I'm about to pick up a new Mazda 3 tomorrow. I ended up working with 2 dealers and eventually securing a pretty large discount off list price. Anyway, at the time of agreeing the deal and paying deposit the dealer added paint protection (£400) and gap insurance (£400) to the invoice. He said (after giving me the sales pitch), "dont worry, we can take them off when you pick up if you don't want them" I was a little suspicious and insisted on adding a ? Next to them, which I think went through the carbon copy but I can't remember for sure.

Trouble is I'm paranoid now that the dealer will try and force it through perhaps by claiming he thought I wanted it and the car has already been treated, and of course it can't be untreated... Hopefully he was just doing it to try to get me more likely to agree, and perhaps meet end of August sales targets (it was late August when I paid the deposit). Trouble is I don't trust him because he lied to me initially about the first discounted price that he offered, spinning some story about Mazda giving them a special deal so they could grow as a dealer in the area, when I know full well its just because Mazda have excess 2016 Mazda 3s they need to shift ahead of the imminent 2017 Mazda 3 launch.... TL:DR yep, I was paranoid. everything was fine, didn't pay for any extras

OK, so I showed up to collect the car and it's sat out front. Introduced to staff member Ben who presumably deals with finalising paperwork / sales, my sales guy (Ian) is there and we say hello and have a quick small talk chat but then he disappears to his office....

As we are no longer keeping any livestock, we are selling our trusty, reliable 1998 Isuzu Trooper. It has just got a yr's MOT and has been a wonderful workhorse to us. Needless to say, the moment we've decided to sell it, the starter motor has started to act up. My husband thinks we should probably put a new one on, but reading all the info leads me to suppose it's a s*** job. I'm inclined to ask less and let someone else put a new starter motor on it. My husband thinks if the starter motor spins before it starts, no one buy it. Looking at other ads for Troopers (a brilliant tow car) we are not asking an excessive price and would knock £150 for the start motor.

Any thoughts v much appreciated. Read more

Thank you my little star, for that. Just sort of info I needed. Husband now out with WD40 and rubber mallet merely because the starter motor is so inaccessible. If we were still towing horses/sheep/cows et al, we'd do it without thinking about it. Well, we'd probably think about and maybe swear - but it'd get done. Yes, of course, it's solenoid, defo losing my touch mechanically but equally unreachable I fear. Well, it's either multiple swear words or we'll get away with it. It is a fabulous car for the price, judging by all other Isuzu Trooper ads. Anyway once again many thanks.

I need to carry a lot of stuff from one country to another in the back of my Rapid with the back seats flattened and the space filled to the roof lining.

And I know this is very dangerous if I hit someone or something or even brake sharply. I have thought about this safety aspect a lot and may get some scaffolders in to make a cage, (Joke) I've looked for commercially available cages. Maybe my wife could do the journey kneeling in her seat and holding everything in place. (partly a joke)... Read more

Dash Cam footage captures the horrifying moment a bus driver on a school run ploughs into a womans car after running a red light. The bus driver has avoided a driving ban after causing a crash by driving through a red traffic light. 21-year-old Philip Onions was fined £147 and ordered to pay £85 costs. He had more than 20 pupils on board at the time.... Typical Mail reporting using words like shocking, ploughed and smashed yet managing to omit key facts like how/why light was run.

Although the prosecution said it was borderline dangerous driving the charge was due care and attention. That almost certainly tells us it was not a deliberate act. Kids on the bus were messing with the bell. Distraction and/or looked but didn't see or something around sightlines or 'reading though' to next traffic light? ...

Further to my previous message on this forum about scraping/denting my car's back passenger door and wing, I was wondering whether anyone could give me a recommendation for a car repair shop that does good work at reasonable prices. I don't mind traveling out a bit to get good results. Read more

Hello,

I'm having starting issues with my 2002/3 Hyundai Getz 1.3i, it won't start when the key is turned, the only way to start it is by push starting it.

I've measured the battery and it reports 12.4v volts and I can hear the relay clicking.

I'm trying to find the starter motor to investigate that but I can't locate it. I've seen the diagram in the service manual of where it's supposed to be but can't locate it on my car. Does anyone have any advice on where it is located / a picture of it in place?

Also any ideas of what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated!

Car Dealers in Basingstoke owned by City Motorholdings have gone overnight or so it feels. From what I can see Peugeot, Skoda, Seat, Ford, Honda and Suzuki just closed. There are more but it's such a mess no one seems to be sure who is left. Loads of jobs gone, local paper quotes trading difficulties. Also a largish Ford indie went the other week too. I suppose other parties may move in.
One customer went to collect a serviced car which was still on the ramp and there was only a security guy there who didn't know how to get it off.

Hi,

I bought a very nice and tidy Audi A3 four months ago from a dealer in Essex. It had only done 82,000 miles which was nice and low for the year and it was obviously well cared for. For peice of mind I asked for and payed extra to have a new cambelt done and full service carried out.... Read more

Loads of belts fail early John in fact it was so common on Alfa Twin Sparks and Renault 1.5 DCi’s (to name just two) that they had to cut the intervals. Don’t scrimp on maintenance. The belt isn’t the main factor in any failure (though you cannot fully assess its condition just by looking at it in place) it’s the tensioner or tensioners and often the water pump pulley depending on design which fail and throw the belt.

The problem here is that a dodgy dealer has done the job on the cheap without using the appropriate quality parts, technical knowledge and probably has scrimped by changing nothing more than the belt itself initially.

If you buy a car from a non-franchise dealer that is due or overdue a belt change then negotiate a discount with this in mind (don’t expect the full cost off) then book it in with your nearest main dealer or genuine specialist to be done properly. VW for example offer a 5yr guarantee on belt changes done by their dealers using VW parts and it cost me only £30 more than a local backstreet garage quoted using non-VW parts when I had it done on my Polo last year.
