Yesterday, I followed a Passat W8 for a couple of miles on the motorway, which has to be one of the very rarest variants of an otherwise mass-market car.
Have any other Backroomers spotted any vanishingly rare or quirky models recently? Read more

I tend to agree with the above.
If it has oil changes at the right time with the right oil and not been abused a modern engine should last for well over a hundred thousand or even two . Short runs with a cold engine are not good.
I would like to bring to your attention that you can now prepare for the theory test completely free (using the official DVSA material).

Sorry, yes. DVLA/ VOSA/DVSA, DSA- I tend to view them all as the same body, really.
I can only think that they are going to use the registered user list for some marketing purposes. However, the point is that the website does not comply with UK law....
Please can you people help me out. After I bought a new Toyota Etios 2014, about 6 months, it started jerking (going faster and slower) without me using the accelerator. Then all of a sudden it started revving up. I can drive about 1km after starting the car, trying to stop at a stop st or robot and it will rev up to about 2000 - 3000, and this is when I have my foot on the brake. Even if i drive downhill, freeing, not using the accelerator, it revs up to about 1500. I took it for all services, complaining about the problem, but was told I can't drive and that it's normal. I then wrote to Toyota SA, who asked whether I have a problem to start the car, which is no and their conclusion was that it is the battery. I tend to differ and please help me out on your opinion. My opinion is as follows:... Read more

I've been very happy with the Goodyear Efficient Grip - quiet, sure footed, and seem to wear OK
I'd agree and add that they are great in the wet.
On vacation in 2012 i was apparently photo radar clocked at 39 in a 30 zone. About a month later back in Canada i recieved byregular mail the NIP asking who was driving the car. I decided to ignore it as IMO no proof of delivery and it was well past the 14 days. it was a rental car.
I may be coming back to the UK later this year and will be hiring a car. I am wondering if there will be any repurcussions of my ignoring the NIP. like will my drivers licence be flagged at rental companies or will there be any chance that a warrant issued in my name if it shows up on a passport?... Cept coming from a wierd accident-averse country family, with, as far as I am still aware, ZERO accidents among my "firece fast" driver of a Mother, (like 80 to 90 in a 2.0l Vauxhall in the late 1960's, on good "A" roads)much travelled father and his brother too, over 60 + years.
I even drove like this when young, though albeit, faster, and less smoothly, but I still understood the concept....

Sounds like you have a deal sorted there, I can only presume at £120/month your deposit is reasonably substantial (I'll take a stab at around £6k if not more).
One of the key differences between an PCP and Contract Hire is that the initial amount you pay can be very different, the example I was using was probably a 1/10 of what your deposit is....

Looking at your post, you may want to consider leasing a new car. You will be covered under a warranty for the period of time you have it and the amount you spend over the term is usually less than the depreciation and repair expenses of a used vehicle (depending on age and cost of course). So if you are looking at a car for around £12,000 that could end up needing another £2,000+ of work done to it over its life with you (assuming the auto box doesnt go bank costing you well over £4k), plus depreciation over that time you could end up spending £6K+ on the vehicle as a minimum which broken down over 3 years could mean you have a reasonable amount to spend on leasing a new hassle free car plus you get to keep the £12k in the bank.
