Our 62 plate Polo 1.2 TDi Match has recently had its emissions "fix" carried out by our local VW dealer after much pressure from the dealer and several letters from VW with the DVSA heading threatening possible MOT repercussions if it wasn't carried out.

The car, which was hardly a ball of fire to start with is now suffering from a substantial increase in turbo lag from a standing start which is making pulling out into traffic notably more difficult and dangerous.

In every other respect there's no notable difference but I feel there's no way VW didn't know this negative outcome would occur after all their testing and should at least be warning owners and even possibly compensating for the loss of performance from the origional package. I like the wee car but it was originally bought as a commuter and must be fit for quick exits into fast moving traffic daily.

I've heard of DSG equipped cars suffering, our dealer openly admitted this but has anyone else noticed a detrimental change in VAG diesels post emissions fix? Read more

No problems in 11 years, one day half the power dissapears. Everything in the car works perfectly, gears, electrics engine etc. but little power.
Tested the electrics, no odd noises or anything else.

I change the oil anually, and plugs every 3 years.

One mechanic said he though the transmition waas faulty, in 'safe mode', keeping it from functioning normally, but another mechanic said this was unlikely as there was no warning light. I checked the tranny fluid, it was at the right level and quite clean.... Read more

Well, there were quite a few muppets who said it was the gear box.

I don't really blame them, you'd have to be a Micra expert to know about this particular feature on this particular model....

I have noticed my engine light flashing on and off when I am driving? It loses power and judders? Bought the car in Sept and under warranty? Booked it into a dealer next week to find out what the problem is? Any answers thanks Read more

If this a Hyundai Getz (2002-2008 car) ... then stop. You do NOT want to take it into a Hyundai dealership. It is an older car, and they will only want to replace parts - virtually all main agent dealerships are not interested in fixing parts, but replacing parts.

Take it back to where you bought it from. Under the Consumer Rights Act, any fault that occurs within the first 6 months is assumed to have been 'present or developing' at the time of sale, and they are responsible for fixing it....

Dear all,

I've just bought a 63 plate honda cr-v with 19k miles. Tucked in the glove box was the multi-point check form.... Read more

But would a disk check measure to hundredths of a millimetre? Really? And how many points would be measured?

Hi all,

After picking up a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa yesterday, I've discovered a hissing noise coming from the top corner where the brake fluid reservoir is. It sounds like air escaping from somewhere however I can't seem to find where it's coming from.

After doing a bit of research I can't find much on the issue. The air conditioning system works fine along with the heater etc. It begins as the engine starts up and stops as soon as the engine is switched off. As I'm driving along, if I accelerate a bit harder then it will become a lot less noticeable and as soon as I ease off again it comes back. The same thing happens when I brake and as soon as I ease off the brakes, the sound comes back. The brake fluid, coolant and oil levels are all fine so I'm suspecting it may be a burst hose? The engine check light has come on as of today and luckily enough the garage that I got it from is willing to sort it out for me. Is it something I could fix myself though? The car drives fine.

Many thanks! Read more

Er - spraing flamable liquids / gas towards a running engine is potentially VERY dangerous indeed

Very good suggestion to remove the vacuum pipe from the brake servo and block the end to see if the noise goes away - which would show it''s a brake servo issue. As the noise comes from around the brake master cylinder something like this likely to be the issue. Check the condition of the vacuum pipe as well....

Hi , can anyone please give me some advice .

I have a budget of around £2000 - £3000 for a car and have been advised ( from the forum ) to avoid diesels in this price range .

Currently have a 2003 ford fusion 1.4 diesel which is on around 150k and the clutch as started to slip in the 2nd and 4th gears when going up hill .... Read more

Looks as though it might be cheaper to change your address than change your car!

So I took my car in as it had the DPF light on which they managed to fix for 80. While doing this they told me they thought my gearbox which has only 40k on had a bearing issue. I hadnt noticed any issues noise or problems getting in gear however it is automatic. This went on for a whole day with them offering to send my gearbox away to be fixed butr couldnt quote me. They said my car was not even safe to drive which I find strange as I drove 150 miles Sunday with the DPF light on. This is an independent garage who I use regularly. So I trust them but it seemed really odd and also the fact when I asked for a quote they said until they send it off they wont know.

Good morning,

An old thread but I can’t find the answer anywhere Is the 1.0 petrol engine in the Celerio a chain or belt? What is the recommended change interval if it’s a belt? Mileage and or age? Thanks

It’s chain driven, no belt change to worry about. Pretty bulletproof these wee engines as long as they get fresh good quality oil every year or 10,000 miles.

Can I put an auto box (perfect condition) from a 1995 Golf 3 1.6 petrol into a 2000 Golf 4 1.6 petrol whose auto box is knackered? Read more

Big John

A) Depends on the engine - The golf 3 had the old 1.6 8v (good engine) wheras the mk IV was available with a few very different 1.6 engines (old 8v, different polo derived 16v, and I think the fsi first appeared in th IV)

B) In the MK IV the electonic gearbox control systems will be very different - If I remember correctly the electronically controled auto gearbox was introduced with oil sealed for life (which is probably why it's knackered)

Heater fan stopped working. Read several forums. Replaced control module/resistor, checked fan works with a direct supply. Power to fan but fan still will not work when all connected up.

The small wires that go into the control module only show 5v no matter what the fan speed is set at on the dash control.... Read more

Additional question.

What should the voltage be at the two small wires going into the control module for the various fan speed settings? Either wire to earth or wire to wire. This may help.
