I have a Dart account and crossed in a hired van yesterday. Tried to include it on my account for that day to get 1/3rd off but couldn't as 'vehicle already registered'. Phoned Dart and spoke to a woman who refused to say whether or not it had been paid and did not seem to understand that I did not want Dart to get two payments (I don't think they should be getting any payment at all, but that's another subject).
So I sent them an email to ask them to sort it out, to which they 'will respond within 5 working days'. So I am left wondering if I will get a fine.... Read more
The vehicle was already registered and not eligible for discount on OP's account. Rather than just pay the charge conventionally, and the discount must be small beer compared with van hire, he chances a fine. If he gets one he'll struggle to win an appeal.
This is my thoughts too as the discount for paying by account is not much at all but, there is one thing that I'm not sure of. If the vehicle is registered on someones account, can you pay it manually or will it flag up as having been paid by account?
HJ was extoling L foot breaking in the Telegraph this weekend. I have been driving autos for years and have tried the L foot method but it dosen't feel safe to me. Some folks may find it ok but my R foot feels to have control while the L is like bowing a violin with a hammer. In an emergency the natural thing for me is to operate the brake with the R foot and surely instinct in that situation has to be right. Any thoughts? Read more
Sadly, another tragic accident with all too familiar characteristics, reported today: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4058486/Pensioner...l
From previous comments, it seems very clear that LFB works for some people but not for others; only-automatic drivers have a different perspective to drivers who regularly drive both types of transmission.
"Standardised" controls in cars are still a long way off and every manufacturer thinks they are right. (Toyota, I'm looking at you and the stupid Avensis parking brake button, and there are many more "sinners".) Some serious research is urgently needed into gear selector operation (the "gate" layout, need for indents, pushes or pulls, lights, buzzers, whatever) as well as aspects like pedal size, shape, position and angle for both manuals and automatics.
Back in 2014 whn my Leon was approaching a year old I bought GAP cover form a company called Aequitas Automotive Ltd who trade online as GAP Insurance 123. Good cover and good service for about £120. They were registered with the FCA so no issues with them being dodgy.
When the wife bought her Note in 2015 we repeated the excercise, same company, good price, about £130.... Read more
When I started out selling for a large dealer in the 90's GAP was a terrible product from a customers point of view and one we as sales staff were under pressure to sell as the firm made a huge margin from it.
Back then all it covered was the difference between what you owed on a car and the likely payout if you were involved in a bump that wrote it off and that was it. It was irrelevant to most customers, only really of any use if you were putting down a tiny deposit and only if you bumped it within months of getting it as your debt to value on the car would rapidly decrease as your loan was replayed. But still I was given into bother for not pushing a product I didn't regard as value for money.
From memory it was around £200 but the dealer made at least half that in profit and often if a customer was putting down a small deposit the finance company would only approve it if you sold GAP with the finance. Must've been a huge number of people missold this product over the years. I'm glad it's a vastly better product today, the result of competition and misselling claims over the years.
I am in the process of buying a new car for cash from a main dealer. They insist that I go up there, (100 miles round trip), at least four days before I take deliver to sign some papers, (gap insurance?). They say that this is a recent requirement by the FCA,
I have contacted the FCA who know nothing about this, and I very much suspect that no such regulation exists. Does anyone know if ir does or not?... Read more
Well said skidpan. I agree, insist on the V5 either in your hand or coming directly to you within days, and get it in writing. This dealer sound a bit slippery to me. It must be Renault dealers in general.
Many moons ago when eldest daughter wanted her first car she went into a Renault dealer who really did a job on her and 'sold' her a used Clio at well over current value and payments spread over 5 years at so much per week, which sounded very affordable. This meant she would never ever have any value in the car at all. They sent her home with the finace documents for me to sign. I of course refused, lots of tears until I finally convinced her in black and white what they had done. They has also broken the law because finance documents have to be signed and witnessed at the dealers premises. I telephoned the sales manager who was not pleased that I was not going to let the deal go through, and he told me the finance forms had been filled out and were legally binding. Yeah right. When I said did he mean the forms I had in my home he started to bluster about legal claims etc. I then told him that according the finance regulator he had broken the law by letting these documents of the premises. You could have heard a pin drop for about 10 seconds. Then I suggested that some flowers and chocolates for my daughter should ease the disappointment she experienced. They sent the flowers and chocs and I returned the forms, in person and made a point of warning him that if ever I heard of anyone being subjected to the same tactics I would report the matter. he assured me the slaesman involved had been disciplined and would not repeat his behaviour. Soon after they stopped this ridiculous 'sales plan' of theirs....

I heard that Tactical Oilfield products are just made from treacle with a bit of petrol in it.
I have a frustrating issue with my wife's Galaxy. When we bought the car at the beginning of the year the Auto Lock feature was activated. We have 3 kids with the youngest only 18 months old so Auto Lock is not good for the family.
I eventually found the correct process for deactivating it. The problem we have now is that after a while (approx a week) the Auto Lock reactivates uncommanded.... Read more
It's not a glitch, it's a feature on many modern cars and the Galaxy has it. I've had it on several cars and vans over the years. If left unlocked the car will lock itself within around 45s or so unless it senses someone sitting in it or the key is in the ignition or a door is open. It's possible there's a fault if it's not picking up the weight of someone sitting on one of the seats, even a child should trigger it. If I sit my shopping on the passenger seat of our Polo it sets off the seatbelt alarm when driving along. If the child is in an isofix seat it won't sense it though.
Maybe so but it's hopeless on ice. No use if you're in a hilly area in the depth of Winter. May as well throw the key fob away and come back in the Spring Read more

It's going to be interesting in the next two or three years as the political forces against diesel and the extra filtering requirements begin to make diesel an expensive and pointless exercise as there MPG advantage is whittled down further and the extra costs unless you are a very high mileage driver make the whole point of diesel ownership disappear.
All the major manufacturers are bringing in new petrol engines in anticipation of a swing away from diesel and it is surely only a matter of time to when the have no advantage at all. Read more
Angelcyn is spot on. Diesel is going to be gutted over the next few years by the bureaucracy.
With oil unlikely to return to three figures for a few decades due to Shale, diesel is a pointless throwback to a particular point in time when politicians were obsessed controlling plant food and peak oil was just around the corner.
Looking forward to scrapping those diesels and breathing more easily!!
Thanks guys managed to sort it out in the end repaired my old key myself with case from Ebay but still a bit iffy can only rely on it to start the car not open lock doors, so have that one as a spare and got a new key for £120 took the lad 10 minutes to do and feel safe having a spare key, used these seemed to be cheapest by far 3peakscarkeys.com/
