Hello everyone,
It is great that i got onto this forum and that i am a little closer to finding the answers i need. I won't lie, i did try to sign up to a golf forum but he said that my name was too offensive????? so that is out the window. Anyway i have a Golf Mark II and she is the love of my life. Don't get me wrong i have had to spend endless amounts of money on her to keep her going. then when i thought i had fixed all the problems she decided to seize. here is what happened. I drove to my friends house and parked outside like normal as most people would. The Golf felt a little laggy on the way there i must admit but nothing major. Then as i left my frineds house she just wouldn't start, this was depressing to say the least. Do you guys know where the problem can be located or what it might be?? or is this a whole engine rebuild/write off???... Read more
Looking for a cheap robust car to run for next 4 or so years. This era of rio seems a good bet. We previously had a very reliable picanto but a step up in power and size would be nice.
Very simple question, our annual mileage will be circa 15k possibly more would you take the diesel (bearing in mind it will be around 8 years old with probably 60 to 70k on the clock) or play it safe with the thirstier but less prone to major issues petrol?... Read more
congrats. I hope the car is problem free for you

Somewhere along the line I have misplaced my dipstick for Ford Mondeo 2.0 tdci (doh!).
I thought ok I will pick up a cheap one from a scrapyard. This is proving really hard. I can get a new one from ford for £22 + vat so I thought maybe £10 for a scrapper one. No luck from online scrapyard search engine, phoning direct or eBay breaking cars search. On phone a guy said they won't take one from a good engine which is ok but there must be some dead engines with useable dipstick? 1.8 tdci has loads which could be worrying if you have this engine. The only ones I could find were more expensive than a brand new one seems very odd?... Read more
S40 Man, did you say plastic dipstick ?
I would be really grateful for anyones help on this. To cut a long story short the car cut out, out of the blue after making a horrible noise - no warning lights etc. all the engine oil was dumped on the road and the engine bay. Was recovered to local main dealer who said the oil filter was loose by at least 1 1/2 turns and had ruined the engine. Nissan will not look at it as the car was 7k past its service schedule. Do oil filters just come loose with no warning or was it incorrectly fitted in the first place (nissan main dealer)? Read more
Interesting about oil filter differences.
M&H filters are usually suberb, but with the shape of the filter face only ended up with about two threads securing it to the Subaru so binned it, tried a K&N and it was a a perfrect fit, luckily ECP or someone had a half price offer on them so bought about 4....

I think with my budget reliability comes first and looks but if I can get a newer car on lower milage for the same price its certainly an option.
Hi all, I am new to this forum. I plan to buy a used hatch or saloon with max budget of 5K. I am looking for something that is very cheap to run(Fuel efficiency/Tax/insurance/Maintenance). This is for my personal use for weekend trips and occasional city rides in the evening, I think on an average 10000 miles a year. I had real bad experience with my previous car from a dealer which was my first car so I get worried.
So far I had seen Skoda Octavia, Mondeo, Insignia..They all have done over 70K miles and atleast 5 years old for the budget I am looking at also Audi A3 most of them over 90K miles and 8 years old. ... Read more
The Mazda 3 is a nice all rounder. Shares floorpan and suspension with the Ford Focus but uses bombproof Mazda petrol engines. The 1.6 is a bit lacking in torque but it's a free revving wee engine and has one of the nicest gearchanges on any car you'll find at any price.
I've got a 2005 1.6 with 117,000 miles I took as a part ex that I use as a runner and courtesy car. It's a great thing to hussle down a twisty B road and rarely gives any trouble thus the reason why so many older 3's are still on the road. Rust is your biggest enemy with these but it is usually cosmetic, particularly around wheelarches so keep it well polished to protect it. I sold this car to its last owner and know it's history. It's never needed anything other than wear and tear items such as tyres, brakes and an exhaust and drives no differently today as it did when I sold it to him nearly 8yrs ago.
Kia Cee'd is a cracking option too, especially if you can find one with a full dealer service history as you'll have the benefit of the remainder of the 7yr manufacturer warranty. Ignore salesmen telling you that the warranty is still valid if it has a non-dealer history. Technically it's true but try proving that it's been serviced in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, without every receipt for every part and a full checklist that matches dealer schedule you've no chance so you must regard the warranty as void without a full history.
Those of you old enough to remember the law used to be that a moped had to have pedals. Then various manufactures made "Mopeds" that would do 50+mph, aka the Fizzie & AP50 days. Then the law changed and they were limited to 30mph and no pedals.
Looking at the DVLA categories AM has max speed of 28mph and P, max speed of 31mph.... Read more
Just found this very enlightening page;
Hi all, purchased a 2011 Polo GTI for the wife in November. 40k on the clocks.
Within 6 weeks and 800 miles, the oil low light has appeared (was full on collection) which means it's used A litre of oil in that time. This spurred me on to research this and it seems it's a lot more common than I first though with these early GTI engines that came out in 2010. Tons of evidence out there of people having engine replacements under warranty, oil consumption tests, piston ring changes etc etc.
My polo has no record of any of this work being carried out by VW. It has 4 previous owners and the service book shows evidence of multiple oil changes close together before then being part exchanged.
Spoke to well known car supermarket who I purchased off and they said run for another 1000 miles and see if it happens again. That was the plan and then just a couple days ago the coolant has dropped a massive amount. They have advised top fluids up and get it back to them, which is my next step.
However the whole thing has got me quite worried about the car and I feel as if it's just a ticking time bomb to be honest. I've looked into rejecting the car but it seems I must give them one opportunity to repair the car before I have case for rejection.
Anyone any tips for me if possible? I'm not the best at this kind of legal stuff anyway but want make sure I go about it correctly.
Tried to email them with a list of faults etc but they just directed me to a form on the website you fill out and then they call you back so I have nothing in writing as it stands.
Should I make them aware that if the repair is unsuccessful I will be wanting to reject the car or stay quiet until the car is back? Read more
Apparently the chain is nothing to do wth the pump on these engines so they wouldn't do it when I asked.
Can't say i blame them, a timing chain is a lot more involved than a belt change.
Also if an engine needs a preventative timing chain change at 40k miles, the designers and makers should be publicly flogged then forced to refund every innocent victim (customer) of their utter imcompetence.
