The car itself is not the issue. .

When I went to look at the car the first thing I noticed when I arrived was the sellers apartment had a SOLD sign up. I rang the buzzer. No Reply. I rang several times with no reply. I then phoned her mobile number and the seller said she'd be right down. She in the car park much too quickly to have come from the apartment. Might be innocent enough, I've no way of telling.... “I've a list of questions I get my daughter to ask sellers we she comes across cars she likes on FaceBook“

From experience I’ve found that cars being sold on these buy sell and swap pages on Facebook tend to be overwhelmingly junk. Tell her to look on Gumtree and Auto-trader instead but as always exercise caution and I think she needs some advice on what cars to look at as an Alfa isn’t a wise option especially for someone on a budget.

I thought this might amuse SLO..

As i said in the other thread, one of my friends has decided to give up driving, had advertised the car, had a couple of replies and one guy offered a silly low price, pointing out various (minor) defects and trying to knock a lot off.... Read more

“One long term fairly basic Disco 3 on a 55 plate seems to be doing just fine, as is the now very old Disco 2, now i wonder if old school lorry driver habits of warming up and cooling down routines plus giving modern ideas of long term servicing a good ignoring paying dividends here.”

With the Discovery 3 it’s as much luck than anything else. Yes good maintenance is vital but it’s the electronics and air suspension that are often the killers on these things, neither of which are service items really.

The Discovery 2 was actually quite a good old thing. Far less complex and the old 5cyl (Storm) 2.5 diesel will run and run if looked after. Chassis rust usually gets em in the end.

I hope it suits you. I've only ever taken 2 cars beyond 140,000 miles and they were both VW group diesels. For that kind of mileage you'll also need to think about regular oil changes and services to ensure reliability.

Called in the local BP garage to give the olde gal a splash of jungle juice, and thought that she deserved a few litres of Super Diesel.

This subject comes up with boring regularity. It seems that for some engines it makes a difference if they're fed with 'super', and for some it makes no difference at all. This appies to both petrol and diesel.

Just try it out on your own car and see. ...

Very pleased with my new Picanto. One slight possible issue. When started from cold it immediately jumps to 2000 revs then after a couple of seconds it drops to a normal tick over. Garage says this is part of the warm up process but can't see this gets it warm and I have never before revved a cold engine right off. Am I just out of date ? Read more

How old is your Picanto? Its worth bearing in mind there is a service action on the latest model for throttle body replacement.

I have a Vauxhall Astra GTC 2. CDTI and it has developed a rather strange fault. Usually when a MAF fails, reading the wrong reading etc you replace it or clean it as it causes poor idle etc. However my issue is something I cannot find anything on.

One day the engine light came on, code reader, P101 P113 - Air Flow Sensor, so I checked the live MAF reading which showed no reading. So I unplugged the MAF and plugged it back in, and my live diagnostics showed it reading air flow fine again, then it would stop reading again, sometimes moments later, sometimes after a few days. I bought a new Bosch MAF thinking there's a fault with the old one, nope, same issue, so tried another new MAF after a couple of months thinking maybe the new one was faulty. Nope, same problem, works for a short while after being unplugged and plugged back in, just to stop working again.... Read more

You should check current suply and then check if you have signal to the ecu.
Check for a wiring diagram of the maf so you know what to measure and where.
Most likely it is a bad conection. You shoud get some test needles to put in maf conection so you can measure the voltage when the problem apears.
Keep in mind that the problem may apear to be related to the maf while it could be entirely something else.

Have you checked for any cracked hoses between the maf and turbo? False air intake could be your problem? You could have a disconected engine breather pipe or a small hose.

All in one: A Skoda Superb 272 HP 4x4 saloon or estate in Sportline trim may fit the bill if he can get over the badge with 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. It's no lower than a M5 and will hold an awful lot more. Fun to drive? Maybe not so much in corners but assured with four wheel drive and will pull caravan if need be. Read more

Re : Missing gears, I fear your correspondent lacks a basic knowledge of why internal combustion engines require a gearbox. Neither electric (or steam) cars really need a gearbox, though electric cars suffer from HJ's "bête noire" of only having two pedals, increasing the chance of hitting the wrong pedal.
