Any ideas chaps, son rang me today, he's 600 miles away in the North East of Scotland, pulling away from a roundabout the car dropped onto 2 cylinders and the eml light started flashing, he pulled over switched off then on and the car was as normal? He had a look at the plugs when home and they all looked normal, light tan colour..

He changed the coil pack and plugs last year so I've sort of rulled them out and have suggested possibly a blocked fuel filter?... Read more

Recommendations please? Astra/Focus sized car. I am tempted by the Sandero but unsure of the boot size.

Astra K have a few common issues, I know of a few on a fleet which have all had the rear washer pipe split near the passenger foot well and need a repair.
There were other common issues but nothing major.
You must avoid the Astra K 1.6 diesel if the dealer can’t confirm it hasn’t had the new clutch kit (don’t get taken in by it’s had a replacement, I know one which had 3 replacements before a proper fix was provided by PSA as when the Astra was under GM ownership they were useless at sorting the clutch issue out with the 1.6 diesel).

If and only if it’s been confirmed to have the new clutch kit then I would consider a diesel one, I know that sounds mad but they are a bit of a bargain at 3/4 years old but if it hasn’t had the clutch kit upgrade (not a mere replacement which is what dealers did for the first few years this issue surfaced) then you will end up paying for it.

The diesel 1.6 will do 10-15 more mpg than any of the petrol engine Astra’s.

It may be prudent to purchase one via Vauxhall Network Q so you get the 12 month warranty, make sure you ask the dealer the above in writing regarding clutch upgrade.

I thought the battery on my old Focus might be on the way out a few weeks ago, the starter motor seemed a bit slower than usual. Anyway after two weeks idle, this morning it was almost flat, just a very slight bit of life but amazingly it started so I was able to go off to Halfords and buy a new one. When fitting it later in the morning, I noticed the old one was a Ford brand, I don't recall replacing the battery and don't think I would have paid dealer prices either so assume it was the same one it left the factory with in November 2006.

Seems highly impressive to me. Can anyone better that life for a battery?... Read more

I think the battery in my previous 2003 mkI Skoda Superb lasted nearly as well. I've asked the current owner but he said he got many years out of the battery after I sold him the car in 2015 and can't remember the date it was changed but he still thinks of it as a new battery although he thinks it was just before Covid etc. The original battery fitted was a Varta.

Hi, just looking up the price of oil and filter for my galaxy gearbox and was surprised at the cost of ford oil, looking on eBay there is Exxon oil and a genuine ford filter which is half the price of ford.
Wondering if anyone has used this before or any other oil.
Thanks in advance for any info or advice. Sparky 100. Read more

Ford don’t make oil , so I can’t see any problem using a different supply as long as the spec is correct.

It's not surprising that an electric car towing a caravan and loaded with all sorts of clobber will have a reduced range compared to when used unladen with no trailer. The same is true of petrol or diesel cars.

The useful comparison would be whether the electric car's range is reduced by a greater, equal or lesser amount than a petrol or diesel car's range....

Have you sat in a pre 2020 Peugeot 2008? Unusually, you look over the top of the steering wheel at the dials which gives the impression of a high driving position. We've got one - it's a bit like driving a go-cart. If you are not very tall it has the advantage of one of the lowest level boot openings around for loading shopping, or an old dog.

The 12v battery in the niro hybrid is under the rear passenger seat

If it is the 360 volt battery for the htbrid system that is very expensive. Maybe it is in the boot?...

I just noticed two white streaks one morning on my windshield. They line up with how my wipers move and they are parallel to each other.

I was wondering if it could be a scratch? I tried rubbing my nail across it, there was a different texture and sound but I couldn't tell if it goes in or out. I tried wiping and pressure washing but it didn't come off.... Read more

The scourer side can easily scratch a windshield, as I know to my cost. There is a very very mild polish called Jeweller's rouge which cant do any harm if it does not work
