Hi The EML is on in my i10 . Had it diagnosed at the garage (not main dealer) & was quoted 670£ for a new timing chain Inc of parts & labour I realise this is a labour intensive job , but 670£ does seem really expensive Is this a fair price or should I “shop around “ & try finding someone slightly cheaper?
Thank you! Read more

The guy I bought it from said 10,000 miles ago

When did you buy it and was it from a trader? Sounds like a problem car.

Looking to get into a secondhand car when my current lease expires. Have not bought secondhand for a few years and have started trawling autotrader, etc.

Other than the significant rise in prices, the one thing that has shocked me is how many previous owners some cars have had e.g. 8 in 10 years... Read more

That’s very true and to be honest I know I’m not typical of many buyers, having owned 28 cars over 32 years (sometimes more than one at once). I guess my point is that it’s difficult to really know whether a car is a lemon and that’s why it’s had so many owners unless you can piece together the history of the car. Typically we buy nearly new or known to us cars, and that does de-risk the situation a lot.

  1. Been driving our 2012 diesel Sportage today around town so stops and starts. However, the engine management light has come on. I have a diagnostic tool a while ago and plugged that in when I got home. The message which came up was :

The EGR valve itself is not going to be the problem if it moves freely from fully open to fully closed, and if it works correctly when commanded to. What will be the problem is the air intake blocked or restricted with carbon deposits mixed with engine breather fumes forming a thick sludge. The only way to get rid of it is to dismantle the air intake, remove the inlet manifold and thoroughly clean it. I found a 50/50 mix of water and heavy duty traffic film remover is very effective.

Clogged plumbing (though of the EGR path rather than the air intake) was certainly a problem with the Accord, so much so that a US Accord forum member refused to believe it wasn't a diesel, which "we don't get in the US"....

I discovered to my horror yesterday that my driving licence had expired (some time back). I immediately applied for a new one online and got the notification that the renewal process was underway. I am trying to determine whether I am legally entitled to drive in the period until I receive the replacement, under Section 88 rules and it's not entirely clear, so I'm hoping someone can chip in and help me.

Section 88 seems to suggests that you can drive while waiting for a new licence as long as you have had notification that the application has been received (which I have). But it also seems to suggest that this applies if your previous licence runs out during the period you are waiting. I'm not sure it applies if your previous licence has expired before you put in the renewal application.... Read more

Hello!. Hopefully someone can help me here as it's a well populated drivers forum.

Back in March I purchased a Citroen C4 Picasso, 57 plate, with an onboard computer system. About a week after buying it, upon setting off at lights, the car stalled and I got a "Handbrake faulty" message, so I turned over and started up again and off it went. ... Read more

Get it scanned and check for EGR faults. Sometimes there is a fault which interrupts the engine speed data to the ABS / ESP ECU which controls the handbrake, but doesn't put the EML on. I chased this very fault on ours for ages till I twigged that the EGR faults were important....

We’ve had our car for just over a year, but it’s really poor on fuel on short journeys, if we don’t have a motorway trip on a full tank full then it averages below 25mpg, this is checked by amount of miles to fuel used, not through the cars reading, it’s fully serviced with the correct oil, filters and spark plugs, non of the brakes are bing either, I’m wondering if it’s just the short runs that cause this or if I should be looking for any other issues, motorway journeys average 45mpg, we never had this problem with our 1.8 mk8 civic.

I think there must be something wrong with it. Even my 40yr old 2.0 litre TR7 does better than that with its primitive engine management system of two lengths of wire.

I was going to suggest that could be due to a lack of namby pamby safety equipment making it significantly lighter. But there doesn't appear to be that much in it - google suggests 1100kg for the 7 vs. 1280 for the 3.

A friend of mine had numerous 1.6 Note torque converter automatics and loved them - his last one was a 63 plate and that was the last of the model - he moved onto Toyota Yaris hybrids after this.

Despite the efforts of the car service industry to persuade us otherwise, I shall continue to regard filters as lifetime components which, with the exception of oil filters, merely require occasional cleaning or, in the case of modern fuel filters, replacement in the rare event of significant debris blockage. (My TR7 filter is easily accesible for cleaing - once every 20yrs or so ;-)...
