This is my first post so hello, so please be nice ??

Just after some advice really. I currently own a red Renault Clio (2018) petrol 1.2 litre engine which does approximately 40MPG - i purchased this outright. I have owned it for about a year since passing my driving test, I have found it to be a excellent car in terms of driving performance and reliability in getting me around. Mine has done approx. 37,000 miles to this date (with me accumulating about 3,500 miles in the last year).... Read more

Hi all,

Sorry if I have gotten anything wrong, this is my first post to the forum, I was wanting to ask a few questions as I hadn't really found any answers to them anywhere else.... Read more

Any conventional auto in your price range is likely to be old and/or very high mileage. Even a Toyota autobox wears out eventually and cost of repairs will lead you to scrap the car. Moreover if you live in a hilly area a small auto is not a great choice - the 'box will steal some power and hill climbing/descending in an auto robs you of some control. I prefer a manual on hilly roads.

My strong advice is to go for something like a Toyota Aygo/Pug. 108/Cit. C1 in manual form. They are all basically the same car. Parts are about as cheap as it gets and repairs are very easy. They are reliable to high mileages and not at all bad to drive. The clutches are adjustable (very easy) so if the clutch feels very high and abrupt don't be put off....

I think my car has an issue with the gearbox. It struggles to change gear which results in the revs going up to over 5000rpm before it can change. I consulted a local garage who suggested they change the oil and oil filter to see if that helps but unfortunately it has not. It seems to happen more on hills when going from 30mph+. I have tried to accelerate slowly on occasions and then fast on other occasions to see if there is any difference but there isn't. I am only planning on doing short journeys with this car but I live in the countryside with a lot of hills so need it to work right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. This is exactly what the garage has done recently. They replaced the filter and the oil. This didn't solve the problem and when I took it back for them to check the oil level they said they had to top it up but didn't mention a leak. The car was still having the issue even after the top up!!

This is nothing new. I was an instructor for 25 years and this has developed over this time. At one time many sites purported to be ‘official’ and the DVSA were doing nothing to prevent it happening. The line from the DVSA was that if a learner wants to pay someone to book a test for them at a premium it is their business and nothing to do with the DVSA. By the way during my time as an instructor there was a booking system for instructors but this gave no priority over learners booking themselves. All tests were booked using the same system. Started driving lessons in summer 1964 .
No problems booking a test passed in the September.
16 lessons @ 87.5p per hour = £14
Car hire for 1 hour was less than a lesson and the test was around £2.00 IIRC
Call it £17 in total.
