Im assuming the OP didn’t like our advice but for the benefit of others here’s a couple of examples of cheap family autos that would be worthy of viewing. The Avensis is a private sale and a cheeky offer might just grab it.

Hello.

I have a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol 2010 plate.

In April i noticed a clunk whenever i steered moderately/ hard to the right, ie slow speed turning and parking. To my untrained ear it sounded like the driver-side suspension.
I took the car to a garage and they replaced the coil spring and checked the CV joint and suspension. All seemed fine.

About 2 weeks ago a new sound developed. The driver side suspension was really rattling over any kind of bump.
My local (trusted) mechanic checked it and replaced the shock absorber and top mount, as well as the anti roll bar link arm.

A few days later the first sound returned, when i turn right as before. I'm loath to pay out more so I'm hoping the folks here can help identify the problem.

The power steering sounds fine, the reservoir is full and i can't see any leaks anywhere.
The car feels normal, it's not listing to the right and there are no noises at speed.
I can't see any lose trim/bodywork or anything else that might be fouling/ catching when i turn.

The one thing i have noticed is that the Coil spring and shock mount on the problematic side have been mounted facing the opposite way to the passenger side, if that's important. ... Read more

Have recharged the battery to full, don't think that is the issue, it turns over

A car's alternator should provide enough power to recharge the battery while its running....

G'day all and your advice required.

I have just retired and about to change my car to one that that myself and Mrs Monian can drive & share to gain the max advantage of my new found freedom. I live rural wales and fancy a crossover SUV that will suit our needs admirably and after hours of research, we have finally made a provisional choice.... Read more

With many (possibly most) other types of loan, there are penalties for early settlement to compensate the finance company for their loss of interest. This doesn't affect one's legal right to settle at any time.

I presume that this doesn't currently apply to PCPs because not many people are settling early. But if more and more people do, the finance companies will probably impose penalties. I would agree that this is a commercial rather than a moral issue.

The French prime minister Edouard Phillipe has now climbed off of his high horse on the subject of the recently imposed highly unpopular national two-way road 80 kph limit, having previously adopted the usual politician's "I know best" attitude when the limit was reduced from 90 to 80 kph.

Individual departments will now have the option of deciding which limit will apply to their roads. Therefore leading to even more confusion as to which limit will apply wherever you happen to be travelling in France.... Read more

"It takes several seconds to move a right foot from accelerator to brake". HJ, you know that's not true, so why write it?
Perhaps you could also finally explain why drivers of manual transmissions don't appear to suffer "pedal confusion" to the same lethal degree? Read more

Your right foot is already 'up' (on the accelerator) when driving. (angle of ankle joint)

Unless 'hovering' or 'covering', your left foot is 'down', on the floor or on a footrest; quite likely at a level 'behind' the brake pedal. So to LFB you have to 'pull' your left foot rearwards and up and cross and onto the brake pedal....

Dear lord, HJ once again propogating the myth against EVs.

Please tell us the exact, full and verified circumstances of this Leaf owner who was quoted over 7 grand for a replacement battery because as far as Im aware, Nissan along with other EV manufacturers warrants replacement of the drive battery if the capacity falls below 75%.

I can only presume this 'owner' wanted his battery replaced when well above the minimum warranted capacity or wanted to upgrade to a higher capacity pack. Read more

Same experts that brought us Smart Meters? I admire your faith in the local grid. I have read Ofgem's paper on the 'Implications of the transition to Electric Vehicles' The first thing I noticed was the difficulty of predicting the rate of take up. Secondly, there seems to be a huge reliance on multiple sources of micro generation (mostly solar panels). Many other solutions appear to involve massive public and private investment or ideas like electric car owners using their cars to put back electricity into the grid at peak times when not being used. There was no consideration of the impact on vehicle battery life of such activity. All batteries have limited numbers of charging/discharging cycles so the idea of using batteries costing thousands of pounds to even out load capacity seems very unattractive. However, of course, detailed technical analysis must have an answer to this! I hope the experts will have time to divert themselves from their amusement to solve the problem of the 12 to 1 variation of solar radiation (London stats) over the course of the year,

Been offered a top-spec Astra at at an attractive price (relative selling one). Trouble is that the seats are leather which I really don't like. Can anyone recommend some decent seat covers.

My ac light came on the other day so I looked on the forum and found a thread about putting the ac system into diagnostic to work out the problem. Did that, got it regassed and the fault cleared ...however, ac still doesn't work? No cold air?

I've noticed that, when it did work, when I turned the ac on the revs would drop slightly. Now, however, the revs seem to improve when I switch the ac on. In fact, the whole car feels more sluggish when the ac is turned off??... Read more

Common faults with Crv a/c are the compressor and the relay that controls it . Find a competent a/c engineer to check through the system.

Hi,
I need a new cheap car/van.
I work for myself in art and antiques and currently run a Renault Grand Espace
It’s great to use as a van, but also a great family car at weekends.
Only problem has been removing, then storing, the putting the VERY heavy rear seats back in again, all the time.
I need something where seats can be folded flat, so I can use it as a van, but then pulled back up again if I need to pick the kids up from school suddenly or unexpectedly out with the boys and got to take someone home from football etc..
Family wise, there’s only 4 of us, so don’t need 7 seats, but the extra room is great for when I go to auctions and buy furniture etc.

So do I keep looking at MPVs, or should I also look at SUVs? And if so what of each category??
A mate advised me on old Honda HRV 3 door, or Nissan X-trail for SUV. And Ford Galaxy or S-Max for MPV.
Any others I should look at?
What’s reliable etc?
My budget is small at £2k - £3k

Many thanks
Matt

Given your needs and your budget...why not consider a Toyota Previa.?

Don't the seats have to be removed for decent space? OP wants them to fold to avoid expensive visits to the chiropractors....
