I noticed a couple months ago a dampish smell in my car, couldn't figure out why until lifted the passenger floor mat.
The carpeting isn't really wet but it has water marks on it.... Read more
HI all, my car recently failed MOT on the above, 4.1.2.(a) offside headlamp aim too low! (and a tyre, which i have now replaced)
Now the garage want to charge me £18 to turn the headlamp adjuster screw. Surely i can do this myself, in front of a white wall or garage door?... Read more
For your information, there are 2 adjustments on the headlight . The one nearest the outside of the car is marked L-R ( left and right) . The one nearer the centre of the car is marked U-D ( up and down ) . Adjust with a cross head driver or 6mm Allen hex .
The Mrs has been having problems with her Astra losing power. It was diagnosed as exhaust gas recirculation sensor p0409, she took it to the garage and they cleaned the EGR. It worked ok for a few weeks but then happened again.
This time they blanked the EGR and remapped the engine management system. ... Read more
I was watching a series on Netf**x last night, set in the North-West with a lot of cars being used by the goodies, the baddies and the detectives, all with registration numbers in full view.
I was wondering whether there are some registrations available to be used by film companies that are issued for that purpose, in the same way that there are telephone numbers that can be used safe in the knowledge they are never going to be real numbers.... Read more
I remember reading somewhere (it might even have been on this forum but I couldn't find anything in the archives) that someone was watching a TV program (I think a Police one such as Juliet Bravo) and they saw their second-hand Escort van getting involved in a crash. Not a severe one but a fair thump on the side. They rushed out to their driveway and could see where it had been resprayed...
If someone hits your legally parked car, you weren't in the car at the time and you haven't claimed on your insurance, do you need to declare it when obtaining a new insurance quote? To put it another way, in that scenario are you deemed to have had an "incident" even though you weren't personally involved in how the actual event transpired? The repairs are being handled by the at fault driver's insurance company. All informed insight gratefully received. Read more
<< It's not for the proposer to decide what is or isn't trivial - insurance law has been simplified in recent years - if the insurance company doesn't ask a question, the proposer isn't obliged to give the answer - but if the insurance company asks a question, it must be answered honestly and fully. >>
I agree. The minor roundabout incident I mentioned earlier happened to us several years ago. Both parties stopped, examined the damage and exchanged details. When our car got home I had a closer look and decided that a likely bodyshop cost of about £300 to repair a small dent was not worth proceeding with, much to the relief of the other party. I decided the incident was trivial and not worth informing my insurer. What would be the point ? If I had, they could ask any question they liked, which I would answer truthfully. But what for ?...
Just came upon this (YouTube) video clip where a variety of tyre types are sent down a ski jump. There is something strangely compelling about it, but maybe that is just me!. ... Read more
Not too sure about the folks at the bottom of the jump. That didn't look a safe place to be?
Especially when you might recall what often happens when an F1 car's tyre comes off in a crash, bouncing down the track and sometimes right over the high safety fence into the crowd beyond.
Are we being difficult in expecting UK four star hotels to have better standards than the two national budget chains?
We went to stay a few days in a dog firendly hotel, very poor, and checked out after the first night. we moved to a budget chain, dog friendly and it was way better.... Read more
Well Well.
We managed to get away to an alleged 4* hotel last week on the Solent....
Well elonmusk having some buyers remorse. Last Feb had our Model Y in the SC ( service centre) for a month with no heat. New Super-manifold and thought it was fixed. New set of sensors last week and now this. -30c in #Saskatchewan and a very cold 1 hr drive later we barely made the supercharger
Trying to get home from holidays and my children dam near get frostbite. I am all in on the movement but your engineers need to understand our climate. Why not have a cold weather package that includes a supplemental resistive heater for extreme temps.... Read more
That's the advantage of being an endomorph - I create lots of body heat so I feel perfectly happy in my Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 type S which takes about 3 to 4 km to give heat from the heater!
The other day I put mine and my parents postcodes into the RAC route planner. The reason was that I wanted to refresh my memory to the difference in time and distance between what I'd consider the two main options for the journey.
Three options were given. The main one, which uses an A road for half the journey and B roads for the rest. Then there was a variation of the first which added another three miles by inexplicably sending me off on a detour. The final option gave me a route which, while similar in distance to the main one, had me zig zagging along mainly unclassified single track roads (I know most of them, they'd be no fun in a car, especially if you ended up behind a tractor!) The second of the two routes I wanted wasn't given as an option!. In order to get the distance for it, I had to specifically add a village it went through. Incidentally, this route uses all B roads and while the estimated time given was the same as the route using unclassified roads, you'd be driving on better roads.... Read more
<< In today's world road signs serve no purpose (unless indicates road closure etc.) because locals know the roads anyway (no need for signs) and those who are tourists follow their sat navs instead (again no need for signs). >>
That's nonsense. A lot more road users than you seem to imagine are not yet converted to doing everything electronically. Some of the quirks you mention are likely due to glitches in picking up satellite signals. Plus the (remote) possibility that some component of your magic sat-nav system may be out of order from time to time....
My 2003 Mk1 For Focus, which has a new battery, starter motor and solenoid, has intermittent starting problems. The flashing immobiliser, red light, on the dashboard, indicates that the immobiliser intermittently fails to recognise both of the ignition keys. Although this happens some five out of twenty starts, the twenty second wait for the immobiliser to deactivate can be embarrassing.
I propose to replace the immobiliser antenna and attached control box. My question is, if I buy a replacement unit from a scrapyard, should I expect any specific difficulties, such as both my keys being no longer recognised at all. Any advice regarding replacing an immobiliser would be greatly appreciated. It would also be convenient to use the immobiliser antenna from a 1.8 diesel on my 1.6 petrol car. Read more
The key reader and aerial modules on these are all the same from 98 -05 , petrol or diesel . They are all interchangeable and not coded to the car . Can’t say I’ve actually replaced one . More likely to be a bad connection to it . The pins are very small.Noted. Thank you for your help.
Change the pollen filter as a precaution. Could also be a leak in the ac system and or heater matrix.
