First of all I must confess to having been an Office Representative for what was then TASS, the union for Technical and Supervisory Staff.

I also confess to having taken part in a two week strike in the 1970s and in the negotiations with Management that settled the dispute; a favourable outcome for us, in getting more annual holidays and shorter hours. This was in the private sector, so the only effect was on the company's short-term profits.... Read more

So much for unions - A waste of your money brothers!

That's what happens when the wrong people get elected as stewards, the selection of which is one of the most important union members can make.

As for wasting money in union subs, not really, my pay and perks over the years being in jobs with proper union negotiated terms and conditions has been well in excess of what others in similar jobs but lacking union representation would have been....

I wouldn't touch it unless it was stupidly cheap (£3k or less) and looked well repaired. You can buy a 2015 Aygo of the same spec with 11k miles from Motorpoint for £6,700.

I often keep the nav on (muted) even when I know where I’m going. More than once the ‘forward information’ regarding traffic or other problems has saved me hours of sitting in queues. Fortunately the Saabs system is quite good in this respect as it warns of problems ahead even when no route is programmed. ...

Metropolis.

I understand this topic has two schools of thought, so i'm interested to hear your views. Applies to traditional autos.

When you have to stop for a couple of minutes at a junction, general traffic etc, do you put your car into N or just leave it in D and hold the brake?... Read more

Metropolis.

Thanks again for responses. In light of what has been said with regards to levels of wear and tear i'll be leaving it in D for now.

What has your rant got to do with a 21w indicator bulb?

If you bothered to read my posts in full, I pointed out you can get a genuine Osram bulb for 60p, (even less for a Neolux, which is Osram in value packing) so why pay £6?...

Hi, I was recently a passenger in a friends car when we had an accident.

I think we were at fault because it was us who pulled out across a main road that was seemingly clear, but suddenly wasnt! (slight bend, brow of hill and oncoming vehicle going v fast, all added to the situation)... Read more

Do you know if the 3rd party (the other car in the accident) are claiming any personal injury ? If so, then the addition of claim, probably won't affect her insurance so much.

Regardless, I would register a claim against her insurance company. If you have legal cover on your household or car policy they may be able to help you do that. Your friend has a responsibility to you to aid your recovery, but don't make it personal....

i have never seen a detector van. Do they exist? Has anybody or their friends had a "knock at the door".

Now that viewers of BBC Iplayer on tablets and phones have to pay--I guess there must be rich pickings for inspectors should they care to hover around university campus territory or dare I say it-care homes where older people have their own rooms( and have to have a licence!) Read more

Seriously. I did see a Chicken OXO detector van. They were used alongside an OXO advert on TV. It was a few years ago.

GB, I know you're not a lover of rusty underparts on cars. I happened to be browsing a particular thread on SubaruForester.org and couldn't help noticing how clean the guy's car was underneath. Click on thumbnail photos. OK it was only six years old compared to my eleven year old, but he did comment further down the thread that the roads aren't salted in Northern inland Sweden.

Had similar problem with the tail pipe on the Outback, our model has the single tail pipe silencer which should have a by pass built in (Landcruiser has similar set up on the centre box which is around £600 OE)) which opens up at higher pressures allowing an easier flow.

Scooby OE part getting on for the price as we paid for the car, aftermarket only 2.0 and 2.5 available which don't have the by pass so a custom made cat back stainless system is now on the car @ less than £300 fitted, no contest....

If only all hire companies were as honourable as Autoreisen who operate exclusively in the Canaries. Top rated company in Holiday Which and no cancelation charges, no hassle or intrusive checking when you collect or return. No need to take out extra insurance. Brilliant except for the French cars which make up most of their fleet. Otherwise I too use Economy Car Hire and pay the additional insurance. Great service and no 1 broker in Which. Incidentally Europcar get the best car rental firm awards but can work out the most expensive. One company I would definitely avoid is Goldcars !
