I will be travelling up the motorway once or twice a week and wanted a cheapish hatchback that of course will be reliable ( if any cheap motor is .. ) but also feel safe and solid on the motorway

I have narrowed the list to the following ( purely on price and what seems reviews on autoloader )... Read more

Hi all. My van has started blowing a 30 amp ignition fuse. It only blows occasionally, say every 10-15 starts. I've replaced the erg on the recommendation of the aa guy (igni2is wired through it apparently) replaced the starter motor, and replaced the ignition switch (not the whole ignition barrel). But it still does it. Tonight the van failed to turn over at all.

I pulled the ignition fuse, thinking it was blown again, but it wasn't. I put it back in and the van started. I don't know if that helped or was a coincidence. ... Read more

I live in greater London and the impending ULEZ extension forces a reluctant sale of my much loved Euro5 640d. Everything about this car has been superb for the last 5 years but now is the time to move on. Requirements for a similarly comfortable, fast and entertaining premium car (ideally a coupe) that can accommodate 4. I do only 4k miles per year with infrequent long distance driving with a max budget of £35k.

I've discounted the 997 as examples within my budget are likely to require high maintenance and luggage space on longer trips is unusable.... Read more

I had an S60 and V60 before - loved them. That's a great option 4.4sec 0-60 in 4WD could be tasty... I hadn;t considered that, thanks!

While I can't doubt the figures, most main dealers are offering way over the previous market price for good used cars.

I came to the end of a PCP deal in March, on visiting the dealer I was offered around 30% more than the 'agreed value' at the end of the deal, so I had a reasonable deposit for a new car.

The deal I got includes interest-free credit and a lower monthly cost.

Obviously, my trade-in was a low mileage, various lockdowns ensured that! Read more

Car makers ensue their suppliers supply components at minimal cost. Their purchasing power on car only items is enormous.

Come the epidemic, they stopped buying. But chip makers found demand for non car components for things like game stations and mobiles continued to grow. End of pandemic, electronics makers basically refused to supply product to car makers at low margins when they could sell all they wanted to other customers. Who can blame them?

Strange noise coming from the new Jogger.

Think it's clutch or gearbox related. Like a mechanical, gritty/whirring noise you can hear after changing gear. If you come to a stop, the revs drop and then this noise continues for a few seconds - like something whirring/continuing.... Read more

I don't do an awful lot to repair my cars myself, but I'm hoping I might be able to sort out a windscreen wiper problem without having to take it to a garage. A couple of months ago, my wipers got increasingly 'lazy', doing fewer and fewer wipes and not making it all the way to the 'home' position. I read that the first thing to do was to give everything a good clean, and that got them back to normal very quickly - for a while. It started again a month or so later, and cleaning sorted it out again. Now though, it's happened again, and cleaning makes little difference this time, nor spraying the pivot point at the base of the wipers with WD40. They generally make it to the top of the first wipe and halfway back down, then stop in the middle of the windscreen. Wait 30 seconds or so, and try again, and they go back down, up again, and back down to the middle of the screen again. I've been advised this might be enough for someone experienced to suggest whether its the relay, the wiper motor, or something else entirely. Any suggestions on what the problem is likely to be, and whether it's simple to sort myself?

Thanks,... Read more

WD40, though quite penetrative, isn't much of a lubricant, so may only have a temporary effect.

WD40 is a first-try approach to identify the root cause. After that, proper lubrication or replacement should be a cure.

It has been a long time since I bought a car, 17 years actually. My last 4 vehicles were bought at auction but the general public are no longer allowed into BCA and Manheim.

I do realise car prices have increased since C19.... Read more

Hi guys

I would love to get your feedback. I'm looking for a reliable hatchback (big enough for 2 adults and 1 kid). I'd like it to be economical and powerful enough to run short and long distances. Not something that chugs along on the motorway. My budget is up to around 25k and I'm happy to buy a used vehicle although doesn't have to be, It must, however, be automatic. Appreciate your thoughts! Right now I'm considering the Toyota Corolla, Honda Jazz or Peugeot 208. Read more

Must’ve looked like the airbags had gone off in a Suzuki Ignis! ;-)

Said it before and I’ll say it again, I have regretted buying cars that were too small, but I’ve never regretted buying one that was too big.

More comfortable, safer and more useful by and large. In my opinion anyway.
