Hi there, looking to buy a good family car and have opted for Octavia Estate. Just wondering what opinions are on 1L engine. Only plan to have car fully loaded on the odd occasion for family holidays. Is 1L robot enough? Or would it be safer to get 1.4L? Deciding to ignore 1.5L due to horror stories about kangarooing.

Many thanks in advance... Read more

drove plenty of VW's with that engine working in a VW dealership in the early to mid noughties and it was a cracker. But as i said earlier, it is the gearing which is (potentially) most likely to cause problems in an Octavia with the 1.0. That old 1.9TDI Golf would have been geared for the 'real world',

Have to say that the 96 Golf TDi 90 PS had the worst "town" gearing of any car we have owned before or since. You never seemed to be in the correct gear, 2nd too low, 3rd too high. Luckily once on the open road all was well with 70 equating to about 2350 rpm. At the same time as we owned the Golf we also had a diesel Polo and that was a pleasure to drive in town. The Mondeo TDCi that followed it was very good in town but the very short first gear was all but useless at the traffic light grand prix. ...

My Astra is coming up to three years old and I'll let the main dealer do the third service. Looking at the fixed price service prices, an interim is £160 with the proviso:

"Fixed price servicing price does not include Fuel additive for low blow turbo engines. If required this will be an additional £19.20."... Read more

Just to draw a line under this topic, the car went in this week for the service and no mention was made of the additive. £132 for an oil change and tyre kick is probably quite reasonable for those of you used to dealer servicing, but it's the first time in over 40 years that someone else has changed the oil in any car I've owned. Next year.....

My daughter has had her brand new 19 plate Stepway for a week and yesterday she said she had flashing management and coil light for about 15sec after she had pulled away. I plugged in my OBD and it threw out a P0300 random misfire. She took it to the dealer this morning and they said there were no fault codes and all diagnostic values were normal but just to watch it incase it happens again. I'm thinking the dealer couldn't be bothered to investigate it. Any ideas why this would happen on a brand new cat? Next step is I'll go into the dealer and kick up a fuss but to me the engine sounds and runs fine, I can't see or feel anything wrong? Read more

Had what I thought was a misfire on my Yaris. Found it was the rev limiter - It'll do near 80MPH in third!

I tried this, but there is a window (might be 5 days) where once you have SORN'd it online you can't do anything else for 5 days, so it might be too late to avoid the double month. Gits.

Hi.

You guys have given me good advice in the past so back for more. My Motability lease car is due for replacement soon. I need a comfortable automatic car that easy to get in and out of and a large boot for hoist and mobility scooter. It cannot be too big as it won't fit on the drive and must be good both in town and on the motorway.... Read more

The stuttering, or kangarooing, that some 1.5 TSI-engined cars have is apparently not happening with the DSG-equipped models - so you should be all right there.

I believe that SEATs are generally more firmly sprung than other VAG cars - SEAT like to market their cars as slightly more 'sporty' - so if the Ateca is too firm, try a Skoda Karoq, which is similar in size and choice of engines....
