My son took his 05 reg. Octavia in for an MOT at a different garage and the mechanic remarked that it was the first car he'd seen for years that was undersealed.
At one time undersealing was automatic. When did the practice stop ? Read more
One of my track rod end ball joint rubbers has a fine crack and is weeping some grease. Doesn't seem to be excess play in it yet, though the rubber looks quite degraded in closup.

Surely CV joint gaiters are made of oil/grease resistant rubber, at least the OEM ones will be, cheap aftermarket ones maybe less resistant.
Dunno. They do fail, and I wonder if attack by oil is part of the reason for the failures. A CV gaiter is quite a large item, and I believe highly resistant rubber (e.g. viton) is relatively expensive....

And to add to the above, when you buy the correct plugs they come pre gapped, no need to adjust.
How do I change Alternator/Power Steering/Air Con drive belt ?
I've got a Cavalier 2.0i CDX 1995 (X20XEV engine).
Can't see how you get the long Alternator/Power Steering/Air Con drive belt off.
I checked my Haynes manual doesn't seem to show my car engine model.
The drive belt seems to go around 5 pulleys/sprockets, Alternator, Power Steering, Air Con, Water pump (?), Crankshaft and another I think is Adjuster pulley.
Looks like there is an engine mount in the way that I have to take off.
How do I change Alternator/Power Steering/Air Con drive belt, any advice, tips, links ?Thanks Read more
I managed to remove engine mount & auxiliary drive belt in the end.
Engine mount bolts were really difficult to remove, sprayed some oil & grease onto thread, then retightened bolt to work oil/grease into the mount thread, so rest of bolt could come out easier when I undid....

No real surprise.
It will all come back later in the year as we become accustomed to the new VED regulations.
Which car do you think will have depreciated the least after 5 years? For what it's worth, my money is on the Golf. Read more
I would ordinarily be in agreement ( I love the way the RS drives too - far more entertaining than the Golf R ), however Ford are likely going to be selling a lot more of the mk3's than the previous generations, and I feel that this is going to have an adverse effect on their future value.
Time will tell of course.
Hi all,
I'm looking to purchase my first car, which will mostly be used as a motorway commuter car, commuting roughly 100 miles a day.... Read more
I'll be commuting from North London to Royston. I've tried trains and as you mentioned they are extremely expensive, unreliable and inflexible. Fortunately, I will be able to avoid the M25 and I will be heading in the opposite direction of most commuter traffic. In term of motorway, I will have the pick of M11, A10 and the A1(M). As things stand I will only be doing this commute for a year, after which I can take a view on whether or not to move closer or change working location

Glad to see you mention the European Accident Statement; I received one on my first trip abroad by car in 1981 to Germany (East and West) via Belgium and the Netherlands. Although I have never used it, I keep it in the car "just in case". I wonder why the EAC has never been issued by insurance companies for UK drivers in this country; all the EU and other foreign motorists on our roads must have one? Read more

Not impressed. I've just spent over a grand installing a Thatcham approved CAT 1 Alarm, immobiliser, and tracker. The result? AXA INCREASED my premium despite that I'm retired, and have 'No Claims' going back over 35 years.

I am sure my 2014 facelift Superb II has what looks like "underseal" type protection underneath although it's hard to tell as just about the whole of the underside and wheelarches is covered in plastic. I suspect this is in place to help the aerodynamics. There are 4 gaps near the sills - to allow car jack access
