Kia Rio 2005-11 - Rio 05-11 - 1.4 petrol or 1.5 diesel - Project C

Looking for a cheap robust car to run for next 4 or so years. This era of rio seems a good bet. We previously had a very reliable picanto but a step up in power and size would be nice.

Very simple question, our annual mileage will be circa 15k possibly more would you take the diesel (bearing in mind it will be around 8 years old with probably 60 to 70k on the clock) or play it safe with the thirstier but less prone to major issues petrol?

I believe the 1.5crdi is common rail and at our budget will be at that age where moden diesels may go wrong. Some advice from the experts much appreciated!

Not all Diesels go wrong its the ones which get neglected and/or with poor servicing or those with DPF's on short journeys which are at most risk, if the one you want doesn't have a DPF and has had an annual decent history of servicing then i'd be quite happy to go for the Diesel for your mileage.

Obviously research on HJ's good/bad sections and on single make forums would be time well spent.

Realistically there's about 10mpg of a difference between the two which wouldn't save enough to offset the higher risk of a much more complex diesel. Though there is a big performance advantage from the diesel in the midrange so it's certainly the better car for distance driving especially B road overtaking.

These aren't the best small cars on the road with regards to economy or driver appeal but they tend to be owned by older owners who do low mileages and are rarely abused so they do make good runabouts if cheap enough and I do mean cheap, they are next to worthless in the trade.

Buy a low mileage petrol car with a full history that's been owned longterm. They're very cheap anyway so a few hundred quid goes a long way.

Spotted an 07 plate with 45k on looks to have been well cared for, should see me 4 years or more even at that age

I'd be getting rid of a 59 plate corsa d with 28k on the clock, but my wife hates driving it so we can sell that and hopefully have a bit spare!

Wouldn't say it's gonna be a great improvement to drive if at all to be honest (they're cheap for a reason) but it should be reliable, just don't overpay for it.

I wouldn't really recommend getting rid of one cheap car that you know is reliable and swapping it for another you don't know. The Corsa will also be better on fuel so it's unlikely you'll save any money here in the longterm assuming the Corsa has been reliable and has been properly maintained. Link the advert if you want, let us have a wee look, it often tells a story.

Here is one like the one I saw. I'm aware these kias are not thrilling to drive but my wife struggles with the 1.0 corsa so I'd rather have something nippier that were both happy enough to drive :)

A 1.0 is proving to be a no no on the roads of devon

Looks tidy enough but it's at least £500 overpriced. Here's another from a dealer with similar mileage and full history at the right money to compare. Auto Trader #DrivenByMe

Also a low mileage diesel for less money too. Auto Trader #DrivenByMe

The dealer will have paid no more than £800- £1,000 for the car so it's not good value at that price.

Take a test drive first. They're not what you could describe as nippy unless you go for the diesel. Though I get the the reason for wanting out of a 1.0 Corsa, It's the worst in the range, gutless and notorious for timing chain problems if oil changes aren't adhered to perfectly.

If funds allow I'd spend more not less and buy something both of you will enjoy driving and save yourself money in the long run via not having to change again shortly after and through lower depreciation on a more desirable car such as a Mk VI Fiesta or a Suzuki Swift. Both are much more enjoyable to drive, both will depreciate more slowly and they'll also use less fuel.

I'm not surprised your wife wants out of that Corsa, in my previous work i often picked up lorryloads of ex BSM Corsas at defleet time, many of those were that horrid 3 cyl version, the only way they would climb the transporter deck is with a run up, the most gutless awful car it's been my displeasure to sit it, the only other cars capable of such utter disappointment for the same reason were the mk4 Escort 1.4 lean burn and much too recently Fiat 500's with the automated manual gearbox from hell.

You meaning the Mk V from 1990? It was a horrible thing. I remember being amazed how bad these were compared to rivals when I first started out as a trainee salesman and was encouraged to drive everything to get to know what I was selling. Rover R8 and Pug 306 were from another world by comparison.

That miserable lean burn lump was in thousands of renters, and i was shifting renters by the thousand at the time, the next batches were 1.8 engined and superb cars in comparison, as was the 2.0 litre R8 in standard Sli spec, quite a wolf pup in sheep's clothing with only the slight bonnet bulge giving the game away.

Some of our best general purpose cars came from that era in my humble.

405, Cavalier, first Mondeo, Accord, Primera (which was a worthy successor to Bluebird) Golf 1 and 2 and Passat to mention just a few more.

Agree totally. The 205/306/405 were great things as were the Mk I Mondeo and Primera. Driver enjoyment took a front seat over safety and fuel economy.

The T16 2.0 R8 was a discreet flying machine, especially the rare 220/420 turbo but two best in the range in my opinion were the sweet revving Honda engined 1600 and the tough economical PSA 1800 turbo diesel. The T16 was a bit too much for the front wheels.

The 05 - 11 Rio had a great reputation amongst owners and many on Kia forum were devastated when it was replaced with the newer more stylish model which in truth was way less practical (and slower/less economical). All cars made after mid summer 2010 will be fitted with DPF's, they had to be otherwise they would not have been possible to put a new one on the road when Euro 5 became law on 01 Jan 2011.

But its an old car now and they were not as well made as current Kia's. Get a low mileage well looked after one and it may prove to be a good buy but at 7 years old or more its going to be down to luck, just like buying any 7 year old car.

As for Kia petrols they are not the best engines in the world for economy, refinement or speed. Old school design so reliable but not very efficient. Definitely try one on the type of roads you normally drive on before buying otherwise you may be disapointed.

Kia Ceed Diesels are in budget, if you have a look at those for sale some with serious mileages are still fine looking cars, up to 2009 no DPF and no DMF either.

