Hi after some advise .....i'll try and do this as concisely as I can ,,,,,, recently bought a Mondeo 1.8l 2007 petrol and have noticed since basically day 1 that on starting it up the revs stick at around 3500 for a good few seconds before dropping to 1k they then fluctuate between 1k and 2k, until it gets warm then it settles a little bit. Done all the usual stuff ..... checked for vacuum leaks, done a scan (0135 code o2 sensor heating circuit Bank 1 position 1) checked that out replaced it .....still the same. so took throttle body off and Idle Air Control Valve and thoroughly cleaned them both still the same, so tested the idle air control valve resistance that was fine ..... now the weird bit ............ i forgot to replace the plug on the air control valve, started the car and it was fine ........ when I realised i'd forgot I replaced the plug and the car did what it was previously doing ....... so I thought I'd cracked it, bought a new valve fitted it today and .... no change .... i'm now at my wits end ......... can anyone help Read more

Very likely to be a split crankcase breather hose . Almost impossible to access without removing the inlet manifold .

Thank You I'll have a good look tomorrow suppose I'd better get gaskets ready and buy a new one first anyway just in case then I'm not removing it twice

One of the headlamp bulbs has blown in my son's work van. I've a selection of old H4 bulbs in the garage so fitted one of those until we see what offers are around on 'brighter' bulbs as the Berlingo's are a bit poor. Surprised that ECP only list basic bulbs, even for the Multispace. My wife's Panda takes H4s so I looked that up, but still no brighter bulbs. ECP used to list them as I fitted Nightbreaker replacements previously.

ECP do still sell a range of brighter H4s, but any ideas why they wouldn't list them for a Berlingo ( and no longer for a Panda)? I would have thought they would want to upsell where possible. Read more

That's my understanding, an H4 is an H4. I'm always a bit suspicious buying branded products cheap on eBay as there are (reportedly) so many fakes out there.

As the car is not being used that often, once or twice a week for short journeys, I trickle charge the battery at 1.5amps. I do not disconnect the battery but I have noticed that the car's clock is not showing the correct time so it must have stopped during the charge.Do you think I have done any damage? I may open the car doors during charge.

Many thanks Read more

A low current charger is unlikely to have done any damage . Just be aware that on later model A3 opening the door initialises a lot of the electronics of the car , which may overload the charger . Any good make charger should be surge protected .

A drop tester is a good indication of the health of a battery - how long will it maintain it's voltage under a heavy load - the cheaper ones are just about ok for occasional use, but don't leave it on test load for too long - it will cook itself.

Yeh, I liked the look of them when I was back in the UK last year, but I already have a Taiwanese (allegedly smart) charger, so I resisted.

The OP already has a charger too, but I suppose buying another one might be the easiest way around his difficulty....

HJ,

Re "Ins and Outs" from MH, Lichfield, I recall recently, Renault offering a no cost switch to smaller wheels on the Kadjar model. Usually on the drivers side door jamb of most cars, there is a sticker showing the range of wheel sizes homologated to each model, so surely it would be worthwhile for OEM's to offer different wheel sizes, either as NCO's, or at an in lieu of price, to cater for the growing numbers of buyers who don't want to lose their fillings at the first twig they drive over?. What are your thoughts?. Read more

SK paid a huge amount of money for an Audi A4 quattro S line 2.0TDI and is moaning because the road tax is £90 a year more than they thought. Seriously? Probably the same sort that skimp on their insurance and servicing. Read more

Can you let us know where, as I'm interested in buying a used KIA.

My Q2 after 23,000 miles has about 4.5 mm on all four tyres: as it's a quattro, they all wear more or less evenly.

When they get down to 3 mm I'll replace them with all-season tyres. I think it has enough traction not to need full winter tyres, and the all-seasons can stay on permanently.... Read more

Coo, that is an expensive size.

I could not pay the ridiculous price of those Mich's, but stop press, Camskill have got those Vred Quatracs you fancy @ just under £100 each, IIRC it'll cost a tenner to post 4 to you.

Yes, up here in Cheshire I think the indie I switched to a couple of years ago, when the previous one decided to close his business to concentrate on racing, would do the same. Read more

If this van has the 1.9 PD Tdi 130 diesel engine then 180k is just run in. Mine had 210k plus when I sold it on. Never failed an MOT over 12 years. No oil used and nearly 50mpg. Unfortunately, like all VAG products it was the other bits that started to go wrong, so I sold it to an enthusiast who was prepared to fix and repair as he goes along. My friend in the village has an 05 plate VW van too. He has trouble with doors locks and other small stuff, never the engine and gearbox though. Everyone says this engine will do starship mileages if looked after. Good luck.
