I've noticed the recent Aviva App advert on TV. Can I just check on the legality? It shows a phone in a windscreen mounted cradle and the car driver tapping the screen - Isn't this illegal now? Read more

Leif

Yes but even with the wording from the above link :-

It’s illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle. You must have hands-free access, such as:...

Hi got a 2007 Vectra 1.9 cdti and I am wondering if the front shocks and springs would be the same as a vauxhall signum cdti thanks Read more

Hello on my cdti Vectra the Aircon didn't work so my mate used one of them DIY Aircon tools to Vegas it and had cold air for a while but when he put guage on again it said mechanical or electrical fault way would be best to look for also are petrol shocks the same as diesel and just swap springs over to petrol shocks as my diesel shocks are leaking

Is it necessary to increase tyre pressures before a long journey if the car is fully loaded ( people and luggage) ? Read more

gordonbennet

The old MB coupe we have has the tyre pressure chart on the fuel flap as usual, it's opposite to others in that the higher pressure is given as the default figure, unless you read it carefully you wouldn't realise that you are supposed to reduce pressures by 4si below 100mph.

But I occationally recalibrate ours should any sensors have adjusted themselves from factory settings. This needs doing on a strait road otherwise it could affect the rotation speeds if its ABS based.

My car recently failed its MOT due to not having a wing mirror cover (amongst other things). I thought this would be an easy fix but this is proving to be an absolute nightmare. When entering my Reg number into popular online buying sites the replacement part it shows me simply doesnt fit my astra although it fits others that are the same make. Ive come to the conclusion that my wing mirrors are different to others of the same model. Im wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that my MKV is a 10 plate and that it was one of the last ones produced before they started producing the MKVI? I know for sure that the wing mirrors are stock and not replaced i just simply cant find covers that fit.

To anyone who knows about a diffrence in wing mirros between same models or has an opinion please weigh in!... Read more

TheGentlemanThug

I can't say for sure, but I'd doubt that wing mirrors for your Astra would be different from another Astra built in the same year. The only exception could be if the body shape was different.

I assume you've looked at eBay? If so, their registration search is lousy in my experience. I was told that a set of bulbs wouldn't fit my Civic despite me having the bulbs in my hand!...

I had to chuckle at the current Audi advert that has the tag line "Clown Proof" Surely this is going to prevent a lot of people buying them! Read more

I drive two cars regularly, a Toyota Aygo and a Mustang. In the Aygo I find I get cut up and tailgated by a disproportionate number of Audi drivers, in the Mustang I find a disproportionate number of Audi drivers trying to prove how fast their cars are eg M6 on Saturday cruise control on and close on RS Audi in middle lane, predictably as I start to vertake he drops a couple of gears and hares off, slows down, I close up, repeat x2. Inferiority complex?

And yet Audi had an advert saying they had nothing to prove, it seems the drivers see it differently! like BMW and Merc drivers.......

The fact that the test is partly lab based is irrelevant. It is the way the test protocol is set up that causes the problem. MPG figures for plug-in hybrids are meaningless because the length of you average journey has a dramatic influence. If you only do journeys of say 20 miles, your mpg figure could be infinite. On the other hand, if you are going long distance, without the opportunity to recharge, the figure could drop to 40 or even less, depending on the vehicle. Read more

My neighbour had a 1.0 Ecoboost that averaged 36mpg at best, and that on a 60+ mile round trip on fairly quite roads and at a sedate pace; yet the dealership kept fobbing her off for over 2 years with claims it needed bedding in etc.

The standard of driving on the motorways is abysmal now. HGVs tailgating and attempting intimidation of timid drivers an everyday event.

The addition of L drivers will cause even more problems to drivers coping with speeds up to 80/90/100 mph, in some cases can only lead to increase in RTCs and fatalities.

Yes motorway driving is a must for new drivers, but only after they have taken the statutory driving test as part 3 driver examination.

The mind boggles at the civil servants sat in isolation making decisions about outing untried drivers in peril inspite having DTI instructors with them.

The failure rate of the present 2 part driving test obviously wasn't taken into consideration. Putting learner drivers who can't cope with the simple rudimentaries of driving into the maelstrom of motorway traffic Read more

TheGentlemanThug

If drivers are bombing up a motorway at speeds of 100mph then learner drivers are the least of our concerns.

It's always boggled my mind why such a critical part of our roads was never included in driving lessons or the test. Sure, nobody is going on a motorway on their first day, but once they've had a few goes on a dual carriageway, a motorway shouldn't be asking much. Driving on a motorway is easier than driving through a town or city, where drivers have to contend with pedestrians, roundabouts, cyclists and traffic lights....

Check the wiring loom across the top of the engine - it goes very close to moving parts.

An ex colleague spent a lot on injectors etc. In the end it cost £100 at an autoelectrician to fix a frayed wire and reroute the loom.
