My grandson, who is new driver, was behind a 10reg mini the other day. The mini braked suddenly to avoid a dog in the road and my grandson hit him in the rear. The dogs owner quickly gathered up his dog and put in his car and left the scene. The owner of the mini is now trying to privately claim £700 from my grandson. I maintain that the dog's is responsible. What is the law in cases like this? Read more
"If the dog had not run into the road because it was on a lead, would an accident have occurred in this case?"
Probably not, but the uncontrolled dog is not the immediate cause of the accident....
I've got a 2015 ecoboost.
Whenever the car is cold during the first mile or so, the car feels jerky i.e. feels as if petrol is not getting through. As soon as it clears the car performs fine.... Read more
Has the fuel filter ever been changed ?
I'd get a passenger to take a decent quality video of it, and the problem, as presented in the mornings. Then take that in, and ask them why they couldn't detect it....

As I said in my resposne, check the HJ reviews.
This isn't fully evaluated, since I don't generally do cosmetic repairs. I feel that holes are natures way of improving ventilation and drainage, but I had some aluminium foil and sunflower oil left over so I crumpled it into a hole in my sill and burnished it down by rubbing with the rounded end of my T-bar. Took about 3 minutes.

Reminds me of the 70`s bodges, but what was the oil for? it would have been more use for cooking or lubricating.
Retro-cool then?...
My home-made-from-garden-hose radiator hose has done a few hundred K without any sign of failure, but had a slight leak under pressure where it joins the radiator, perhaps because its a little too wide, and or isn't as soft/compliant as the real thing.

Some good points above, though also some apparent confusion. Just to repeat, I've replaced my coolant and radiator hose.
The issue was whether I should offer the old coolant (and the bit of fresh I have left over) to another teacher with a leaky system in her Skoda, on the basis that it would be better than water....
What's the legal situation, in the UK only, if replacement tyres have lower speed ratings than original?
My car has a quoted top speed of 140mph and the OE tyres are W-rated, good for 168 mph - can I legally fit H-rated tyres, good for 130mph - as I generally observe the UK 70mph limit and don't go abroad.... Read more
Thanks DVD, your input is always appreciated - even more so while you're recovering from your "little episode", I hope all is going well for you.
This was posted by HJ this morning in a rather off motoring topic answer in his weekly motoring Q&A and I thought it was a brilliant idea.
The fact is that the UK needs at least 1,000,000 new homes and the 8 major developers are holding back developing sites for which they have planning permission in order to increase the prices. Standard supply and demand. Sajid Javid says he's going to so something about it but actually the solution is for the Government to create 'The Housing Bank'. Very simply, anyone with money languishing at 0% in a bank account (while the bankers gamble with it) voluntarily withdraws their money and invests it in 'The Housing Bank' that guarantees a 2.5%pa return for 10 years. The Housing Bank then uses that money to build affordable homes on the many available patches of Government land, preferably those adjacent to facilities such as schools and hospitals. The dispossessed who can't afford to buy any kind of property then get £85,000 - £120,000 houses on a 3% mortgage. The catch is that the houses are price controlled so their values cannot rise by more than 2.5% a year. Attempting to control developers hasn't worked and never will. Competing against them and beating them at their own game could work, to the benefit of everyone, particularly the 20 - 40 year olds living in bedsits or with their parents. Not 'Council Houses'. Not 'Housing Association' houses. These will be covenanted freehold or leasehold basic affordable homes. The other huge benefit, of course, will be to lift Britain out of its extremely dubious property price based economy. Read more
I doubt any of the holes are as big as Osborne's terrible 'help-to-buy' scheme - a policy that has done nothing but increase the debt burden even further, and for those with limited cash to begin with, buying houses in limited supply at inflated prices.
Anything that can accelerate affordable home buying has to be encouraged. This government has been utterly ineffective in this regard
Pay for them to be removed to a safe place of "storage"...
I am sure you can legally find out who the owners are, advise them that the cars need to be removed in xxx days and then just do that.... Read more
The police have powers to remove any vehicle from any land.
But not the resources.
Yesterday my wife's '64 plate CR-V suddenly went into a limp mode which would not let it go faster than 20mph.
The engine revved ok in 1st gear but when I put into 2nd it wouldn't go past 20mph (approx 2000rpm). I tried 3rd gear but it would still not go past 20mph.... Read more
