I’ve narrowed my search for a Hyundai Tucson (PETROL 1.6 GDi Blue Drive SE Nav 5dr 2WD) down to 2 choices both the exact same spec, age (67 reg) and colour (silver), both with Motorpoint. They are also both ex-rental hire cars (from Enterprise).... Read more
Could anyone help me to diagnose the above, it's failed on both low and high idle test with the following numbers:

It will not have a choke, the light is probably the "Check Engine Light", meaning there is some kind of issue with the emissions control side of things, as have been highlighted in the MOT. To be honest, you need a decent diagnostics garage to investigate further, rather than guessing. The car has done a lot of miles and might be approaching the point where it's not worth spending a lot on fixing this, but really you need a bit more information to decide.
I had a Volvo XC90 as a loan car and was surprised that the engine was only a 2 litres diesel. For such a big car it went quite well. Lots of large cars seem to have smallish engines, Merc E class 220 for example, one I had a ride in had 335k on the clock so it's lasted well. So for the average driver do we need a larger engine or will a smaller one do the job? Read more
I'm of the "there ain't no substitute for c.c's" club too...always have been.
I make no claims whatsoever about the efficacy of my large engined vehicles..it's just that I've always preferred driving low stressed motors for a more relaxing drive..and always TC autos as well....
I booked my BMW X4 in for a service this week and they told me it is part of the recent major recall of over 330,000 BMW's. They can't get the car in for over two months due to the huge number of cars that need recall work, this means that the service will fall outside of the recommended mileage and time. The service adviser did assure me that my warranty will not be affeted though. It seems that BMW have got a major problem on their hands. Read more
Interesting comments about BMW and other German makes. I'm thinking of trading in my Q3 for either an A5 Sportback or a Lexus IS. The best cross over I've seen (but not driven) is the Volvo XC40 - certainly prettier than the overpriced E-Pace and the Alfa Stelvio. Good comments gildermania.
Reading hj for many years it appears too many people buy a car completely unsuitable for their requirements. eg. Diesel instead of petrol, large engines for city driving etc. And a common mistake thinking an expensive German car will be better quality than a cheaper model. Remember quality isn’t based on price Read more
My daughter has a similar seatbelt issue with her 2014 VW Polo, though she thought it happened when the car wasn't level, but it could equally be heat related.
I've had my Venga 1.6 2012 since February and this may be a numpty question but can anyone suggest the "correct" way to drive a TC automatic.
Let me explain: I understand how a TC box works and specifically on the Kia it uses a Torque Converter mated to a 4 speed gearbox using standard planetary gea***t. The gear selector has 1, 2 and D. I have two specific questions that Google provides conflicting answers for so wonder what the forum thinks.... Read more
I've a suspicion that my thoughts - and those of JohnF don't coincide. I've bitten my toungue a few times when seeing his contributions in the past.

Fantastic! I can see into the future! It's 30th May, yet I can see this article, which says it is published on 1st June 2018!!
I have the power. Read more
I don't even know your name but I REALLY do like your reviews.
Keep up the great work.
Not an Audi driver.
Come on Honest John. Don't fall for the 'you need to buy the face-lift version to get the tougher engine' line.
The piston rings were amended in cars built from November 2001, a full year before the face-lift was introduced. There are lots of under-valued 2002 MR2s out there because of this misleading information, spread by various 'a bloke I know said' comments online. If you don't believe me, check out the online Toyota parts catalogue.
And, yes, I've got a pre-face-lift 2002 model; better looking, lower riding and lighter than the face-lift, and it hasn't used a drop of oil in 18 months... I confess, I check the pre-cats occasionally because all the online gossip made me nervous, but they're fine too - the manifold in which they're located was updated in 2001 too. Read more
Surely the MGTF is more deserving of a mention here than the oddball and unpopular Renault Wind!
I agree, having extra power is better than having too little. If you want to overtake a slow-moving vehicle or are on a short slip road, then you may end up kicking yourself for not getting a car with more grunt.
A more powerful car won't necessarily drink more fuel as it could be driven in a more relaxed way. VED will be more expensive, but that's once a year, not something you have to live with every day....
