I'm after some advice.

I purchased a BMW 520d 2012 registered done 44,000 miles on July 3rd 2016 with a 3 month warranty.... Read more

Hi, Concrete thanks for the info. The 3 month warranty came as standard there were options for extending the warranty but as gordon bennett mentions wasn't waorth it's weight in s***. An aside I don't get why warranty companies like them are allowed to exist. I get people need to make money but in my opinion you either cover everyything ot nothing, not cherry pick the most economical policy for your business.

PD, thanks again. Would I be correct in thinknig the onus isn't on me but the seller to prove the fault wasn't present before hand. You are quite correct around the seller may be completely reasonable which in my eyes would be 50/50 at least with me covering the clutch cost as technically it's not broken. I've left speaking to them until Monday so I can ensure everything is corteous....

With the current low value of scrap comes the possibility of obtaining a running and Mot'd car for next to nothing. But how low can you go regarding cheap cars?

I've a wee hobby that involves buying a cheap car, running it for 6mths to a year and seeing just how cheaply it can be done. Admittedly it's a 3rd car so we're not overly reliant on it but I do use them to commute to work, trips to the dump and for vitally important trips down the pub where I'd rather abandon a heap than one of our more valuable motors for the night. I maintain them and regularly check them to ensure safety but accept minor faults as part of the fun and accept that any major faults will lead to the scrappy.

I've managed in recent years to run a 52 plate Astra 1.6SXi bought for £1,000, spent £300 on repairs and a service then sold for £1,100 a year later. Loss £200 for the year.

Mitsubishi Carisma 1.9 DID bought for £700, spent around £400 over the year and sold for £1,000. Loss £100.

Peugeot 306 bought for £500, £350 on new clutch and a service and sold for £750 after 10mths. Loss £100.

Currently I've an X plated Ford Cougar, bought for £300 and in great order but a bit greedy that passed an Mot needing just a set of pads and today I'm picking up an 05 Mazda 3 I got for nothing with 11mths mot.

Motoring can be done on a tiny budget assuming you've a little mechanical know how and not a care about style. Once a car becomes unfashionable they're next to worthless. Anyone else keen on this ultra cheap motoring on a shoestring? Read more

Hi please can someone help.

My partner a lovely 2008 VW Bettle convertible.. This morning on activation of the key fob to unlock the doors, the drivers door unlocked fine with the window dropping slightly. However the passenger door does not.. The window drops slightly then goes up. You can unlock it from the inside no problems.. However on locking the car again and then unlocking with the fob same problem again passenger door stays locked.

Any ideas ?

Thanks everyone Read more

Ah the problem being is wasn't set to this.. Then suddenly went to this phase of unlocking?

There was a reference in Saturdays column of a new car jumping out of reverse.
It reminded me of a problem with a Morris 1100 some years ago.
We had just bought the car and my wife took it to go shopping. When she returned she was quite distressed as she had great trouble reversing it our of a parking space. It kept jumping out of reverse. I tried it and it worked perfectly no jumping out at all. So she got back in and demonstrated, and sure enough it jumped out of gear.
The problem was she sat with the seat further forward, and bringing the gear stick into reverse, pushed in the foam of the seat, needless to say the foam pushed back and the gear stick kept jumping into Neutral.

EGR and VW.

I have a 2013 VW Touran 1.6TDI. The EGR valve needs replacing at 22K miles, total cost approx £1400. The cost of the parts has been paid for by VW + 50% of the 7hrs labour. My contribution is to be £483 (including £96 diagnostic - refundable if they carry out the replacement). As this appears to be a known fault (see all the reports on various sites on the internet) should it have been rectified by VW for free. I felt I had to agree to the cost as the car is off the road and does not run correctly.

Have asked the service team about the costs and problem but the man I spoke to knows nothing about the valve, the problems with it, or any comment on the internet as he doesn't read forums. Would have thought Inchcape would be aware and kept staff appraised.

After a lot of pushing, got a 30% reduction of the labour but still unhappy that I have to pay at all. Finally, was informed that a) I should stop using City diesel from Morrisons - very dirty & high bio content (good for planet, not for VW) b) try to incorporate motorway driving to keep DPF and EGR valves clear.

Tempted to have it chipped.

Obviously prices can vary but would appreciate some rough idea. 2007 Volvo C30 metallic grey. Some minor scratches.

Wondering about 'refreshing' bodywork. In East Yorkshire - any ideas of rough cost to have all car machine polished. Obviously I will ask for some quotes but would like to have some idea of what would be reasonable. Read more

Really only concerned about one scratch approx 2 feet long. Trusted garage recommended someone. Twenty pounds to polish out scratch - thought everywhere else fine and carry on with my autoglym !

Being a (hands up, guilty as charged) life-long, olympic gold winning pedant, I have a personal loathing of the generic term "people carrier", which is a clumsy tautology compared with individual model designations like "+2" and "Grand".
"Multi purpose vehicle" IMHO misses the mark, too. "Able to transport people and/or luggage": Barring two-seaters, wowee, show me a car that doesn't do that! In Spain a legal quirk provides the category "Mixto" ("combination") for large vans and some cars like the Chrysler Voyager, which can be registered for the first four years as a "trade" vehicle (lower VAT and lower top speed, but six monthly MoT tests), regardless of numbers of seats or actual usage, and then re-classified. But I digress...
If it were possible to wind the clock back to the day before the first of these daringly different designs was actually launched before a gobsmacked motoring public, I'd humbly offer the alternative of "seven-seater" as a generic term. Maybe "three-row" in second place.
Any other suggestions out there? Read more

A lot of that terminology predates the motor car. Both shooting brakes and cabriolets were horse drawn vehicles.

My older Scottish relatives still, refer to the limos used to accompany funerals as Broughams which again is a type of horse drawn carriage originally..

As to people, caririers, how about three row charabancs?
