Re the Stazi thing, there's an overhead railway near the campus here which people park under, and since my car leaks, I'd been parking there too. Plenty of room, since its out in the sticks.

Then I got three hefty fines (with photo evidence) in the post and had to stop it, though other cars were still parking there. ...

Bought a 245SE some 3 years ago in outstanding condition. Steering a bit stiff, which was found to be faulty steering pump. Only second hand ones available, but when fitted, there was a tapping clunk sort of noise from under the car. Decided to put the car through an early MoT to find the fault.Car passed its test with flying colours, but noise still there. Car reg. Oct 91. Mileage just over 100,000. Any suggestions please? This noise didn't exist prior to changing pump. I have been casting around for advice, but no-one has come up with any useful suggestions. Read more

Remove the drive belt and spin the pump pulley by hand. Is there any stiffness when rotating?

Yesterday's edition highlighted the perils of relying on HPI and RAC history checks to validate whether a vehicle has been written off.
They highlighted two cases where buyers paid for the checks and later found the cars had been written off and repaired . Apparently the code for insurance companies to advise DVLA is voluntary.

They estimated around 80,000 cars are put back on the road each year after been written off.
Some major car outlets were named too , in order to show they are not immune from the scandal.. Read more

They estimated around 80,000 cars are put back on the road each year after been written off.

Quite possibly true, but a written-off car is not necessarily a hazard on the road, or even any worse than an identical unwritten-off one. When the cost of repairing a car exceeds its pre-accident value (less its scrap value) it will normally be written off by the insurers. It follows that the older the car, the less damage is necessary to write it off.

My own car was written off at 9 years old after a minor front-end collision. I drove it home after the accident and decided to have it repaired, which after the third-party insurer's contribution cost me about £250. I have driven it for another two years, and it looks and drives exactly as it did before. I am sure this history will affect its value and saleability, but in absolute terms that conclusion is unjustified.

My car is due for its first MoT - do I need to take it to a dealership or can I take it to my local garage without invalidating the warranty?

On HJ today, they advise taking the car to the dealership for MOT. What nonsense is this to be telling people. Probably paying the dealer full price for the MOT. The local BMW dealer here contracts out their MOTs to another garage so your precious car is driven across town for its test. Read more

You are lucky if you get your door hinges oiled, John. They can charge you for a litre of screenwash, but not (yet) for a few drops of 3-in-1.

Round here they point an aerosol of spray grease in the approximate direction of the door hinges. Similarly with brake cleaner, which they squirt through the holes in the wheels. They charge for both, of course.

Just after I bought this car the airbag fault light came on. It has now been with the local Ford dealer, who I bought it from, many times over the last year. They have not fixed it. I have it on PCP via my bank. What rights do I have, what action should I take. I believe a year is a reasonable amount of time ? Read more

Did you buy the car new, or used? Either way, it should still be under warranty.

They need to fix the fault as an airbag light is an immediate MOT test failure - rendering the car not roadworthy. ...

If you have a laptop consider investing in forscan code reader. Available on popular auction site. This has the option to make the car do a forced dpf regen.

Basically the car revs itself up so everything gets hot and burns off the soot. It worked well in my 08 mondy. Should cost about £16.

Thanks, that helps me make up my mind.

The leaving UK explanation is a bit iffy. Why buy or change a car, couple of months before leaving for good?...

Same thing recently happened to my daughter , I paid for insurance to put her on my motorcycle policy and that was recorded in the documents , however she had an accident when a van knocked her off the road in Sussex and the police said she was not on the database although I and the motorcycle was,, the van driver was charged with drink driving .

she ended up getting 6 points a 3 month ban and £300 fines and lost her job and place at Uni due to this muddle which was not her fault .. The magistrates did criticise the police for actually bringing the case to court and they were told to pay the fees for court and our solicitor but due to DVLA rules once in court their hands were tied as to penalty . Very harsh and definitely not her fault Read more
