2013 1.6 Qashqai manual box 31K miles whines excessivley at 2,000 rpm under acceleration in 2nd and 3rd. Two other similar Qashquis are the same to a lesser extent. Car is new to me so don't know what it was like previously - surely gearbox can't be failing at 31K miles? Anyone else experienced this?
My pet theory is that because the car is underpowered the box has been thrashed and the cogs worn or damaged (it isn't he mainshaft bearings cos its only in those gears).... Read more

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that the flexi pipes were changed? DO they look new with nice shiney metal connections at each end?
If so many parts have been changed i have 3 suggestions:...

I would be tempted by a Yaris, as our 12 year old Corolla is used and abused but goes on and on. As Cyd said, get quotes, as the Corolla was very cheap to insure a new driver and is tough as old boots. However, we also have a 07 Panda, owned for 7 years and has been excellent, no issues-- but it is more lightly built Fabulous engine.
Personally I would avoid an older VWPolo/Fabia, as every one I know of has electrical problems, window winder problems, general gremlins etc. The 1.2 engine is good to drive though but apparently has a number of weak spots as it ages....
After 10,000 miles and 1 year from brand new my rear tyres are wearing much more heavily than the front tyres and the LHR is nearly down to the limit indicator. Had an independant 4 wheel laser wheel alignment check done and it showed the rear wheels out of spec.
Both the main dealer and Suzuki Technical UK insist that there is no problem and the tyres should be interchanged every 6000 miles. This sounds like a fob off to me and is covering up a known problem. Has anyone else seen this problem? Read more
I have an 8 month old SX4 S Cross Allgrip CVT which has covered 6000 miles from new. It has just had the airbag recall completed which included a free levels and tyre check. The report shows all four wheels still have 6mm of tread with even wear all round. Whilst there may be some difference in the setup for the Allgrip model there is clearly something wrong given the odd wear you have.
Hi recently I bought a 1.6l vetec 04 civic privately with 90k miles on it.The condition was very good and had fsh,but unfortunately several weeks later of light use it sprung a major oil leak on the engine. It completely covered the back of the engine head to tail, that was how bad it was.The oil level was spot on when I bought it and had recently been changed.I took it to 3 garages for an estimate, and they all said it was leaking from the cam cover gasket and the front main crankshaft seal, also that the oil had contaminated the timing belt so that would need replacing aswell.Garage number 2 was pretty blunt, and said it looks like high oil pressure and that if they replaced the seals it would just start leaking again.I ended up taken it to garage number 3 and they done the cam cover gasket, front main crankshaft seal and replaced the timing belt for around £400.I thought that was that and that it was just one of those things.Just 2 weeks later it started leaking again from behind the crankshaft pulley under the timing belt cover, but only very very slighly.I took it back to garage 2, hoping that it was their mistake, but they said that it is now most likely leaking from the front camshaft oil seal.Garage 2 said there was no visible oil leak from that seal when then had the timing belt cover off before and that there would be a charge to replace this seal.Garage 2 said it is unlikely to be due to high oil pressure and that to replace the front camshaft oil seal would be an involved because the engine mount is in the way.
So now I am at a crossroads of what to do.Do I get the front camshaft oil seal done and hope that the rear engine oil seals aint the next to go or just sell it asap before it turns into an even bigger money pit?
Thanks Read more
Just assuming that the garage already checked the oil pressure either way they did not say anything about it.Is it safe to assume that it was high oil pressure that popped the front oils seals? Also is it safe to assume that the damage to the rear oil seals have already been done and even if the oil pressure issue is resolved they will probably start weeping or worse if they are not already?
My car was sold to me (not from a Ford dealer) with a "Full dealership history" and indeed the service book is fully stamped up to 38k. At 37.5k the Powershift fluid should have been changed but the Ford garage who did the service have confirmed in writing that they actaully did a 50k service at which the fluid change is not done. If i hadn't enquired I wouldn't have got the fluid changed for another 38k miles which wouldn't be good for the health of the box.
Have I any comeback against the Ford garage who did the service for not writing in the service book that the fluid hadn't been changed as is required by the official Ford service schedule or should I just suck it up and pay for the fluid change myself? Read more
The term full dealer history sounds good, but unless you see specific receipted or service dept print out evidence of the expensive things like cambelt and tranmission fluid changes, or know the previous owner, its probably best to assume such things haven't been done.
Ironically things may might have gone the other way on in depth servicing like correct brake servicing and such fluid changes for some of us used buyers, where a car that has been regularly serviced at a (marque/country specialist indy) might have a more checkable and worthwhile history than some main dealers, some of us have more faith in such indies than we do some dealerships.
Fitted a new front bumper, the bottom skirt caught when reversing down ramps. The bumper foam type material also known as Styrofoam, has torn apart on one side. What is a suitable material, (preferably in a spray can), to use for polyurethane foam? Read more
Oh! It sticks all right! Got it on my shirt and jeans last time I used it. Won't come off.
When it first came onto the market many years ago, you had to buy a pack of two chemicals which you mixed together. It was sold by those specialist glass fiber shops like Strand Glass which were around in those days, and it was quite expensive. Now all builders' merchants sell it in shake-and-spray cans and it's quite cheap. Wilko sell Pollycell 'Expanding foam Polyfilla' for just under seven quid. But if you only use a bit of it, it solidifies in the nozzle and won't ever work again. Yes, squirt a bit in - but watch out as to how much it expands! You'll probably need just a little sqirt (like me). Wear gloves. If you get a bit on your hands, it's a job to get it off....
I just bought a Honda CR-V 2014. There is a owners manual but there is no service book, the dealer i bought from advised that its on line now. err thats a new one on me. If anyone has a CR-V can you advise if they got a service book, otherwise how do you check the service history?
Any advise on this is appreciated.... Read more
Yes, thanks. I contacted the original selling dealer who had a record of the 1 year service they did, and they were willing to sell me a replacement service book with the service stamp. So, I'll wait to get that from the dealer.
Buying a new Rover and selling our Nissan micra (2003 1.2l, 48,000miles). The Micra has power steering problems, making it stiff to drive, but does still work.. however, we know this is a big repairation job, and lowers the cars value quite a bit.. well maintained and very clean inside,, some exterior bumps and scarpes, but been dealt with professionally, no significant damage to bodywork. The dealer has offered only £100 part exchange for the micra.. looking at ads for 2003 micras, its apparent they are woth in the reigon of £1000 when in good working order... is the dealer giving us a bad deal??? should we sell the micra ourselves online from birmingham? £100 seems like the dealer is taking advantage to make a quick buck?... how much do you think the micra is worth? approx. many trhanks, nissan nadine Read more
Selling it as-is, you'll get more on the Facebook car sales pages.
Personally I'd get some prices of repair costs and then weigh that up against how much good Micra's are fetching.

Yes thx for this. Have done that and the result is very little difference. But ths for advice anyway.
