Ten years or so ago only a complete idiot would contemplate overtaking an articulated HGV as it manouvers through a roundabout. It now seems pretty much commonplace.

Thinking of the roundabouts along the A43 from M1 to M40 and also A31 from M27 to Ferndown as very good examples of this driving style.... Read more

"I've always been baffled by the number of driving lessons recommended as required to pass constantly increasing over time while standards continue to drop - 50 years ago it was 1 lesson per year of age."

It was about 50 years ago that I passed my car test - I had two lessons, to obtain a driving school car to take the test in as none of the wrecks I had available would have kept running for the time needed to take the test!...

Righto. I have a 1.6l Diesel Ford Fiesta MK6 (2006).

Couple times now I've had the power steering give out, ABS, handbrake, speedo all flickering on and off. Battery is a bit low at 11.5v. When driving at the minute there's a sort of whining/squealing sound which you only hear at idle with revs or when driving.... Read more

Armed with a Haynes, multimeter and a socket set are there any good diagnostics I can do to narrow down the problem. There was a bit of oil to be seen just above the alternator; could it be oil making it slip?

11.5V open circuit is a dead battery. If that's running, it could be the battery or alternator....

Hello,

I have recently had my EGR valve removed and cleaned, when it was taken out if was rock solid with gunk and stuck shut and obviously had been for a long time.

He car has been well serviced over its life regular oil changes every 5000 miles etc, but for e last five or six years it had been used purely as a town car going 60 miles an hour for a max of 30 mins each trip once a week and 30 miles an hour everywhere else.

My question is, as honest John says the 1.9 and 1.5 dci, use ear valve to cool turbo, will it have caused damage or as it's an older model have I got of lightly?

Many thanks Read more

Well done for a very succinct description of the purpose of the EGR valve Railroad!

Are there any Dash Cams that actually do the job they are suppoosed to do and allow you to read a Number Plate of a car in the outside lane?... Read more

I currently drive a 12 year old Skoda TDI with 130PD engine which is approaching 120,000, to date the car has been reliable and is regularly serviced by independent VAG specialist, however I am not sure how long the car will remain reliable and start to cost money to run more than normal.

I like the way diesels drive with plenty of low down torque and the mpg which is easily obtainable (best 71mpg, average 49mpg).... Read more

The only website that carries full performance data that includes in-gear acceleration (30-50 in 3rd&4th, 50-70 etc) is AutoExpress - but only for cars that they have actually road-tested themselves. Autocar used to have all this data but they (stupidly, in my view) removed it all a couple of years back.

The problem you'll have is, the PD130 motor is a hard act to beat in terms of in-gear grunt and go, especially in a lighter car like your Skoda. ...

You need physically to release the device and pull it out far enough to see the serial number.

After that you can try us again and see if someone can give you the code!...

My employers have a Ford mini-bus I drive occasionally. The mileometer failed several years ago, and only the trip mileage is displayed. However, it always gets through the MOT without comment from the testing garage, no mileage being entered on the certificate. Is this legal? Should it be on the road at all?

I wouldn't worry about flat-spotting tyres. No doubt some are more prone, but providing they do not go completely flat, my experience over a decade of keeping cars in various locations (up to 10 months standing) is that flat spotting is just not an issue. CTEK battery chargers are great for keeping batteries topped up. Do check the model you purchase "resets" after a power failure (not all do)

Small capacity turbo petrol is the way to go until petrol-hybrids gets better range from the electric element. I recently had a Fiesta Ecoboost on hire for a weekend and the performance was outstanding (wheel-spin everywhere!!) as was the economy.
Diesel has had it, ever since the UN declared it a carcinogen, and the Govt under Blair went the wrong way with the promotion and incentives to buy diesel. You also get DPF and DMF issues later in life if you don't drive them over long distances, as well as a shagged CAT.
I'm shortly getting an 03 reg SAAB 9-5 estate 2 litre turbo with only 24K on the clock from a friend who's mother sadly has an illness and can no longer drive. My local SAAB specialist said it'll be bomb-proof and will go forever. In fact, weren't SAAB the first company to produce turbo-charged petrol engines in their 900 range years ago? Funny how what goes around, comes around!
