I checked the oil level of my son's 2018 VW Golf and the dipstick was reading over full. The car is going fine.I appreciate that this is undesirable but wonder if the oil warning light will register "warning" if too much oil is present?... Read more

This car needs a new engine. However when the parts department went to order the engine, the order was immediately cancelled. Another parts number was suggested, but that was also cancelled.

So the parts guy was told to enter the original number, but every time he keys it in and places the order, it is cancelled. ... Read more

Just one final thing.

Asked the garage to stamp the service booklet, but apparently a new engine does not count as a service!

Hi,

I had the service light pop up on my 308SW the other day. When I plugged in my reader it gave me the code P15B3. Which I believe means the Additive is low. So I added 10l of Adblue into the adblue tank to fill it up. I then tried to reset the code and it won't go. Does anyone know how to sort out this code? Should it automatically clear itself after filling it up? Or could there be other issues going on?... Read more

If the Eolys additive tank is running low you should be seeing "Particle filter additive low" or "risk of filter blocking" on the info screen.

My partner inherited a bit of an untidy Citroen C4, 1.6 diesel 08. No problems for the first two months, then when my partner was away for the weekend she was under the impression that the battery was flat as it wouldn't start. She tried jump leads, but that didn't work, but a friendly person with some break experience got it started. Checked the battery and alternator and believed they were fine, but didn't mention or spot an issue with the immobiliser.

Fast forward and the car has been not used for over a week, so she decided to start it and give it a reasonable drive. The car wouldn't start, but there didn't sound like any attempt for the engine to crank. Lights come on, as does radio, wipers etc all at once, which led me to believe the battery was ok, or if it didn't have enough charge it may give a feeble crank of the engine.

This led me to believe that there may be a problem with the immobiliser and my partner did spot a fault message in french regarding anti theft. I did disconnect the battery, as this helped with an old clio I owned, but no luck. The person we inherited it from said not to use the key which had the door unlock function, which she had done by accident, but instead just to use the physical key which normally worked. This key has no chip in it, and we can get in the car and use electronic functions.

Just wondering what simple things we could attempt before we need further assistance. I have cleaned up the key, disconnected the battery, tried to lock and unlock the door slowly a few times but no luck. She does have AA cover, but I need to see if her membership includes key/immobiliser issues.

Any ideas are much appreciated. Read more

There's a 20A fuse in the under bonnet fuse box that covers the starter. When the starters get a bit older on these they get a bit sticky and eventually blow the fuse. You can stick in a 25A temporarily, but really needs a new starter, which is a complete pig to change! The one one my 307 would sometimes take 4 or 5 energising cycles before it would crank.

Is the 1.6 Ecoboost a decent engine in this era of Ford (MK3 Focus)? 1.0L seems to be the engine with the reputation?

Really enjoy my Focus, just might need to get another as this one is to be passed on at some point.

I’m running a new Grandland for 3/4 weeks - review to follow, if anyone’s interested - and the one thing that’s really impressed are the active LED’s.
Switch the lights to Auto, and leave them alone. There are 84 individual LED’s in each headlight unit, so as speed starts to exceed c30mph they’ll look to use main beam where possible. If it’s all clear ahead it’s a large white ‘tunnel’ of white light. If they detect either oncoming or traffic ahead, they’ll only extinguish the lights that would dazzle other folks. You can see a transition from light to dark just ahead of an oncoming car as they constantly adjust.
Beam patterns change automatically as road speed increases, motorways a longer, narrower beam, slightly slower A roads a wider beam pattern to illuminate verges.
If you’re offered it as an option on a new car, I’d take it. Going back to my halogen lights will be a shock…
I don’t have the Illumination Pack on this one - that offers infrared vision via a camera in the grille displayed on the dash, but it’d be useful if you lived in a more rural area. Read more

AFAIK the need for washers is dictated by the intensity of the headlight. Washers and self levelling are only required if the headlight has greater than 2000 lumens.

35w Xenons are rated at 3500 lumens, 25w Xenons at 2000 lumens, Halogens at 1500 lumens max...

Since taking delivery in September I've been doing longer trips. Getting more familiar with its capabilities. This weekend I did 145 miles virtually all on M ways. Got home with 19pct battery. That means the 200m range ( which is like manufacturers mpg figures it's an ideal) . At 14deg C on the day I actually got about 180 to 185 miles. That's going to be about as good as it gets. I'm pleased with that. It's up on the Range from a few weeks ago when it was much colder then about 160. Might improve a bit in the summer we shall see. The Mokka isn't as efficient as some EVs and has only a modest 50kwh battery. But for me it's quite acceptable. One thing is its clear to me the range meter is a bad guesser. I now use the battery pct remaining meter to estimate remaining range. Say 10% is more or less 20 miles. Read more

I’m very fortunate in that over the years I’ve driven some very good (and fast and expensive) cars, but driving had become a bit of a means to an end. Since I started drinking EV’s on a regular basis, I’ve looked forward to going places again. And the novelty of the performance from a Dual Motor Polestar 2 doesn’t wear off. Two things to remember before depressing the accelerator fully - make sure all the wheels are pointing the same way, and put your head back on the restraint!

New Dacia Duster II 1.5 DCi Blue 4x4 Prestige to replace our old L200 bought from an online agency in France as no dealer stock available in our region.

Allegedly an 01/01/2022 pre- reg car that was manufactured in October 21 by the VIN and turned out to have never been registered in France so may have come from either Germany or Czechoslovakia, and it's first French reg is with us.... Read more

This does have disadvantages, too. For example, using low range with a transfer box, I can choose any of the gears to find what works best in a given situation. In a typical manual these days, thats 6 different options to choose from while in low range. 1st gear low range which is (probably) typically lower than the 1st gear in the Dacia admittedly, is usually no good for hill climbing as it induces too much spin and not enough momentum, but good for setting off with a very heavy load uphill, or for engine braking downhill. Sometimes, 4th gear low range foot to the floor works well if I am carrying some momentum through a muddy field. Much more torque available for the traction control system to utilise than if I was using 4th gear high range, which would also be too fast. Transfer boxes are not complicated or all that heavy, but I suppose every ounce counts.

We've given up mud plugging in the woods and forests with the L200 for fetching firewood nowadays, we have it delivered in cubic meter pallets, kiln dried, cut, split oak and then a nice flat concrete floor in the barn with our pallet truck is much easier on the back than unloading the trailer, cutting, splitting and stacking it to season for two years. The most onerous 4x4 duty for the Duster will probably be dragging the 750 kg trailer up the wet slippery concrete ramp at our local recycling depot, and a bit of security on the unsalted roads in winter.

Hi all,

I would like to buy a Peugeot 2008 (2018 or 2019), with a 1.2 petrol engine. I quite like the car, with the only visible flaw being the small back seats. I plan to use it for light weekend driving and occasional long motorway journeys to the Continent with the kids.... Read more
