Jaguar XF 2.2d 2012 - Looking at a used Jag - Solitas

Hi all,

I'm looking to move on form my C220 and onto a larger family saloon. The Jag XF has caught my eye after originally pining after a 5 series, probably mostly down to the looks!

I've been looking at this particular one, but I'm a little wary on the mileage - http://used.jaguar.co.uk/search#/details/2731230

Another, lesser spec but lower mileage - http://used.jaguar.co.uk/search#/details/2725611

I am a sucker for better spec'd cars and trying to justify it against the price/age/mileage. What are your thoughts on either?

Thank you.

From a resale point of view you'd lose less money with the lower mileage car. Gadgets don't add value to used cars beyond the first couple of years.

I'm assuming you do enough mileage to warrant a DPF equipped diesel?

About 12-13k a year, half city half motorway. Never had an issue in the past with my Merc.

Resale value isn't that much of an issue as I intend to keep it for a while, its more that I don't want to overpay ... which of course is a very subjective thing! And I just need to ensure that bits and bobs won't start failing on me as certain mileages are reached.

Should have started in the original post: The first car had one owner aside from the dealer so assuming those are motorway miles.

Please don't buy a 2.2 diesel without looking at the car by car in HJ

Find a 3.0 litre and go for the higher output one.. and at least congratulations on buying an approved one at least.

The jaguar warranty is worth it, but make sure you get a condition report before buying and make sure the tolerances on the brake discs are ok. if too close you'll find yourself forking out a fortune shortly.

Careful with egr valve and maf sensor and make sure the service history is perfect too. budget £600 ish for a set of half decent tyres, rear ones don't do mega miles.

I was looking at XE or XF recently, but new or nearly new. The XE is (shall we say) a bit compact. I will probably go for the 3.0l xf ... but petrol. (9-10.000 a year)

Just got to get management permission now...

When buying a complex luxury car like this my focus would be on mileage, history and a good approved used warranty over value for money. The cheaper car here will be the most costly overall factoring resale even though you say that's not important to yourself it is a factor when considering value.

With this sort of car beg borrow or steal to buy the best you can afford upfront. It's much cheaper than fixing it later. I'd spend a few thousand more and get a low mileage car if budget permits.

Good point raised by oldroverboy regarding the 3.0 6cyl model, it's a much smoother and more muscular engine in both outputs and transforms the feel of the car from exec saloon to luxury express, though the 2.2 190 is no slouch there's no hiding the 4cyl diesel grumble. The 2.2 is likely to hold its value better later on though.

You should be ok with the DPF if you're doing enough distance mileage and I'm assuming your C Class has a DPF also? If you've had no bother it's likely you'll be fine with the XF.

Another suggestion. Don't buy something like this unless you're prepared to fork out for main dealer servicing and repairs or you have a very good genuine specialist nearby, be wary of small backstreet workshops who advertise themselves as such under false pretences. I was stung by a so called BMW specialist who ruined a 318 I had many years back by using the wrong oil. This is not a vehicle you can maintain on the cheap.

Agreed. I bought an XF (3L petrol) in 2013. Use main dealer servicing if at all possible.

Alos I'd be wary of a 70k diesel that is on a '12 plate; the Jag approved warranty does last 2 years apparently but there's also a limitation that it applies to cars upto 5 yrs old.

So you wouldn't want to be in the position of only having a years' warranty.

Note that not all of the Approved Used scheme cars will have a pukka service history. I looked at one and it has only been serviced twice in ~45k miles, whereas it's should have been serviced every 10k , so I walked.

I bought the lowest mileage, newest one I could afford, even if it wasn't of the highest spec.

I was also advised that if I wore denim jeans a lot (which I do) then I should avoid the light leather as it marks easily.

Once you find one, ask the explict questions :

- does the warranty cover the failure of a given doors' central locking system, and

- does the warrranty cover the failure of the gearshift selector (either it fails to rise or descend or locks into one position and can't be moved).

as well as the question regarding turbo failure (mine's normally aspirated so my money goes on VED & fuel instead).

Also it should be eligible for the fixed price services at main dealers for cars aged 3 yrs & older,so for me thats c. £250/year.

Hope that helps ??

regards,

Stuart
