Around here, there are a couple of hand car-wash places (both do a decent job). I've been surprised at how busy they've been during this holiday. Every time I've driven past, there's been a queue of at least 5 or 6 cars waiting.
Personally, I don't see the point: on winter roads, the car is going to be filthy again in just a few miles of driving. So the question is: do you keep your car fastidiously clean all year round? Or do you let the winter crud accumulate until spring?... Read more
Hi, hope somebody can help with this.
I bought a my first car two days ago and I was given the full service history as well as the new keeper slip with some part of the v5c. The address on the v5c is that of the previous keeper and not the motor dealer that sold it to me, is this unusual? I’m asking because according to the car history I checked online, the new registered keeper acquired it in Oct and the v5c was issued roughly 6 days later (this is the v5c I was given by the dealer), however there seems to be a new v5c issued in Nov hence I can’t use the reference number on the v5c I was given to pay tax. The dealer seems to be unaware of this latest v5c, is he pretending? Im just wondering why a v5c was issued twice in the space of two months Read more
... the V5 only says the number of keepers and only my details are listed, not the hire company. I am pretty sure that in the old days the V5 listed the first keeper details? My Pug 207SW had been lease or rental when I bought it from a Pug dealer 11 years ago with 13K on the clock. Although the dealer had serviced it, the record carried a sticker effectively saying that no questions were to be asked but warranty claims would be honoured. The original owner on the V5 had been Provincial Securities in Leicester, which is a semi-dormant front company used by Peugeot - and maybe other marques AFAIK. I recall a thread on here many years back from someone all worked up about what he saw as skulduggery.
Not just Peugeot - Provincial Securities was a shell company used to register rental cars by Europcar/National Car Rental - Enterprise cars are registered to ERAC Ltd...
There are many 7year old and older cars( HJ's shelf life!) usually well north of £20k. Do members think that depreciation will accelerate on some of these with the rapidly changing factors(government and new tech?) or will depreciation continue as of old ie tailing off. The reason that I ask is that I think I may get more car for the money than a new reg. Read more
....(Yaris) the most reliable. In ten years and 70k miles in addition to service/ brakes/ tyres we spent £55 on a new exhaust shield and £240 on fixing a NSF suspension mounting issue. .... Nothing French, obviously, ....
I have had the same experience with my almost 12-years-old French car, except that mine has not yet had any issues with suspension mounts, despite a minor front-end collision. Nor anything electrical, perhaps surprisingly. Still, there's no reasoning with established prejudices ... :-(...
Hi all.... Hope you're enjoying the weekend.
Could you suggest a cleaning agent to clean and shine up a metal engine rocker cover?... Read more
I have used old brake fluid as a carburettor cleaner quite successfully....
I have almost decided to keep my lease car. A Volvo XC60 D4 Geartronic. It has low mileage, has given no trouble and tows like a dream. Good price quoted by lease company which saves trawling around for another vehicle, paying VAT etc etc. Also newer diesels tend to be smaller engines, lighter bodies and are less effective for towing a decent size caravan. So now to the question: I can easily purchase an extended warranty, but the Volvo one is more than others and I would be tied to their dealer services. Which are eye watering. On top of the warranty a service plan for the next three services works out at over £500 per service. If I purchased a private warranty and went to a Volvo independent service garage, would the indie be able to service properly, i.e. software updates etc. I am sure someone on the forum would have encountered this dilemma previously. Also finding an independent Volvo agent is proving tricky in Mid-Kent. Comments welcome.

If you are anywhere near Northampton we have a Volvo specialist at Sywell Airport who is Volvo trained and has all the appropriate software etc
Thank you Steveleb. I wish I was close to a similar facility. I am in Mid Kent near Tenterden. The nearest independent Volvo specialist I can locate is in Brighton. Amber Garages is the company name. Will check to out online and look for reviews. Closed for the holidays at present so can't call and chat. I would probably keep the Volvo for quite a few years, as long as we can safely and easily use our caravan at least, so could be another 6 to 7 years or so. As suggested though, it would not be a major problem to travel for a decent service agent. We have a caravan after all and could make it part of a trip so any other suggested garages would be welcomed.
I was shocked at the price of over £1600 for the next 3 services from the Volvo website. I don't know what that equates to per hour, but I guess it is very high. Had it been half reasonable I would have gone for it for peace of mind, but it just seems extortionate....
Ha ha told you that I would just made a new thread. I have no idea why people thing I am a troll. I am just asking for advice. I mean there are no driving instructors in my home town. over £200 for 10 lessons that is just stupid

All you had to do was refrain from swearing, and you can't even manage that.
Thread closed and account deleted. If you try to come back under another name we will spot you.
These cars have a heat bonded screen and mine is coming away slightly and letting water in. Insurance company say as there is no crack or chip in the driving vision area its not down to them. This car has just about had a rebuild, smacked by a post office van, front a real mess, scraped by a lorry next, side dented... both no fault...Christmas Day reversed into a wall, my fault. It's in next week to renew acquaintance with the body shop. Read more
Maybe some carefully applied silicon sealer will work if not.
Doubt it, unless you can find a way to remove every last trace of damp from the joint first....
Does anyone remember a wonderful tale posted here about an old chap trying to pay for his fuel who was not familiar with how pump numbers worked? This is going back many years - early 2000's probably. The girl behind the counter asked him which pump he had used and he replied 34. I won't spoil the punchline, but it was comedy gold. I'd love to re-read it. Read more

I have put this on because the other post has been marked as spam, but it brought to mind a real story I heard, actually a lot but I will restrict myself to only 2.

I've lost a few wheels in my driving career:
1. A Moggie Minor van that sheared the wheel, leaving the centre fixed to the hub....
Those who care for their vehicle's appearance are more likely to keep it well maintained in my experience.
Unlikely to be the type who don't check the engine oil level until the low oil pressure light comes on, or leave an air filter in long enough for it to rot completely away.