It might be a case of being worth travelling for the right car, maybe enlist the help of knowledgeable fiends in other areas to check potentials out for you.

I honestly don't think you would get a decent Ceed diesel for your budget.

up to 2009 no DPF and no DMF either.

DPF's were not fitted to 1.6 CRDi Ceeds until the 2011 model years car which came into the country from September 2010 onwards. Our ceed CRDi 1.6 was the first our dealer delivered with a DPF fitted and we took delivery in late September 2010.

The rare and unpopular CRDi 2 litre had a DPF from day one and was also fitted with a DMF. They were not economical or refined (old school Sportage engine) so are best avoided even if they are cheap.

I have a 2007 Rio 1.5 diesel, owned from new, 77k, and nearly 10 years now! Purchased following HJ's sparkling review. They are indeed good cars and I still enjoy driving mine, even after all these years. Possibly because the Rio is not my only transport - I own many bicycles and a motorcycle (even older - 1999 'T' reg).

Pros: Good performance from 110bhp engine, relaxed cruising 2,000 rpm/60mph and never less than 50mpg, good supportive front seats as well. Full size spare wheel. Still on the original exhaust and battery! Common Rail Diesel engine is reliable - has a timing chain, no DPF or DMF to go wrong!! Headlamp bulbs easy to replace - I think this is an important feature. Can be parked up without fear of vandalism etc - this really is an anonymous car. Easy to fit a bicycle in with front wheel removed.

Cons: Definitely not a 'drivers' car, wallows when pushed in the bends and <probably> has too much performance for the chassis. Parts can be expensive and my car is looking rusty underneath. Gearbox a bit 'notchy'. Air-con packed up at 4-years old - I never bothered getting it fixed. Rear brakes prone to siezing up and a normal maintenance issue on an older car methinks. Highish VED as just over limit at 121 co2 emmission rate. I think on the 08 Rio the VED is lower? Something to check if buying!

I sometimes ponder on which 'modern' circa 4000mm long hatchback might be a suitable eventual replacement for the Rio, certainly not the latest Rio which looks to be a small/cramped design. Perhaps, in the following order, a Dacia Sandero 0.9 / Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.2/ Seat Leon 1.2 ? Petrol would be my engine choice as modern diesels are too risky given my mileage.

Hi everyone I'm new to HJ forum and came across this thread on the KIA Reo.

I bought a 2006 diesel Rio 1.5 yesterday to teach my son to drive in, have to say that the car is really good value for the price. Normally, I will buy a car needing work and tidy it up but this time went for a clean car with reasonable miles 80K on the clock.

The performance impressed me rihgt away, plenty of torque and quiet running engine..comfy seats and plenty of room for passengers..Did notice the ride was a bit hard maybe some decent shockers will help.

Spent a week looking for a small car under £1500 and apart from the Astra's, Ford Focus and Fiat's nothing for the money could hold a candle to the Rio IMO.

No cambelt 16 v DOHC engine ecomical and about a tenner a month road tax couldn't ask for more really. Oil and filter change today ( if it stops raining ) always use the cheap semi synthetic oil from my local parts place and change all our cars at 6k miles religiously despite what they say in the manuals..

Yep the Fiesta is Brtains most popular car - eat poo 10 billion flies can't be wrong!

Cheers..

"use the cheap semi synthetic oil from my local parts place"

which is perfect if its the correct Kia spec. If its not you risk problems with both the engine and emissions kit.

Get the correct stuff, for a Kia of this age it will be at most only a few pence extra.

The handbook recommends ACEA B4 or above. Kia state that various SAE grades can be used including 10-30 and 15-40. Just get the right spec.

Since I posted upthread my Rio has thrown a front ABS sensor, handbrake pads failed, rear calipers binding (again!), needed new rear discs and pads and a n/s drop-link. My local Indy put it right and the Rio is continuing to provice sterling service.

Still think these are good cars!

My Mother in law has an '06 rio 1.4 petrol. She has owned it since new, got it during the scrappage scheme. As far as i am aware nothing at all has ever gone wrong with it. Gets serviced at MOT time evey year and thats it.

I had a 2010 Rio 2 1.4 petrol for 3 and a half years/22000 miles, totally reliable, reasonable economy and insurance costs. Did what it should, couldn't fault it for the price.

I had a Kia rio 1.5l crdi for 7 years. at the time people said 'you brought what ?' but these days Kia is a well known name.

Brought brand new on a 09 plate and I didn't have any issues with the car over 80,000 miles

Only one issue right after I brought it was that the rear boot started rusting but Kia fixed this within a week and Kia couldn't have been more helpfull. Brilliant customer support.

I brought the car for the 20 miles to and from work commute every day.

One of the quickest car's I have ever owned (not the fastest but the quickest). 30 - 50 mph was a measured two seconds. very nice and reassuring to join traffic with. overtaking traffic was effortless. a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing car if driven correctly and the right revs used to get the most out of the car.

Over the time of ownership, I had to replace the whole set of tyres twice and one light bulb.

The downsides were that it didn't handle well but did get better after replacing the original Hankook tyres.

However, bear in mind that the age of the Rio that you are looking at. Kia were known to be cheap cars (not so now). By that I mean that the replacement consumables (like tyres) tend to be better than what originally came with the car.

Oh and windscreens, The design and angle of the wind screen means stone chips take their toll.

In my time with the car I had three windscreen replacements.

I got rid of the car because the brake pads were low and it needed a major service. Plus I had a couple of times where I started the engine and the chain cam was noisy as hell but settled down once oil pressure had built up. so at some point it would have needed a new chain cam.

The kia rio in 1 spec can be frustrating to own as it lacks central locking, but for the money these cars are a bargain.
