Hi
I am looking to buy a used (three year old approx) Subaru Forester XE Petrol Automatic in the next two months for my wife and I am already looking around. I have found one in the Subaru Helensburgh (I live in Scotland) dealership advertised at £17,995. When I key the details into various car valuation websites using the registration number, the value even at a dealership should be nearer £16,000- £16,250. Does anyone know why this model would be so overvalued... Read more

Thr car runs well and occasionally fails to start. I wait 2 to 3 minutes try again and usually starts. it can literally go months between blips. it can be Winter or Summer so not weather related. Desperate for a fix as I really love this vehicle abd owned it since 1997. Read more
Loved these old wagons too. I used to sell them new back in the 90's and they were well made, comfy, compact, nice to drive and rarely went wrong. The monstrosity that replaced it was met with horror at dealerships and sold in a fraction of the numbers.
If you are facing starting problems when the engine is warm, the usual cause of this is the crankshaft position sensor. This is a common issue on these engines. I'm assuming it is turning over and not just sitting in silence when you turn the key?
I'd take it to your nearest auto electrician to diagnose. It could also be a duff earth connection or irratic immobiliser on a motor this age.
What is considered opinion on undertaking from lane 1 for a car in lane 3 of 4 on 4 lane motorways? Essentially confused middle lane hoggers. There is a whole lane and probably 4m+ gap. Is it still dangerous and if so is it any less so than on a 2 or 3 lane motorway? Read more
Highway Code rule 268:
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake....
Some of these PCP deals (esp. the Megane) are FAR more expensive than those currently (and have been for some time now) offered by the 'fleet buy' car brokers - for example, the Megane shown here is offered at £13,500 on such a site (best offer) at a whopping 32% off the list price. £18k (even if you can secure a dealer discount, it's likely to not be £4.5k) vs. £13.5k - its a no-brainer, as long as the broker is reputable. And of course, no mileage excess fees - its just a straight purchase.
Whether such deals will start to disappear in the new year as the effects of the drop in the £ are felt, who knows, though I'm sure many manufacturers will still be very keen to sell before the large scale VED changes for newly-registered vehicles comes into effect in March/April 2017. Read more
8p a mile after only 6,000 miles eh !. So they want you to pay £2.5k upfront and £240 a month to provide them with a space to park a car. They certainly son't seem to want you to drive it !

On what basis do you base your snotty little jibe about pensioners only liking cars with dull exteriors and interiors?
Perhaps you should think before making ageist comments as there is no such thing as the standard pensioner - we are all different..
Some of us pensioners would really like a decent choice of colourful exterior paintwork and matching interiors, such as cream leather to match a powder blue paint job or a pale green one to blend with a BRG exterior. Such combinations were readily available to the public in the late 60's and 70's and it is only in recent times that the public have been forced to have dull exterior paintwork combined with black/greys interiors.

Dear Greenfingerswhofishes, the HJ reports often include some banter and other snippets of humour. I am a pensioner too and take no offense at the odd wise-crack.
Here's one of my own: many new designs have been allowed to pass beyond (presumably young) stylists to become vehicles filled with unnecessary gadgets, gloomy interiors, and pill-box windows one can barely see out of...trends that are all in the wrong direction, in the opinion of this old coot!
Happy 2017 to all the HJ readers out there.

My company received a letter to identify the driver of a company car for a sppeding offence in a tempory 40mph speed limit. We have a few company cars and several drivers. We asked for photographic evidence to help identify the driver but you cannot see the driver in the photo. We replied to say that we had no record of who was driving . We have recieved a reply to say that it is the companies responsibilty to identify the driver at the time of the offence and failure to do so is an offence and subject to a fine of up to £1000 plus 6 penalty points. If we are still unable to provide the information the matter will be passed to police for further enquiry.

Ok I passed my full UK car driving test in 2005, in 2008 I passed a bus and lorry driving test.
I decided it would save me money and be easier if I got myself a little moped to drive to the bus depot and let my missus drive my car while I'm at work. Great what could be simpler than that? So I enquired and found that I have to pass a test to ride a little hair drier on wheels! Had I passed my driving test before 1/2/2001 I'd not need to do this compulsory training!
It's clearly a stupid rule. In any case how is someone who passed their car test before 31/1/2001 magically more competent to ride a moped, but if you passed it after 2/2/2001 you're classed as incompetent to ride without training??? Typical government stupidity! Or is it to make more money? No doubt that's a factor.
I've been driving for over 10 years, I can drive a 15 metre long bus and an 18 wheel lorry, Yet I need training to ride a hair drier moped on wheels! I've not ever had a single penalty point to my name!
I mean is it not better to encourage more car drivers on to mopeds to reduce congestion and pollution? Surely having to take training, book time off for that course and pull out money etc is going to deter drivers from getting a moped. And is it fair that other drivers are excuse this expense and fuss? Why can't they just let all car drivers ride a moped without this fuss or at least those who've held a car licence for at least 2 or 3 years?
In Ireland you can ride a moped on a car licence as you can in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and most European countries.
Well done for losing the common sense award DVLA! Read more
It always confuses me that people seem to think that the smaller the size of the vehicle means that they can't create just as much death and carnage.
A pedestrian or cyclist can kill just as many car drivers, as a car driver can....
This was taken from a current thread. "Have you ever noticed that very few small cars or motorcyclists will go up the inside of a HGV with it's left indicators flashing and yet 90% of cyclists will."
