The law seems pretty straightforward and the council appear to have made a mistake (or several), but it seems truly surreal to wave a 20 year old 5 litre car into a Clean Air Zone!
(Real World consumption from HJ for a 2006 "Blue Efficiency" model quotes official mpg of 30.1, which I believe may not be achievable in an urban environment, ahem.)

As far as I can tell, the size of the engine makes little difference, only that it be at least euro 4 compliant. This covers petrol cars from 2006 onwards, but presumably the Merc's engine also complies despite being older. Admittedly it does seem counter intuitive, but various classic cars will undoubtably be much dirtier and thirstier than a 5 litre V8 Merc, and they will also be exempt from the charges.

Indeed so. My dirty old 'historic' TR7 is ULEZ exempt, as is my thirsty eventual classic 2005 6litre Audi. But the well engineered W12 is one of the cleanest engines around - the emissions test at 71,013 miles reads... CO (<0.20%) 0.00, HC (<200ppm) 1. ...

Good morning, last week my wife's car was hit by a car transporter, the car was parked legally and she was not in it. The vehicle has been taken away to be assessed by the insurance company. If it is repaired and then becomes a Cat D, and we get the car back do they recompense the difference in car value, as a 12k car becomes instantly devalued by no fault of our own. If I wanted to trade it in a dealer wouldn't want to know.

Thanks David Read more

If your insurer decides the car is a write-off, but you choose to have it repaired, they will have lost the salvage value of the car so will pay you less than full write-off value. But if you make that choice early, 'salvagers' are not involved as the car will stay with you. I did this about 5 years ago for the car which remains parked outside (in full running order). You just need to keep your options open, including choice of repairer instead of one chosen by your insurer.

Hi,

Last week I managed to drive my car 5 miles with the oil filler cap not attached. There was no oil spray on my engine or under the bonnet, but the engine did start to falter and then there was a huge (and I do mean HUGE) amount of white smoke that exploded out of the exhaust. I stopped, waited 10 minutes after replacing the oil cap, started the engine, and the smoke was still evident. Another 10 minute wait and everything was OK, and has been ever since. Car feels normal again.... Read more

Leaving the oil cap off allows excess air to enter the engine. The injection management system will throw a wobbly and try to compensate for this and over adjust. Can’t see it being a problem in the future.

Hi all

We are awaiting our new arrival in November and would like to up our car size. I'm not a car expert or enthusiast by any means, I have been looking at some SUVs tiguan/mg hs/seat 19-20 plate, max 30000 miles, around 20-25k cost. ... Read more

BTL Is it a good idea with bank rate rising, Houses probably at their peak prices for quite a while and GOV now appears to be against multiple house ownership. Need to research responsibilities as a landlord and there are some iffy tenants around that make a hole in any paper profit you may see

Petrol for any car given your stated use, research running costs in view of current fuel prices depreciation etc. If you have the cash buy it, when handing leased cars back you can get stung on things like tyres minor body damage and wear and tear

I'm seriously thinking of buying a mid Life Crisis convertible as I've always wanted one and it's likely to be now or never.

I have a budget of £12k and have narrowed my search down to a few models which I would like some ideas on.... Read more

<< This is the case with the 205 so very little, if any, space is robbed from the rear seat by the hood and mechanism. Same for the MK1 Golf, >>

None at all - even with a power hood the mechanism was tucked away behind the boot trim, in front of the rear wheel arch. Personally I preferred the manual hood as it needed careful folding for a tidy result. IIRC the Golf had a glass screen while the Pug's was plastic, which didn't always last as well ?...

Boris is getting worried about how much acreage is being giving over in the UK to the process of growing grain to produce Biofuel . With the ongoing war in Ukraine there will be a serious shortage of grain to supply the worlds populations. He apparently will bring the the subject up with world leaders ASAP.

So it seems some sort of sensible argument on burning food to burn to give less energy may be about to happen. Read more

Based on 2019 figures to avoid Covid distortions:

  • 68m tons total oil use in UK
  • 12m aviation
  • 36m road transport
  • 9m tons to industry, domestic, agriculture, commercial
  • 7m tons non-energy uses - I assume plastics, chemicals etc
  • 4m tons for refining

HGVs and buses take ~7-8m tons of the road transport - the balance is cars....

At last, a long distance opportunity to check our 2019 Peugeot 1.2 puretech EAT6 130 computer accuracy - a holiday down to Cognac, mainly motorways (smooth clear French ones, bumpy crowded English ones) with a bit of local driving during our stay.

Starting mileage approx 13,500, so front tyres (presumably providing the info) approx half worn. SWMBO drives cautiously and slowly, so long term computer no. 1 currently reads 6214 miles, 42.7mpg, 32 avr.mph. I drove quickly but economically (cruise control no faster than 75mph even on the 130kph stretches). On return from this 'brim to brim' trip, computer no. 2 reads 1377 miles, 47.0mpg, 48 avr. mph. ... Read more

The on board computer of my 2014 Skoda Superb 1.4tsi is surprisingly accurate. My previous 2003 Superb 1.9pd was rather pessimistic.

They make little money on tyres as most folk search on line for the best price.

Upselling nitrogen and wheel alignment - then brake check, shock absorbers, wiper blades, battery etc is the only way....

After a recent new MAF sensor, the car had been running brilliantly. Really quick.

However being French registered, it had to have its Controle Technique, and the slob who was doing this whilst chatting on his mobile phone, left my car ticking over for at least 40 minutes. Now I am finding that the car is not performing as well. Lacking a bit of power and not so responsive to the throttle.... Read more

There’s no reason that leaving the car idling for this time should cause any issue . I presume it’s not overheating . An uneven idle , could be a spark plug , lead or coil problem ? From memory, it’s a 2 coil , 2,lead system.
