Still looking for a sub-£3k auto (manual not an option) I have come across an 07 Vectra diesel (1.9). It has covered 80k and is priced at just under £3k. Is this a good buy and are there any points I should look for. TBH I am not a great diesel fan but then cannot afford to be over choosy. Any car I buy needs to take four adults in reasnoble comfort - other than that reliabilty is my main concern. Read more

Avoid diesels when shopping on a budget. Simplicity is best and petrol engines have far less to go wrong. There are plenty of smaller Astra and Focus autos around which are originally sold to the motability fleet. They're simple and robust and best in mid spec 1600 petrol form. Forget the 1.9 diesel Vectra or Astra which uses a Fiat unit with many known weaknesses which will cost you dearly at this stage in its life. Look for full history and longterm previous ownership. Many of these models are owned by elderly people and maintained to a high standard. But autos aside from prestige models are much harder work to sell on again, especially in the lower price range where people are looking for economy and many are younger drivers with no desire for a self shifter so buy with the view that you plan on keeping it.

Hi chaps, taking delivery of our new C3 in a few weeks and starting to get bits to protect the interior surfaces from our dog so any advice/recommendations welcome. I'd like to try and find a boot liner that will cover the total floor (when back seats are folded) but still work when they're in their corect position. Rear seat covers might be good, maybe some floor mats. Any other advice for a new owner very welcome. Many thanks Roger Read more

!5th of June our car was hit by a van. Liability was admitted by the driver and agreed with the insurance companies. They for some reason gave me an S class at £300 and more A DAY! I reckon that has come to over £10k and £5K to fix ours and its worth at most £7,500. (Volvo V70 2008) Read more

DiL's car was damaged in childs nursery car park, third party insurer were on the phone in minutes, could not be more helpful, CRV equivalent delivered pronto, their car collected, fixed and swapped back about 5 days later, thats how it should be done.

In the area where I live getting a taxi without pre-booking a while beforehand was a real issue 25 years ago. Fortunately the situation atarted to improve as the council granted more licences. However it now seems to have gone the other way with licences being granted too easily. In fact there seem more drivers than the work available. The fact that some new drivers seem to have little local knowledge is not to bad in these days of sat navs. However what does concern me is increasingly poor driving standards shown by many drivers. Speeding, tailgating, agression, pulling out of junctions when it is unsafe to do so, etc. seem all to common. I thought it might be limited to my area but when I visited Folkstone recentkly I saw three examples of dangerous/inconsiderate driving by taxi/mini cab drivers in just over an hour. Is it not time councils considered tightening up - maybe asking potential drivers to pass the IAM test? Read more

IMHO mini cab drivers are the worst drivers on the road especially south east London where I'm certain you don't even need to hold a valid driving licence to become a mini cab driver considering the appalling standard of driving.

Maybe its just around here in the North East, but all of the recent roadworks that boasted of improved traffic flow etc have all proved to create the opposite.

After 2 years of miserable roadworks on the Western Bypass, the traffic is now back to what it was before they all started, so £80 million or so down the drain.... Read more
