car has been keyed four times in the last few weeks. I want to fit a cam with a 360-degree view and motion detection. Any suggestions? The Waylens Secure360 looks a likely candidate but is this distributed/sold here in the UK? Read more
It is called the Tandem, but they are not cheap. Not sure how the price compares with the one you were interested, but on Amazon, the Garmin Tandem seems to be around £450. Might be possible to get it cheaper somewhere else if you do some digging.
I bought a Tandem from Garmin after checking with them that it would detect motion from the front and rear of the device. I've now discovered (and they finally admit) that whilst it will record through both lenses simultaneously, the trigger for this is only through the front-facing lens. This is not what I want. I need motion detection at the rear and sides too. So they then suggested further cameras facing the rear and the two sides of the car, sync'd with the Tandem. Drain on my pocket and on the car battery, methinks. So I'm back to square one now.
Well well Reno ,yet more anti cyclist comments. Yes , no doubt you can find cyclists that act like that but can you honestly say that a list of drivers acting in an aggressive and rule breaking manner could also be made.
You also made the point about cyclists not paying road tax; I drive a car as well as ride a bike and I have never paid road tax but then neither do you, it was abolished when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister. What we do have to pay is Vehicle Excise Duty and this goes into Government funds, there is no tax which directly pays for road upkeep.
When I do cycle I find that the roads worst surfaces are in the first metre from the kerb so that's why I and other cyclists want to avoid those.
I don't know anyone who is a regular cyclist that isn't a member of one or other cycling organisations i.e. Cycling UK and membership fees include third party insurance.
As for lycra clothing, it's just more comfortable if you are riding over 2 or 3 miles.
Having said all this, the more I read about the new rules I can see some confusion and the need for a rewrite, they have also been badly publicised and I have heard people on TV saying things about them which are just not true- I heard someone say that a motorist who is on a roundabout most now give way to a cyclist that wishes to join the roundabout FALSE. The rules say that if a cyclist is already going on the roundabout THEN the motorist is supposed to give way.
Keep Safe.
