Following the recent discussion about the state of Britains roads, my question is what car can give a comfortable ride as things deteriorate further.
HJ s advice was to not deviate below 55 profile tyres and 16 inch wheels which is a good starting point.
From experience I found the MK 6 Golf on 65 profile tyres was just about perfect. But have you any other recommendations? Read more

especially now the Mad Mile at Welly is closed for 6 months whilst they build yes more warehouses for Chinese tat nearly stretching to Mears Ashby.

Well, well - this is my neck of the woods! I have just lodged a formal complaint with the County Council for an explanation why they allowed Kier group to close this busy road for so long. Nothing much seems to have happened to it apart from the creation of a tiny roundabout at the entrance to some fields miles away from a decent road in which vast warehouses are soon to appear generating a constant flow of polluting HGVs onto already choked single carriageway roads. The adjacent sports field is downwind.

I do sometimes wonder at the ineptitude of, or the power of large developers to influence, council planners. These developments should be beside dual carriageways with at least three lanes. Two for lorries overtaking each other at 1mph speed difference and one for the long suffering motorist....

Agreed. I bought an XF (3L petrol) in 2013. Use main dealer servicing if at all possible.

Alos I'd be wary of a 70k diesel that is on a '12 plate; the Jag approved warranty does last 2 years apparently but there's also a limitation that it applies to cars upto 5 yrs old....

The post about being hit on a roundabout is just too real. I was hit a couple of weeks ago by a lane changer but got it fixed for £250. The new roundabout in Basingstoke has multiple lanes but you need to drift lanes once on it to into the lane you need. (West to East) If it's quiet no problem but when the traffic is heavy lots of folks need to change lanes and it's q dangerous. Some one in the near side blind spot is my worry.

At the end of a hot summer period, after the first rain shower, approaching roudabouts can be quite hazardous. Vehicles leave rubber on the road surface and when wet it's like wet ice. I once skidded on the surface approaching one island, frightening me considerably.

Try telling young drivers that, and that oil is brought to the surface in damp conditions making it even worse, not that they take any notice as most dont!

Hubby managed to do 34 in a 30, standard SP30 notice arrived on green paper and we sent it back accepting the offer of the course. Paper work told us if a course had been undertaken in the previous 3 years another one cannot be done.

Husband had previous SP30 in January 2010 and did attend a course, effectively almost 7 years ago, no other offences since then.... Read more

A wise decision not to go to court. It is too dependant upon the magistrate of that day. They can use the guidelines which indicate no action should be taken unless 35mph was exceeded, but it is a lottery. I hope you sort out the confusion around the course and move on, poorer but wiser.

This will be the 1.9 tdi engine commonly found in various GM,Fiat and Saab models. If the fault is still logging a throttle pedal fault, then I would suspect either an ecu problem or an issue with the wiring between the throttle pedal and the engine control unit, which is (worrying)fitted behind the front bumper.Has the car had any front end damage? The throttle body has no direct connection the the pedal.

Thanks for this, I think you are spot on. I am not aware of any front end damage. However I have now decided to sell for spares/repairs due to lack of time/inclination. ...

Someone locally is selling 2007 VW Passat 1.9 S TDI which seemms to be in good condition and will cost arond the same insurance as my current car .

They are looking for around £2800 which seems to be around what they sell for online

Ticks plenty of boxes, one longterm owner even though it's been a company motor, full history, though that needs checking, if it hasn't had a service every year then it's not a full history despite what they tell you. It's a complex engine and requires fresh oil every year. Be careful it's not been a battered and abused work hack. Look for poor paintwork and signs of crash damage.

It will require a timing belt and water pump change though. I doubt it'll have been done by the previous owner just before selling and you'd need a receipt (not just a scribble in a book) to prove it. It'll cost between £300-£400 to do and I doubt the dealer would be prepared to shoulder the cost of it on a cheap car but you can try, just don't expect a discount on it if they do.

Insist the water pump is done at the same time. It's at its likely lifespan and would mean a costly strip down to get to it at a later date if you don't get it done while they're in doing the belt, it adds buttons to the cost of the job.
