How to waste £ 0.5m and confuse drivers.
An unusual traffic calming measure dubbed an "urban crop circle" has been constructed on Tenison Road in Cambridge.... Read more
Hi folks - I've just seen this on the car by car breakdown:
BMW TSB to replace crankshaft bearings on 1.5 litre 3-cylinder engines. 3 day job. Does not affect 1.2 litre Peugeot Puretech engines... Read more
I checked with the supplying dealer - mine isn't affected apparently. Looking at the various Mini forums it seems it's 2014 and some 2015 cars that are affected - seen some posts where the bearing race seems to have worn/damaged the crankshaft depositing swarf into the engine necessitating its replacement.
how would the police get your e-mail address if you have one. I think some people who respond to these bogus scams are a bit simple. they would send their details even if they have never been in Manchester. Read more
Probably one of the last items on most people's list of "post-Brexit worries", but I wonder what will happen to EU drivers settling in the UK (and vice versa) after Brexit. Licences from the EU are valid until the driver reaches 70 and licences from 17 "qualifying countries" (most of the countries in both groups drive on the right) can currently be swapped over willy-nilly, but when Brexit is triggered, I envisage some restrictions springing up for immigrants from the EU (I assume some will be allowed in!) and a nice boom for driving schools (to say nothing of back street forgers!)
There may be some quickly drawn up deals with Ireland, Cyprus and Malta - just as there are already reciprocal agreements with Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Zimbabwe for example - but this is yet another administrative issue whose implications haven't yet been considered.
I've always thought it strange to allow a straight swap of licence when moving to a country that drives on the other side, but I benefited from that in Spain 20 years ago and my "skeleton" driving licence record still exists on the DVLA computer should I ever need to swap back! Read more
But even as things stand, if you are resident in France and commit a driving offence which involves the addition of penalty points to your licence you are obliged to change from a UK to a French licence ... so drive carefully!

Hi I have a Peugeot 307 1.4HDI with a gearbox fault. I want to fit a second hand box but understand there are various part numbers. The car is VRN BT53PBU (registered 2004). The Vin is VF33V8HZB83375099. Would anyone be able to tell me the correct part number to be looking for as a match. Your assistance in this matter is much appreciated. (Garage has already sourced two boxes but they were the wrong ones) Read more

Following yesterdays atrocity, it seems to me that an urgent update/rethink of HGV security / reporting / safety systems is required.
Rip the poor hgv driver and condolences to his family and close friends. As the guy was both stabbed and shot, it suggests to me that more than one hijacker was involved. I know for certain that he would not have allowed anyone into his cab willingly especially as its reported he phoned in about how the place he was in was full of muslims with very few Germans to be seen, obviously he felt unsafe.... I'd wait and see if the vehicle's AEBS actually did anything at all, i believe this not to be the case from my limited experience of driving a few vehicles with these systems, but happy to be PROVEN wrong when the media have finished speculating and independant examiners not politically motivated or influenced have produced their reports.
can the valve clearances be adjusted on this particular engine as the car i have
sounds like a sewing machine at idle, many thanks Read more
Blimey I didn't realise that modern cars still had manually adjustable tappets!
This is good in my eyes as in the past I've had trouble with hydraulic tappets as the miles pile on - saying that not had any problems in the last two decades, probably because I always prefer shorter service intervals
Just a note to say how much I have enjoyed the forum this past year, and of course previously too.
I won't be around for a week or two and simply want to wish all my fellow contributors a very merry christmas and happy new year.... Read more

I need to rent a long wheel base van for one day between xmas and new year to do a 400 miles round trip to Leeds. Enterprise and Thrifty are the cheapest with Thrifty asking few quid extra. Which one of the two would you pick from your personal experiences (if any)? As its a 400 mile round trip I want van to be as economical as possible and comfortable. I believe Enterprise would more than likely have a Renault Master and Thrifty would be either a Mercedes or VW but I could be wrong!
Enterprise / Thrifty?
Have you tried any LOCAL hire companies - usually a good bit cheaper than the Nationals....
so you end up paying just over of £5000 over 3 years, are restricted by the miles you do and in 3 years time you have nothing. Whilst this may suit some people its not for me Read more
