Hi
I have a Toyota hiace 280 2003. Unfortunately the cover to the interior fuse box is missing (drivers side footwell) I’ve blown a couple fuses but I have no diagram to refer to and I can’t find one anywhere on Google images. Is there anyone on here who can help?

7mm is quite a lot still. I've got something like 2.5mm on mine as I was advised that they were wearing thin at my last MOT (August 2021). I don't do many miles, and they've been fine up until now.

I did price new pads AND disks all around on my 2002 Honda Accord and including most of the tools needed to do the job (torque wrench, axle stands etc etc) I was looking at less than £200 (to do it myself)....

Question asked…

“When should I change timing belt/chain?
Is there a recommended point for changing the timing chain on the Skoda Fabia 1.2 petrol engine 2013 or should it last for life?”

Answer given…

“ The 1.2 petrol engine in your Skoda Fabia uses a timing belt and not a chain. I would suggest changing this every five years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first). The belt, tensioner and pulley all need to be replaced. But you do not need to change the water pump, due to it being located at the opposite end of the block to the cam belt.”

The old 3cyl CHAIN DRIVEN petrol motor was still available up until this model year. Without even asking if this is said 3cyl motor and not a later belt driven 4cyl TSI this advice was given which could result in some poor soul having their trousers taken down by an unscrupulous garage. More informed staff are desperately required on this website.

I think the forum regulars generally give better advice than the paid website staff do these days. Bring back Honest John.

I've noticed the same on the Telegraph's 'new' ask the expert page too.

Well just about to buy a petrol car. Getting worried as hearing lots of negative things about non electric cars ie how gov want us all to go electric and will try and find ways to make it difficult to run a non electric car ie tolls, banned from city centers, higher taxes and that if you want to sell it in a few years it won't be worth much as everyone will be getting forced to by an electric.

Hi, just a warning re this model in case you were not aware. On two occasions now I have found all four windows fully open unexpectedly. The first time I was made aware by a neighbour who thought my car had been broken into but I found that they were just open. I did a bit of research and found that if the key fob is pressed for a length of time it opens all the windows!!! Why you would need this feature I dont know. I realised that I had been decorating and had the key in my pocket and assume that when I was on the floor I have pressed the fob. I have just finished another stint of decorating and realised on going to bed that the key had ben in my pocket again. I thought it's unlikely that it's happened again however as its stormy outside I'd better check. Went out and indeed all the windows open again!!!! The moral of this story......get a decorator in!!!!?? Read more

OK, here's my entry for the "useless keyfob features" competition. Its based on very limited exposure to electronic keyfobs, so I'm sure there is a lot worse out there.

Google is your friend."Ingenium problems"

We can't say whether the Discovery mentioned by steveieb had the Ingenium engine or not as he doesn't state the age of the car, or engine size. The Range Rover Sport in the linked (Sun) story is said to be 3 years old, which may have used an Ingenium, but not necessarily....

News today that as part of your Flexplus current account, Nationwide has swapped to using the AA for recovery.

This relay system might have something to do with drivers hours of work.

HGV recovery drivers when operating within a certain radius don't have to adhere to HGV drivers hours so i'm told, beyond that radius they do, sensible really when the full outfit when towing can be 100ft long and weighing 60+ tons all in....

A wee conversation about cars in the staff canteen today resulted in me being asked, what used car would I describe as all the car you’d ever need? It came about during the usual spat involving a fellow driver talking about buying a daft twin turbo diesel BMW 335d for £5000. An all too frequent convo involving someone on an ordinary wage with little spare money thinking that buying a highly complex prestige turbocharged car would be an astute move and me arguing that it would not.

I’ve described many cars over the years as being a wise used option but to meet the status of all the car you’d ever need takes something a bit more. You can find reliability with a Toyota Auris or a Honda Jazz but both are utterly dull to drive so it misses out the driver appeal many of us still want in our cars.

I’ve suggested many cars over the years fitted this profile.

Nissan Primera 2.0 LS 5dr Mk I - Drove as well as a Pug 405 but lasted as long as a Bluebird. Brilliant things.

Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX Mk I 5dr - Perfect in almost every way at the time.

Ford Focus 1.6 LX 5dr Mk I - Brilliant handling yet reliable, comfortable and cheap to run.

Mazda 3 2.0 Sport - Great fun yet practical. Enough power yet no worse on fuel day to day than the 1.6 models.

Honda Civic 2.0 Type S 5dr - All the practicality and reliability of this model of Civic but with Rev happy 158bhp motor and firmed (but not too firm) up handling.

Today I’d put the honour on the Mk III Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec petrol. These do everything well, the offer Japanese levels of reliability but the dynamics are a level above the likes of the Honda Civic or Toyota Auris. They’re cheap for parts and inexpensive to buy compared to rivals but above all they’re still fun to drive. They fulfil every requirement a rational thinking family man or woman should need from a car. If you need more space they even give you the option of a neat estate too.

What in your opinion is “all the car you need” when talking about used cars?

New Ford Fiesta wait times

Essentially the higher spec of Fiesta you want, the longer you wait.

Barely any discount on list prices (!) and earliest delivery for an order this week is July with the dealer suggesting it could be later but a car ordered this week should be ready for the 72 plate.
