Reading this crane fire all I could think was, what the hell was a 96 ton crane doing on a motorway!?

Surely that must have been a mobile roadblock before it even caught fire!

How else do you move a crane long distances? The number of routes permitting high, wide and very heavy loads are extremely limited.

I've never had a problem overtaking them.

I've seen plenty of middle aged, not interested in driving types, dawdling along in the centre lane for miles at speeds lower than mobiles cranes do on motorways.

There is too much HGV bashing which is unfounded. Yes some are driven poorly by people who should have chosen a different career path but, some of us try our best to be considerate and professional at all times.

The same as everyone else on the motorway...going from A to B

That's a small "exceptional load" - this was 640 tonnes doing 4mph on the M4 www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2508878/Biggest-l...l

Hmm ok. So a 20mph wall of metal on a motorway is a sensible idea? No wonder our motorways are choked.

Ordinary HGVs don't cause a problem, this isn't an ordinary hgv

Big loads are there for a specific purpose - that purpose can't be eliminated so they have to go somewhere - they're safer on motorways and cause less congestion.

Can you imagine the congestion of these big loads on ordinary 2-lane roads, closing it while they pass through and having to go through the lanes to bypass low bridges and sharp bends.

Our motorways being choked is caused by a combination of too high a population, too many people commuting long distance to work by car and too much goods traffic that should be on the railways - but they're congested too so just put it down to too many people on a small island.

I would hope drivers could see it in plenty of time to pass it safely ! As others have said it is the safest way.

All I could think of was why were the police so incompetent and ludicrously cautious in not allowing 'trapped motorists for several hours' to get by. But it seems par for the course to close a motorway for five years after every fatal accident or a small fire. 'ooohhh, it's a crime scene, guv.....we need to hunt for clues for three days....'.

Like many others, I drove past it and ignored it till i read about it in the paper, but there were people taking photos, said swmbo who was watching the cars slowing to get a better look.

How should it get about then?
