I purchased BMW 320i 2006 47k mileage end of June this year, then the engine light started flashing after 3 weeks, returned it back to the garage (3 months warranty) after 4-5 weeks. tried to fix it. the verdict is the car will need a reconditioned engine. it has been more than 130 days and still I have not had my car back (had a courtesy car during this time). I was offered a reconditioned engine plus one-year silver warranty with RAC.

How can I make sure that the reconditioned engine is good ? and Is this a good deal ? what are my options if they did not fix the car on time (mid december) (I have been promised many times I will get the car fixed next week but never happened) ?

Thank you.

If the recon engine comes with a warranty, then that is all the 'proof' you're ever going to get that the engine is good.

I'd suggest you accept the offer, and tell them to get on with it. Talk to them, agree a timescale by which you will have your car back. Agree as to what happens if the car is not ready by that time....

i have a ford focus 1.8tdci 2007 it has recently started to make a droning noise at the front which is louder than the engine. It is speed related and doesn't really start until about 25 mph, when i dip the clutch the noise continues, i have no problems with gear changing and no problems with the car generally except for the noise.

So far i have changed both bearings, both drive shafts and cv joints it has had new wishbones, but i still have the noise. It has to be some sort of drive problem as it doesn't do it on tick over. Stumped Read more

Help. My a class developed a misfire and hesitation about two weeks ago. After abit of research a common known fault is the throttle body. Ive had that cleaned out and the sparkplugs checked. when I drove home from having this done initially the fault was still there but after a few miles it run perfectly. I stopped at the shop and when I started up again the fault had returned. Ive got not warning lights up on dash. Any ideas?? Read more

I like the C1/107/Aygo with a manual box but the previous gen automated manual was pretty clumsy, think the new one uses an updated version of the same but no idea how good it is.
The i10 is a great little car but it'll struggle when it comes to resale particularly as an auto. Great warranty and very reliable though, a good used buy.

I like the UP too, it looks great but I've no idea what the auto's like. The Fiesta is another brilliant car but the 1.6 auto is thirsty for a supermini and the 1.0 3cyl turbo that replaced it is developing a nasty reputation for engine problems. Hasty redesign in 2014 is supposed to cure it but still doubts linger and Ford have a terrible reputation for offering goodwill out with the warranty period.

Not a fan of the Corsa. Previous generations have been nowhere near competitive regarding driver enjoyment or quality but again haven't driven the latest model so must be worth looking at.

The Swift is a nice wee car again but due replacement shortly and the 1.2 petrol lacks pace with an autobox. Great fun on a twisty road though.

To be honest, with your budget you're spoiled for choice. Best for reliability will be Japanese/Korean stuff but remember small city cars like the i10 are hard work to sell on with an autobox and next to worthless with high mileage. The size up superminis like the Fiesta aren't much better in this regard. The kind of owner who usually buys them is older, retired and a low mileage user and they're scared off by above average mileages. I'd be inclined to buy a cheap used i10 and run it til it drops. It'll be the most cost effective, it's the best budget option.

This car could be 20 years old and could have a string of faults on the abs system associated with old age.

This change, particularly the increase for vehicles over 1400cc, reflects an attempt to align with current vehicle operating costs. For tech recruiting companies, this can translate into more accurate compensation for employees using private cars for business purposes or a fairer cost assessment for those using company cars for private travel. It's a strategic financial update that companies need to incorporate into their expense management systems. It ensures compliance and fairness in employee reimbursement, which is critical for maintaining morale and trust within the organization. Furthermore, these updated rates can influence decisions around company car policies and choices, nudging businesses towards more efficient vehicle options. For instance, unchanged rates for smaller engine sizes and hybrid vehicles may encourage a shift towards more environmentally friendly and cost-effective transport options. This move not only aligns with broader environmental goals but can also positively impact the company's public image, especially in the tech industry, where innovation and sustainability are often key values. Metropolis.

Trying to work out which of these is the better option. It's the Thai market but these models are pretty standard worldwide from what I can gather. Will be buying new to replace a Toyota Vios. Generally will be driven in and around Bangkok on the commute with the occasional long drive across Thailand. Which of these two would you choose and why? Is one better built than the other? Will probably keep it a few years. It will have to be an auto. Thanks in advance! Read more

My wife's got a Mazda 2 with the 1.3 in TS2 trim.

it's a good little car for driving in and around the city but I find it lacking (obviously) on the motorway. It's an 09 plate and she's had it for 4 years. It's only done around 25k in those 4 years but nothing has been needed with it besides servicing. Around the city it returns around 36-40mpg which is decent. Like my 2 Mazda petrols before, it uses no oil in between it's annual service...
